I think the number one tip for learning to skate is to skate everywhere, all the time. Just feeling comfortable and in control will help a TON with your skating overall.

Definitely. I recently started skating again after about 2 decades of not skating. What I remember when I first started skating as a kid was I just rolled around on the board doing tic tacs and carving. As a teen I was skating as a means for transportation, but once I was comfortable on the board I started going to skate spots with friends and trying tricks. I used to do slappies, manuals, front side 180s, nose stalls, reverts, power slides, acid drops, transitions... Now, I'm just more or less starting back up, riding around as much as possible while trying some tricks here and there so I can gain my confidence. My muscle memory is there, but my confidence is lacking. My ollie is ok, but lacking that pop.

Super stoked to see you still skating. with improving your ollies, try to push your front foot more forward towards the nose in the air instead of down towards the ground and try not to panic and rush it. Have fun though theyre already looking great

Getting higher and consistent ollies takes a good while, all advice I'd give is try playing with the foot position; back foot foot a bit more on the tail and focus on getting a strong pop and the front foot to get as much contact with the board as possible as that's the foot giving it lift and also when you get higher makes sure it levels it out so you can land on it safely. It's pretty damn good progress so far. Hopefully this makes sense, it's how I thought of the process for myself.
@48peon
@48peon 8 месяцев назад
You got it. After you pop the tail with your feet via your ankle, bring your rear leg up, almost as if you are bringing your knee to your chest. The bottom of your rear feet seems to be capping how high your Ollie gets. Then again, you look great going thru the progression.

I'm 50 as well, I just put new wheels and bearings on my old decks. Haha! One I converted into a cruiser board I got from 1985 (Sims, remember that company?) w/ soft spitfire wheels and indies. My other board is my Salman Agah popsicle deck w/ old mid '90s era Thunder trucks and new Dragon wheels. It still has all the marks from when I used to do tricks to remind that I still have it in me somewhere. Haha! happy skating!!

One thing I noticed is, you are "kicking" with your front foot. Move your front foot to be on the middle of the skate, with your heels out of the board. When you push the ground with your back foot, your front food will "slide" on the board instead of kicking the board into compliance. The full motion is: you will jump using your back foot and your front foot will naturally move up (try at home without the board, kids). When your back foot is actually leaving the ground (at this point the front of the board will be 30-45 degrees up in the air) your front foot will then slide forward to reach at little further than the front screws (remember, your foot was in the middle of the board before). By "reaching" the front screws, your board will "naturally" straighten up(ish) in the air. If you've done everything successfully, your front foot will be in the general area of the front screws when you land. There is a "ollie super slow motion" video that shows this movement in detail. The main thing about learning any new tricks, either on rolling kind of skates or the boarding kind of skates, is realising what you are doing wrong, breaking into A, B, C, D and fixing one at the time. "Seeing the footage I can see my front foot is on the wrong position (A), I am leaning back too much (B) and my back foot is actually leaving the board before the board even touches the ground (C)." You should try and fix A and maybe B, but fixing A, B, C and D all at once will not help you understand which one is affecting you the most. I am a rollerblader (never been on rollerskates) and I plan to learn Skateboard next week. I used to skateboard A LOT when I was a kid, 12-14 y.o., and used to do a lot of tricks. It's been 10 years now so I remember the theory, based on my own struggles, but I've had no practice. That's why next week I am buying a new skateboard and seeing how short is my muscle memory. I used to look up to Rodney Mullen and try to do the "easiest" tricks like the casper, heli pop or darkslide. Now I will praise the Dogs if I can do an ollie without embarrassing myself. That's how I found you by the way, and now I am a fan. Keep on practicing. Your attitude is kick ass!

In the comments are allot of great advice already. The thing I want to add is, that every skatetrick needs muscle memory. To get this muscle memory, your muscles have to develop first. You will get stronger pop and technique over time, if you just keep practicing. Look at it like weightlifting. At the start you can only lift small weights, but if you train long enough, you will lift heavier and heavier weights. Its the same with getting better and higher ollies.

Front leg middle, pop the tail tip/edge with the ball under your big toe. The closer your feet are at the starting position, the higher you can jump. You need to let the board slide against the side of your shoe, your current foot position is possible and looks ultra clean if you can pull it off but your ollie game isn’t strong enough to pop the board high enough to do it without the slide.

maybe try start jumping just before popping the board and play around with the timing of it a bit. this will stop your back foot pinning the tail to the ground and taking away some of the height of your ollie ❤❤ idk that’s just something that helped me with the timing n stuff also imagine you’re trying to float with the board. this will help you stay in the air longer as you won’t be focusing on quickly pushing the board down and landing on it. keep up the amazing work we’re all cheering you on!!

I had been skating like 15 years before I was able to actually articulate that you need to jump up before you pop down to get more height. Otherwise you're really just fighting you're own body weight. There's a youtuber on here called "why the trick" that does physics simulations of tricks (and has a great one on pop) and where your body weight is that I personally find super helpful. At least let me describe it all so I could start to reason about what I was doing wrong personally.

