Drinking alcohol the night before a bike ride has a serious effect on your recovery and cycling performance. Or does it? With the help of data from Whoop and Training Peaks, we do some Dan Lloyd inspired "science" to see how a hangover affects recovery, heart-rate and power output when compared with an effort when we're fresh and well rested.

Thank you 🙏🏻 it was a decision that was a long time coming for me personally, everything I do I do excessively and over the years I left no stone unturned with the party scene. I realised I was addicted when I couldn't go more than a few days without getting blind drunk, if that was any other vice (smoking, gambling, shopping) then it would be seen for what it really is, addiction, but with alcohol it's fobbed off as what we do to let of steam, this went on for me from 16 to 31, then after making a complete fool of myself one night (this was extremely common for me), I woke up full of anxiety and guilt I knew it was the last time and I decided to seek help. This lifestyle isn't for everyone and its easy to look back with Rose tinted glasses but for every good night drinking I had 3 bad ones. Just my personal experience over the years. If you're British its bloody everywhere and the drunker you are the bigger the badge of honour the next day, very few cultures accept that behaviour. Also its the only drug you will have to justify not taking 😂 that's the hard part believe me

Great clip again guys, however as a chemistry teach I really cant bite my tongue about the structure (drawing) of acetaldehyde. You did get the formula (C2H4O) right, but the structure was wrong and the C-atom had 5 bindings, which is not the way to go. So, all in all, it will result in an A, instead of the usual A+. Cheers!

The worst part of alcohol is not on your performance after drinking, but how it affects your recovery. As you said, alcohol messes up with testosterone hormone, which will lead to a worse recovery, as it will inhibit the muscle repair, and will make you prone to inflammation and joint pain after exercising (injury risk too). I still enjoy my drinking.

I haven't been drinking for 4 months now, i drank everyday (or almost) since I was 19, now im 32, my weight went down a bit, and I feel like my body is grateful for my decision... But, i miss those nights, going out 3 times per week, drive around the city with good weather (Lisbon) and going home with beautiful Erasmus girls almost everytime, there was always a smile on my face, life was good. Now, im staying home, cycling a lot more and eating chocolates and crap a lot more often than I did before, and no fun nights with the girls... Heinz Stucke once said, life is good when there's booze, girls and a road to travel. (He traveled the world on bicycle for decades) Best regards for you all!

Quite interesting. It would also be interesting to see how much prolonged alcohol consumption has on performance. Drinking alcohol in moderation consistently for a month and see how you progress or even regress vs a month with no alcohol. I would like to see the same experiment done with sleep deprivation. Both a short term experiment and a long term one. Create a baseline month with a consistent 8 hour sleep and log performance. Then the next month shorten the sleep to a consistent 5 hours and see how it affects performance.

I raced in college so I have a great deal of data on this subject. Frankly I’m surprised at how well these lads did. I think if they did a second effort for the control and experimental runs we would see more radical results. Worth noting that multiple hard efforts is more representative of a hard training ride/group ride/race than a single all out effort.

Nice and entertaining look at this guys! Thanks for not bashing alcohol completely! It gets blamed so much for the stresses of modern life And whilst it can be very destructive for some, socially it’s pretty constructive. Common sense says if you do accidentally have a skinful the night before, why purposefully stress you body the next morning! Drink moderately and better quality and take regular nights off and you probably won’t notice a difference unless you’re elite+

It would be interesting to see what the riders' performance on the 2-day session would be like without alcohol. Perhaps the poorer performance is due to the previous day's efforts with or without alcohol. Also, what happens if subsequent effort follows 2 days hence or 5 days hence.

I work for a brewery doing quality assurance so avoiding alcohol is, well, impossible. I have at least one beer a day and often wonder how much of an impact this has on my cycling. One cool tidbit I have is that acetaldehyde is a common byproduct of fermentation by yeast and often adds a green apple or acrylic paint smell to beer.

