In this video I give detailed information about foundation papers & templates. This is a beginner paper piecing tutorial geared towards those of you new to Quiltworx / Judy Niemeyer patterns and want to learn all about what the difference is between foundations papers, template layout sheets, t-templates and how to cut them out for your project.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've done a lot of regular quilting but this is my first Quiltworx pattern. So much new terminology and techniques specific to this brand had me confused! I'm in the midst of cutting my NP (newsprint!) sheets and your video answered my questions, I'll be sure to look for more of your videos if I get stumped :)

My son picked out the “Summer Solstice” pattern that he wants me to make for him. I’m an “old school” quilter and even won a few ribbons from our county fair. But I’m confident your tutorials will get me through this new technique. I bookmarked them all!

Brilliant job of explaining what is otherwise a confusing pattern. This is what you need to know prior to cutting fabric. do you have another video on actual piecing?

Sorry, I don’t have any experience with that particular pattern. If you are on Facebook, you can try posting a question in the Quiltworx group. Lots of instructors and quilters are on that and can help answer questions or help solve problems. Good luck!

Thanks for this very helpful video, Jenny. I just started preparing my fourth Quiltworx pattern (Dinner Plate Dahlia, King) and was still confused by all of the similar terminology concerning papers and templates. Your explanation was the best I've heard and cleared up all the confusion. There are also a lot of other little helpful tips and tricks in it that I hadn't heard before. Learning the the Quiltworx way of paper piecing has been a brain buster, but a lot of fun. After you've made a few patterns, for the most part it all starts to make sense. I have watched one or two of your other videos which were also very helpful. I just subscribed to your RU-vid channel and look forward to more of your excellent tutorials!

Well I hope the video helped a little. I do remember that it is very confusing when just beginning. Hang in there! It does get easier the more projects you work on! If you can I’d encourage you to find a class near you with a certified instructor that can help you! Good luck!

Hi Jenny, Something i would like to see you teach or show is you sewing these patterns together. Like how you stitch them together. The whole quilt, from beginning to it becoming a Quilt top, of flimsy. Please And thank you for these videos. Kim Ireland

I’m so sorry you’re having troubles. Where are you located? I would highly encourage you to find a Quiltworx class close to you or possibly take an online course with an instructor if you’d like more one on one instruction. There are several Quiltworx instructors that offer zoom classes. You can find those advertised on the Quiltworx Website and Facebook.

Hey Jenny! Loved the tutorial. On a Technique of the Month, do you recommend to cut all papers ahead of time, or just the next month?

That's a great question! It really depends on you. I personally like to get all my papers and fabrics cut and put into the bags all at once if I can (which sometimes can be overwhelming on a big quilt) ....but that way I only have to cut things ONE time and I feel organized and ready to start sewing. But if you don't have the time or the space, and if it's easier for you to just go one booklet or block...or month.. at a time to keep yourself organized, then do what works best for YOUR situation! What about the folds in the pattern pieces... should those be ironed out?

If it’s a bigger piece and the fold is really sharp I will sometimes iron it with a DRY iron (no steam!!!!) with the printed side down. But usually I don’t iron them. Once you sew on line one and give your first press after sewing… the paper will usually lay flat.

Do you press out the deep creases in the pattern?

Yes, if the creases are really bad and the papers won’t lay flat. I use a dry iron with no steam.

Not completely or the paper will shrink or curl up. Best way I’ve found is to use a warm dry iron. No Steam!! Good luck! 👍🏻

Hi Mary, thanks for watching! If they have really bad creases, I will sometimes iron them on the back side with NO steam to prevent accidental ink from the papers on the iron and the steam will make the papers curl and sometimes shrink...so stay away from the steam!. Usually once you get the first couple sections on and iron your pieces down, any small wrinkles will mostly go away. I hope that helps.

You certainly can cut out one sheet at a time. What I show is a way to cut them out quicker. But it’s your quilt and your project so you can do it however you feel comfortable.

Seems lije you would keep it as simple as possible... now were cutting 2 at a time??? Oh boy!!! I dont think this is for me