I used to ollie like that until i get that i was not really jumping and just bending my knees and getting back to them straight, it will just hurt your knees. Try to keep up in the air without trying to get back to the ground as fast as possible. It will help, but takes time to get that in your mind. Keep up the good work !

It’s definitely bringing up the back foot, try to tuck your legs into your chest after you pop, but like really focus on bring it up as your sliding, also I find moving Ollie’s easier cause you can jump forward to get that height. Also keep your shoulders parallel to the board and you’ll land more straight.
@kalelmosaiah
@kalelmosaiah 6 месяцев назад
Hai Helga!! Kinda late and might get buried in this section but I think you don’t have to bend your legs the low before jumping (squatting your legs to a 90° should be enough) It’ll make you use more energy unnecessarily and force your back foot to stay to the ground for longer than it has to be which means the deck won’t go as high when you jump. Good luck!!!1!1!1!1!1!!!

Not sure if this comment will reach you.. THE TIMING, You can do everything right, but if you dont time each movement correctly, you won't reach the maximum height. Poor timing of when to slide your foot up the board, can cause a rocket ollie, for instance. Improper timing of when to POP the board, will hinder the height of the ollie. Try to keep in mind, before you pop your board, you FIRST want your momentum from your jump to be carrying you upwards. If you try to initate the POP while your squating down, or at the very bottom of the squat, your pop won't be as effective. Besides, the jump is the basis of an ollie, you have to initiate that first. And while we are on the topic of POP, ensure that when you pop your board, you're using your ankle too (don't be flat footed). Push the balls of your feet down to the ground, the ankle movement should be reminicent of trying to quickly go on your tippy toes. Rememer, you should only be initiating the ollie once your jumping momentum is already beginning to carry you upwards, therfore, the back of your board should not be getting shoved down to the ground (POP) by the weight of your body, your ankle should be doing the work for you :) Something i'm also noticing, is that you're bending down too far down for the jump. You actually don't jump as high once you bend down too far. This advice is based on basketball dunkn tutorials, of which I apply to basketball, skateboarding, and the epidomy of the male ego; having the ability to jump up and touch a hanging object. Jokes aside, You will use less energy if you don't bend down too far, and the jumping portion of your ollie will feel more natural. You seem to understand the other fundementals of the ollie, just take everything slow and try to apply all these movements. There's only one way to ollie, if something isn't working, it's always because your doing something wrong (talking from personal experience). Having the ability to break down tricks to individual movements, and figure out which portion is the portion that's failing, is quite helpful. Hope this helps, and sorry if its long-winded, I do enjoy mansplanning.

You've got it, one thing it think I causing you a problem, is your grip is looking pretty worn. New grip will help you ollie higher, if you can afford it though I'd be thinking about replacing that deck, it looks like it's probably lost a lot of pop. Just make sure you get roughly the same size deck and you'll be fine £25-30 is enough for something perfectly good, any more and you're only really paying for the graphic.

Also something I found useful. You should jump before you even press the back foot down. I mean like jump as a priority and as your body is already moving upwards extend your foot to pop the tail. If you are still full body weight on tail when you pop it you won’t get as much pop. Long ass paragraph I hope it helps lol

You need to open your leading hip as/after you pop the board to allow you to more easily slide your front foot forward with knee and ankle action. The hip opening will point your front knee a little more forward. If you watch slow motion videos of pro skaters, you'll see their front knee actually goes out in front of the board during the pop. As you slide your front foot forward, it transfers the front of the board's momentum upward into forward motion (which then causes the tail to come up). The board will actually begin to move forward faster than the rider until the back foot catches the tail of the board and slows it down. Watch how the board moves in relation to the skater in this slow motion video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-339k4XEvbxY.html In some of those they are doing a "boned ollie" which is where they kind of do like a ninja kick forward and makes it so they catch the tail of the board really late while the nose is already pointing downward, but you can catch the tail with your back foot as the board comes up to it (without swinging your back leg forward) for a normal ollie.

Noice! 🤌🤌🔥🔥 I'm about a year into my skating journey, so totally feel you on the ollie journey, you're doing great! So much good advice already, but i got some from a rando in the skatepark once about my arms. Try and keep your shoulders and arms doing the same thing together as that stops you either leaning too far into the nose or into the tail and keeps you jumping straight up. You're not turning though which is great! Im sure there are some videos on it, but when you bend down, cross your hands infront of your knees (like that weird knee hand dance thing lol), then when you jump up, bring your elbows up keeping a straight line across your shoulders. I really hope that makes sense, but a video would be beneficial 😅 subbed and really looking forward to the shuvit edit! Keep skating! 🛹

The second thing is you could practice what my buddies used to call hang time, where instead of trying to do the whole Ollie as one fast movement you’d pop up and then hold your legs up near your body for as long as you can before landing. You kind of land a bit crouched but you stay in the air a bit longer! You’re doing great though, you’ve inspired me to get myself a board and get back out!