That's merely on a 7 minute route. The effects over the course of a typical 40 to 60 mile ride would probably be noticeably worse. That stated, there are some strong weekend warriors around here who drink beer (to excess) the nights before rides. I'm convinced that cheap beer helps them carb-load in some way. Of all the riders I've ridden with who regularly drink, it's the beer drinkers who do the best. The wine drinkers are inevitably slower.

Not everyone drinks until they are hammered like the study participants. I would suspect that you would have gotten similar results if you had a cold or were otherwise under the weather. For folks who like the after ride beer or consume 1-2 drinks per day, the question remains, what is the effect of this pattern? I think that would cover most people who have a job but take their training seriously and would want to know whether to cut out the booze or reduce to say the night before a recovery day. I have experimented with these questions (one a day, two a day, at the end of a training week) and the only way to reduce the effect (energy level, sleep, HR) was to remove the cause (e.g., booze). The highly individualized rule would apply here, you need a more measured approach. Sleep is the most important part of recovery, so if that is affected, then you have your answer. I really appreciated the comments on cell volume and impact on ATP production. There was no mention of weight gain. Probably not a short term concern for the participants, but over time?

Until I noticed my belly and weight went wrong, and the staff doing abdominal ultrasound every year gave me a parents talk, I finally had an awakening and resorted to clean diet, calorie count and abstaining from alcohol altogether. And most importantly, I've picked up better lifestyle by actively working-out on resistance training, running and, yes, cycling for 2 years. The result? It's absolutely rewarding. Good topic and well played. Love the use of vine, beer and hard liquor. I found drinking wine these days also gives me headaches, which I am attributing to use of sulphates by wine growers. Beer has to be drunk in volumes, thus frequent visits to the toilet, and drinking a cognac is probably the best for me. But definitely all three affect the athletic performance. Loved all the lines and cuts, camaraderie between the presenters in this video, would love to party with them and even bringing Dan into the mix of things was well timed/shown. Can't wait for another video, thanks!

In Sri Lanka we are facing a fuel crisis so the public transport is very limited. My friends called me for an evening drink and i couldn’t say no. I cycled about 40kms in the hot sun and i had to cycle back in the dark (got power cuts in the night due to the economic crisis) without any street lights. I rode faster on the way back even being super drunk. Speed comes to humans when we are drunk even if we are cycling or driving a car.

Great vlog. Would it be possible to re-do the experiment again with all of you drinking the same tipple. The beverages of choice have different abv’s and thus the variations of results are quite significant.
@CarlosSilva-ti5ib
@CarlosSilva-ti5ib Год назад
It would not improve much the result, because the response of the human body, to the same tipple, can be different. To perform a really cientific experiment GCN would have to use much more cyclists and experiments. I think that's not their objective. The main idea is clear, drinking and cycling is not a good choice.

I don't drink, but edible cbd is great for stamina. You don't feel anything below the neck with 5 mg. I never shift gears once on a ride.

I'll tell you drinking a Desperado after a 5 hour ride was amazing. Having said that, at Bath university there was a bicycle pub crawl, and some people could barely get on the bike after that.

Great episode. Love the show. Do it again! This time make sure to use all of the GXN presenter teams. Let them have equal amount of alcohol intoxication (1,5 promille) register blodtype, metabolisme rate, fitness level and dietplan. Test fitness performance (FTP?) the day after and two days after the alkohol binge. Purpose to see how dietplan, metabolisme and blodtype effects the restitution over time with and equal messeaured alcohol intoxication and FTP effort. Which of the presenters biological composition is the most capable?

I have a good relationship with ETOH and you should also understand that ETOH is stored just like….fructose which I avoid. When I was semi pro, I’d drink a bottle of red wine the night prior to races. My fault was too much zone 3 & 4 training vs only 2 & 5 that I do now.

I'm legit a science teacher and this is such a good video demonstrating alcohols long term effects that I'll show it to my year tens in October when we study drugs Edit: having watched all of it I may not show the ending - telling a bunch of fifteen year olds that red wine is good for you might not be the wisest!

