Hey mate. I never considered anything like a putty but I can think of a few projects where it would have been a lot easier than my tape and masking fluid combo. Humbrol masking fluid, if you can get it, is really good. It's tinted purple so it's easy to see not only where you've applied but also whether it's a thick enough coat.

thanks for aniother great video, i love the way you share and teach in your content. I mainly use liquid masking when I need to fill gaps but don't want to glue the piece together yet, the sculpting putty will dry to the needed part and the liquid mask acts as a barrier allowing the two pieces to be easily separated.
@evolutionxstudios
@evolutionxstudios 8 месяцев назад
thank you so much, really appreciate that! Great idea to use the liquid mask as a barrier!

Frog Yellow tape is quite good for masking. Not as sticky as cheap decorator's masking tape, and comes in bigger and wider rolls than Tamiya masking tape.

I can visibly see the struggle with your masking liquid. I have had a number of bad experiences. I'd order the Mr hobby Mr masking sol neo or buy them in my local shops and they were all terrible to work with, essentially all expired. I took a trip to Japan and picked up a bottle from Bic Camera in Akihabara and the bottle still works like new 5 years later. It may be that shipping causes temperature conditions that ruin the liquid masking. Its truly an excellent product in combination with tape

Liquid mask can also pull your paint if its to long on the surface. For a quick masking you can also use post it sheets.

I have LiquiTex masking fluid and I agree. In fact my frustration with it is why I sought out this video looking for alternatives. I never knew about special bendable tape or even putties so I learned a lot!

I can’t handle masking liquid. Mine always spills over on parts I don’t want to mask. It’s weird because some people love it and I can’t find out if they use a different technique or if I need to practice more.

I’ll sometimes use regular white glue( the stuff used in schools- non toxic and dried clear) to mask. It dries somewhat opaque which helps confirm where it is.
@evolutionxstudios
@evolutionxstudios 8 месяцев назад
And then you can rub it off when dried?
@bennettrogers7921
@bennettrogers7921 8 месяцев назад
@@evolutionxstudios you can peel it off after painting. Might want to make a light scoring at edge to break paint adhesion. Otherwise, it works fairly well

Nice tips, thanks! For liquid mask, I've found Microscale's "Micro Mask" to be pretty good. It's pretty viscous, so you don't get as much of a pooling effect. It dries fast and best of all, it dries into a plastic-like consistency which is very easy to remove. It's not elastic like other liquid masks I've used which make them harder to remove. The only drawback is that it dries pretty transparent (light blue), so it can be difficult to spot later unless you apply it fairly thick.

Good evening, great video ;), I agree 100% with you about the masking liquid, it's really too liquid except for one but which I think is expensive, it's the one from green stuff world, it is much thicker, really good and yet, I hate masking liquids, this one, I would give it a 9 out of 10

Great video, I defo need some of that 1mm tape! I tried using blutack not only to mask but to hold smaller bits onto sticks where you don't have anywhere to put clips, can use it over and over again, also hardens a bit when cold and pliable when warmed in your hands. Vallejo masking fluid is fantastic!!! It dries quick into a transparent blue and just comes away so easily, I use silicone brushes and the small metal ball clay modelling tools to push/move it about, coupled with blutack and tape I really like it.

I often mask with clear PVC tape used for bike/car paint protection. It rips easily, so when you cut with a knife you only have to score the surface instead of a full Depth cut before tearing off the unwanted portion

I use washing liquid when applying liquid mask, I can confirm it works well to keep the drying mask from collecting in the brush. Just regularly dip it in the detergent and give it a wipe on a paper towel before dipping into the liquid mask.

awesome tips! Some of these would have saved me hours on my last project! Good to know for the next one. Particularly I never knew you could bend hobby masking tape. I've always cut tiny pieces and painstakingly made the round mask with them. The putty also would have been awesome for it

Greenstuffword masking liquid is very reliable and its green so it's easy to see where it goes. What you have its not that runny and does keep its form better. I apply it with silicon sculpting tool.

Thanks for sharing, mostly using masking putty, like u i don't live in the US so silly putty is a no go for me, on some sword blades i made a mask using paper and used masking tape only on the borders of the mask to reduce the chance of it peeling the paint, had metallic paint underneath so i couldn't varnish it.
