If you are a total newbie sewer like me keep in mind a few things when making the tote shown in the video. When folding the piece of fabric make sure you are folding with the wrong side facing outwards. And it stays that way until the very end. When you go to make the 1.5 inch cuts you are cutting parallel to the fold, this was not mentioned in the video.
As soon as you said ‘just start’, I knew I found the right sewing videos for me 😍 I’ve been so anxious on where to start, you have such a nice teaching manner, thank you 💜
The best and easiest to digest video I've watched for a beginner in sewing. You manage to explain complex things in the way that they don't seem to scary to try. Thank you so much!
Thank you for making this video! Such a great guide to getting started - I just need to start! Thanks for giving me the encouragement to make my first project.
thank you so much this is amazing! i made the tote bag earlier and it turned out so cute so i will definitely be wearing it a lot, might even add some embroidery to it later!! xx
This was super helpful!! I’m trying I get into sewing after my sister left a sewing machine at home when she moved out (she was sent two accidentally when she ordered hers)
My parents just gifted me the singer 4423 and while I understand the basics of sewing, I have no idea where to start with this machine. 😅 Thank you for this video, it’s super helpful!
What a great gift!! I know it is a little overwhelming at first but I'm glad I could give some helpful advice :) Good luck to you on your sewing journey, Stephany!
there are threading videos on you tube look up by brand name and model, I would also download the manual from the website. I had this machine. I woukd strongly suggest testing it a bunch before useing nice fabric. I woukd start with muslin / or woven fabric, start with a different color of thread for the top and for bobbin so you know which area problem is coming from when you test if there is an issue.
I've just managed to get my mums first Machine working again, it's a basic machine, very strong, but is only a straight stitch machine, and I would like to try making a Poncho, but not your standard run of the mill one. This poncho is worn by a character in the Clone Wars season 7 called Bokatan Kyryze. It's quite stylish but I haven't sewn since I was in high school. Any tips or advice would be awesome.
How special to receive your mum's first machine! Your poncho sounds unique and exciting to make - I don't think I've ever made anything like this! Good luck :)
I’m not a raw beginner. But I’m making a tote and the fabric is miserable. It’s falling to pieces just with my cuts - the metallic thread is breaking off in bits and the polyester fibers are too coarse. Lesson learned, pick a fabric that’s sturdy and tightly woven, not a shiny pretty fabric with a very loose weave.
Thank you these tips were super helpful! I tried following the tutorial for the bag and it could have been a bit clearer, it was very quick and without details :/ But otherwise a great video!
I finally learned how to use my mom's machine and was ready to start sewing and was going to start here and I got to the bottom of the bag and I just can't figure it out! So glad I searched for this comment!
I want to make this bag but there is one spot in the video (at the 9:55 mark) that’s not clear. After you sew the sides what do you do with that little flap? You quickly said sew the sides but don’t show anything and I’m confused.
Sooo helpful for a beginner! Thank you so much! Now I'm looking for buy sewing machine. And I have some questions, maybe you can answer it. I’m wondering if there better to choose sewing machine were I can choose speed mode (using speed button)? Because not all sewing machines have a speed button. For example, the Janome 2212 does not have, but the Janome M30A has (I think about this model).💡🙄
Hey, that's a great question! I think that is personal preference... but being able to control speed is a great tool if you are a beginner and want to keep it slow at first. I keep my speed at the highest level now but any time I work with a beginner we take it to the lowest speed. If you have the option and access to buy the one where you can choose the speed, I'd recommend that!
Hi! I just inherited a baby lock proline sewing machine from my grandma. Do you think that will be an okay sewing machine to learn on? I didn't know if you would recommend a different one? Just curious! ☺
Hi Rebecca! I imagine it would work great, usually sewing machines stand the test of time :) I don't have experience with this exact machine but I say go for it with the machine you have!
Hey Rebecca, I'm glad you're getting into sewing :) I recommend canvas, a thicker (non-stretch) corduroy, denim, cotton, and a thicker linen would be nice. I think anything but knit, silk, chiffon, and fabric like those! Heres a more in-depth tutorial for the tote bag: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LR72gPbCuSU.html
Hi, just found this video, I got the singer 44S before I saw this video . Should I return it and try to get the 4423 ? Can you tell the differences bc they’re are several HD machines ?
Hey Alison! I can’t speak to this specifically since I don’t have these machines but I have heard great things about the 4423 which is why I included it here. I found this article that compares the two and says the main difference is speed and how fast the 4423 is for stitching. This definitely isn’t a problem when you’re starting out but I imagine you want your machine to last you a while and later down the road you may want to go faster. Here’s the article to see the comparison: houseofmeggs.com/singer-44s-vs-4423/ :)
I was wondering if you could recommend a sewing machine. I’m not a professional I just need to be able to hem my own pants and I need a and overlay function . Maybe you can reccomend ?
The singer 4423 is awful, frame inside is plastic, and mine is broken, reviews from a bunch of places basically said its not worth repairing. That machine has awful reviews. I wish I did not buy it as soon as it came out.
I tried to pare down my list, but I can see how this can still seem like a long list! I always recommend asking friends and family if they have any tools to help you get started and always look secondhand and use what you have to begin.
I think the list is actually pretty simple and manageable. Very basic sewing supplies plus a straight edge and rotary cutter which are both optional- they’d just make the project easier. A good pair of scissors might set you back $20-30 dollars but like she said in the video, it’s an investment as they’ll last you years. Aside from that nothing here is expensive except for the iron if you don’t already have one
Too much endless talk about machines and scissors etc. Then the actual project not made clear at all. says make a cross on the strap but no instruction how to do that, and other bits not clear. useless to a beginner.