This is great you guys! Of course I loved Ollie's comment about the genius of legitimately drinking on the job! The results are somewhat predictable but I thought the times and energies used would have had a wider margin considering how everyone felt in the 'morning after.' Can we assume then that if you three had a very moderate ingestion of alcohol the night before like, Ollie; 1 regular sized glass of red wine, Connor; a 1/2 pint of beer and Hank; 1 shot of scotch then the results the next day would not show any change in times and energy use?

I did my toughest ride ever, 395km, 4500m altitude, with 5 Bag setup on my travelling bike, carrying tent and everything with me after a camping holiday drunk/hangover. I had to go so far in one day, because I wanted to participate in a party, and when I was very drunk, I decided to take the toughest route, but I only had 2 days time because of appointments.

Don't know if this conflicts with the "road" bikers here, but I ride mostly MTB (because we all know that's the only way to TRULY enjoy bike riding lol). I rarely take a drink anymore--rarely ever drink b00ze in the last 25 years or so (maybe a few drinks a year, so almost never). When I ride w/friends who drink either regularly or once in a while, the difference I notice seems very recognizable. The guys that drink more, and/or more often, have the same results on a sliding scale as the guys that drink less often, and that appears to be: excessively sweat more, winded more quickly, dehydrate rapidly, muscle cramps, tire and fatigue more quickly. I don't know if this is relevant to their amount of regular exercise too, but I've found it to be perfectly predictable. The guys that drink more, get ALL of these symptoms FIRST. The guys that drink less/less often, get the symptoms a few miles LATER than them, and those of us that drink rarely or never, either don't get ANY of these symptoms or on longer rides are the LAST to show any signs of excessive sweating and fatigue. btw- this is also from a wide range of ages and age groups I've noticed this, so it's NOT directly associated to age, ranging from early 20's to early 60's. ~JSV

At 9 cal per gram vs 8 for fat and 4 for carb alcohol can be a powerful performance enhancer. Say two shots of vodka and an expert rider will have more power and control shouldn't be affected. However after three hours those two shoots will come back with excessive dehydration. Indoor training with a shot or two can mean some extremely good efforts on days of low motivation. 3 hours of hard riding with the bro's and then a few beers together afterwards often inspires me to ride another two hours when otherwise I would have been done. But then it's heavy bonk time.

For the last 20 years I've had a good few beers on Saturday night plus a bottle of wime and gone out cycling Sunday morning. It makes absolutely no difference [although 2 gin tonics on top does] in fact cycling off the hangover is one of life's great pleasures

They rode together the first time, so the differences of 10-30secs could well be down to that and how they coped with faitgue from the previous day. In my personal athelete and drinking experience, it's about drinking regularly smaller amounts and enjoying it, not making it a habit. If you like a drink, train your body to take it just like you train your muscles. I read about TdF riders in pre WW2 years drinking large amounts of brandy before a 300+km stage and they still averaged over 30km/h on those bikes and dirt roads.

On the point about the gut microbiome, green and black teas also contains large amounts of a flavonoid called Flavanols (in the family like polyphenols) and doesn’t have the same level toxic effect on the body as alcohol does. Cheers!

When I cycled home from a party drunk with my friend who is significantly better at cycling than me (I'm no pro but he is 2nd in our federal state in germany) I could easily keep up with him and even large climbs felt so good with each pedal, definitely don't condone it but that is my experience with it.

For about two months during my Friday indoor rides, I've been having stomach problems. It was only this past Friday that wife was, like, "We drink on Thursdays." So... now, we've changed our schedule so we're not drinking on nights before a 3-hour training session! It only took me months to figure this out! Though, in terms of performance, I don't notice a physical decline in strength (my power is the same as days when I don't drink.) I just feel like garbage during and after the ride. But I'm not a pro-level rider. My FTP is about 215 to 220 watts right now.
