I have been a paper crafter for YEARS and wish someone had told me at least a few of these things when I started. It would have kept me from buying those things that I thought I "needed" and then rarely used. And those single sheets of pretty paper. I finally learned that "kits" is the way to go. Everything is coordinated. No trying to figure what paper goes with what paper. This may seem overwhelming to a new crafter but watch and re-watch this video. Purchase what you can when you can.

It’s fascinating how we’re all paper crafters and are so different from each other. Kits were the biggest money wasters for me, though I’m happy the massive amounts of supplies from kits and other supplies I didn’t use were donated to a non-profit thrift shop and the money went to a cause I care about! Deciding on colors, cardstock, stamps and dies is a big chunk of what I love about paper crafting, especially color. If someone else has already done that, I lose interest.

Most definitely would like an advanced! Personally, I think it's important to talk about solid-core cardstock as soon as possible. I regret the bargain paper packs that I am not using as a beginner card maker. That white edge just takes away from all of the hard work and effort, to me!

Since I've been only making cards for 7 years, I would like to hear about the advanced card making. Hearing your mistakes reminded me of some I made when I started out. More importantly, I would love to know more about how you use electronic cutting machines in card making, particularly, the Brother Scan n cut. Knowing how to cut images from patterned paper, etc would be so helpful.

The misti is a great choice for beginners. If they have issues stamping they will be disappointed. It’s hard to be disappointed when stamping looks good.

Maymay...I am in so deep: head first! I am putting shelves up to hold all the stuff I have. Fortunate that I truly enjoy just being able to relax and make pretty things. Some days, I just make card fronts, some days - I just cut card bases. I love embossing folders and die cutting. I have a Gemini and a Cricut and use them both! Tons of stamps from everywhere, but definitely lots of yours. Crafting and card making is such an adventure. Do I regret diving in like I did; absolutely not! But I love learning all the things that you teach, especially about the basics. Thank you!

Maymay, I would recommend adding a basic hole punch to your beginner's list - easy to get and not very expensive. And while I have (and love) all the tools you recommend, I think the we r memory keepers the works tool should be a runner up alternate since it gives nearly all the tools plus a few in one package for about the same total investment, especially when you're working in limited space or your craft "space" moves to wherever you can find room! I have ended up with multiple trimmers and basic tools for my 4 daughters' and 3 nieces' weddings, school, and teacher projects!

I totally agree - invest in a MISTI stamp positioner. I tried stamping long ago, but gave up because I got frustrated if I couldn't get a good impression, and I didn't know of a way to restamp anything with wood mounted stamps. The MISTI is a game changer.

My Sweet Maymay!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing this series. Yes I am now a seasoned papercrafter but way back when, I would have given anything to have had this series. I agree with the others that say YES to an advanced series as well. I spent 100's of dollars on sub-standard products just like you did. Once I realized that it was better to have one really good item than a lot that were not any good. Everything from stamps, tools, inks, and the list could go on and on. The word is Quality over Quanity. Once I found you...my papercrafting changed forever for the good. You have been the best teacher EVER and I WILL NEVER stop watching you. Even though my path has gone in a different direction, my love for you and your family & staff will forever be one founded in love, friendship and my mentor. I love you Maymay!!!

Thank you so much for this series, I have made a total of 3 cards 2 went in the trash LOL. I learned a lot ! I bought textured cards but I did buy the good ink and some stamps. From years of quilting I have learned to buy multi purpose, so bought some clear stamps with messages for different occasions they just happen to be photo-polymer. At this point I want to focus on Birthday cards and holiday cards. I also want to thank Tamatha Luehers for replying to my call for help suggesting this beginners series.

You are so right! 💯I have been scrapbooking memories since 1994. There wasn't as much available then so I made ways to get the end result I was looking for. I think it truly brought out my creativity. As soon as it became all the rage I felt like I needed to have everything that they came out with. I bought way more than I could actually use. It's far better to research the products to determine what best fits what you are wanting to do and create.

This was all super good information. It’s so hard to think abou being a beginner when you’ve been crafting for years, but you did a great job narrowing it down. One thing you didn’t touch on was rubber stamps. If someone wants to start stamping and they go to a big box store for supplies, rubber stamps are still readily available and aren’t too overly expensive. I think it might be helpful to address rubber stamps in a future video. Another thing that might need clarification is that if they choose a paper trimmer that also has a scoring blade, they don’t necessarily need a scoring board. I’ve been crafting for many many years and still don’t use a scoring board very often, or if I need to score, I use my paper trimmer. For whatever reason, I had a hard time with a scoring tool. I just couldn’t get the hang of it, and I’m still not comfortable with it. That said, I really enjoyed this video. I very much would love to see advanced videos, too. Thank you for taking the time to do these!

Yes on the electronic cutting machines! That would be so helpful- I’ve had a Cricut Air2 for several years. I got so fed up with Design Space ( I have a Mac) that I put that Cricut in the cupboard and left it there. I recently saw your class on Design Space, and pulled the Cricut out again. I am now trying my Cricut again hopefully with a better attitude 😅 Thank you for all your help and classes, they are wonderful.

Even though I have been crafting for years and have most of these products, I learned so much from this video and series. I can attest to following Maymay's advice- I bought most the these products and agree with her assessment. It's time for a replacement for some but overall they have lasted me for about 8 years, including the inks. I do need to buy re-inkers for my Memento and Versa Fine black ink pads and my ruler is pretty nicked up at this point but all the rest are spot on.

Hi Maymay! I am enjoying this series of videos and the information you are giving us even though I've been scrapbooking and card making for a while now. Where were you when I started? I could have used this information back then. Now, I have a room full of paper, stamps, cardstock and other items that I probably didn't need but I saw them and thought they were nice, so they came home with me. The only thing I would add to this list is VersaMark ink. Used with different color card stock it seems like you stamped with color. There is a wait for it to dry. And later you can expand to embossing.

What a wonderful video. I started making cards in about 1992 and all of the great things available now didn’t exist back then. We had wood stamps, white cardstock, and big trimmers. We had to create our own backgrounds because there were no designer papers out there. There were no stamp sets that coordinated. It’s so much easier to be successful now and create beautiful cards that your family and friends enjoy. May may, you are right on with the products you recommend. I have everything you showed, plus tons more. I use it every time.

Awesome ideas Maymay! I've been paper crafting for 30+ 😊years. Great suggestions for beginners and a great reminder to us that have been doing this for awhile, that we don't need "the kitchen sink" of things to paper craft.
