Beginner VS Amateur VS Pro: Hill Climb Edition | Weight Handicap Rematch!

A few months ago, we pitted a beginner cyclist, an amateur cyclist, and a pro cyclist against one another up a local climb to see how much faster the pro would be. Hill climbing legend, Andrew Feather, absolutely smoked Ollie & Freddie - which came as a surprise to...nobody. We decided a rematch was in order; with a bit of a twist. We gave Ollie and Andrew weighted backpacks so all three riders weighed the same to see what difference it made!
Head to GCN+ for a gripping documentary on Andrew and the British hill climbing scene!

Yeah I rode that climb over 100km into a century in January at 101kg and it's an easy one to grind up in a big gear without any really steep sections. Reckon the Freddie could get his time down a lot by changing his gearing.

@@leighharwood9415 hard to say but the top is essentially false flat. None of it is really steep but the middle section is the only part you need to come out if the big ring and spin an easier gear. Having said that we weren't there and he may just not ride hills often and be that exhausted.

the thing is, the weight you had was evenly (or at least more so) distributed. It wasn't all in your forearms :) Just like in this video, it's way more difficult with all the extra weight in a backpack than in the legs, torso, and everywhere. Andrew would've smoked Freddy with a good distribution of the weight. Still, great job on the weight loss, and to Freddy for his massive improvement.

this is one of the most funny and interesting videos I had ever seen in the GCN videos, cause I saw the last one and I was impressed by Freddie. but now I'm blown away by his impressive improvement and performance well done. you GCN guys should get behind Freddie and use him like a lab. @marcalvarez4890
@marcalvarez4890 3 года назад
Exactly! This is among the best GCN videos because we get to see ourselves, amateurs, and we get to see the crazy fitness that is a pro rider, AND we get to see a normal person. And i have to admit the most interesting data here is how FAST a normal person improves. Especially when that normal person is a 20 something bull of a guy who is going to be crazy fast if he keeps riding. That boy is impressive! My takeaway from this video is that the rider is ALWAYS the most important part of a ride, not the bike. His or her bike handling skills, weight, aero positioning and gear, and their mental emotional energy. Its a good reminder, and its why im riding a $30 garage sale bike before buying the next generation of Canyon Lux for multiple thousands. The rider is the most important part of the system, as this video proves. Ride safe people! And ride often.

I would be more likely to sign up to one of the 4-6 week long 'train with' series that GCN produces with Freddie than with former Pros like Connor.... (Physically I have more in common with Freddie..) Would also be interested to see some sort of attempt to measure his progression over 12+ months. could be a mini series in this with a number of 'newbies'. Reckon there would be a diminishing return after initial big leaps due to improved technique, bike fit, cadence, weight loss etc then interesting to see where the next set of gains come from....

@eccehomer8182
@eccehomer8182 3 года назад
Agreed. One of the big problems with GCN (and other content creators) is that it's heavily geared to pro-cycling... I'm mean apart from Ollie, they're all ex-pro's riding £10K bikes and even Ollie is always on a superbike. It also tends to be about riding as fast as possible, which is OK, but cycling also brings many other joys... which is probably why I like the Mark Beaumont videos.

Instead of the “asthma” medicine, it might’ve been the circumstances + more motivation. Back in high school, my teacher used to force us to do the mile run once every two weeks two months leading up our state fitness test. My time was terrible, around 15 minutes the entire two months because I didn’t care. When the actual test came, from pure motivation to maintain my grade I did the mile roughly 4 or 5 minutes faster.

Nothing like getting passed by a winter hack bike with mudguards and lights while you're riding your all singing and dancing summer special.

Best thing I've seen today, very entertaining. Well done guys!! Yes, riding with a backpack is not ideal, I know as I do all my shopping and running around on a bike. Lastly, I absolutely love Andrew's shoes!! 😀👍

Oh backpacks and bike. If you do another in the future I HIGHLY suggest using the belly band. I have commuted for 5 years on my road big with a 36L bag. Having that extra point of contact for the bag around the waist really helps with the swinging and shifting across your back.

Freddie looks like he’s over spinning and the bouncing makes me wonder if he has an accurate bike fit... but kudos to him for participating and finishing the climb. 🙌🏽

I just love Freddie, he is my hero! I did the Le Col de Bannerdown a few weeks ago on my Winter bike and only did 12:39. I will switch to my climbing bike and repeat, MUST get under 11 minutes. Hats off to Andrew Feather for taking part, a real good sport. Thanks, great video!

Freddie's determination and commitment is great to watch and that sprint finish had me punching the air. One of the best and inspiring videos of seen for a while. Coincidently I had a thought yesterday about having weight categories on Stravas KOM segments. Being new to cycling I had a bit of a go at a KOM the other day and found that obviously a lot of the people up the leader ranks are weighing between 60kg and 70kg. As a 83kg rider I would like to know how I fair against other riders of a similar weight.

Bro I'm the exact same weight as Freddie WAS in the previous video, so to see him progress this much is great. I just got my first bike after 21 years of not cycling and I'm dearly looking forward to it.

That was excellent. As someone who's somewhere between a beginner and amateur and with a pretty weighty bike (plus a few extra pounds), it's nice to see the playing field levelled somewhat for once!

Chapeau Freddie, not just for the win and the PB, but also the weight loss... and catching the cycling bug! I did Bannerdown for the first time the other day... it's a really good climb. I did it in 11:57 for the Strava segment, though I was pacing myself as I'd never done it before and I had also just ridden 35 miles to get there. I would need carry around 7kg of ballast and with that I reckon I'd be struggling to break 10 minutes, though I'm pretty sure I could do that when fresh and without the ballast.
