I have been drawn to witchcraft and worship of nature for many years now and have a great interest in the use of herbs for magic and medicine. However, people still refer this to evil and say that I am inviting bad spirits into my life. Please can you help me to say something to them to allay their fears or am I the one who is being naive? ❤
Ignorance can be hard to deal with. But it’s important to remember that it isn’t you holding prejudice. People are often frightened of of things they don’t understand. Asking people why they feel that way is the first step to addressing their ignorance. Then gentle education is the second step. Knowing your history helps a lot. I hope this helps

I'm going to love this series! I've been practicing witchcraft for 7 years now but 2 years ago on New Years Day I decided to start working with Poseidon and then a few months later Apollo and Gaia. I feel intuitively that I was born a witch from a lineage of witches... but something happened and I don't know what... ive half assed practiced but feel such a calling I can mo longer resist... very informative video... I think im an herbalist and very interested in the premodern craft...
I'm still learning, was baptized Catholic as a child. I'm still fairly new to all this. But yet, already, the thought of witchcraft gives me a sense of peace and comfort. 💗
I also wanted to mention I am reading an older book by a real old author who is no longer with us and hasn't been for some quiet and the Henry Lawson (A Fantasy of Man) Complete Works 1901- 1922. The more I am reading this book the more I think that it might be part witchy-fied with some of the words he used to use when writing his short stories and poems. I have even put a couple of poems I have come across into my Magical Journal to make it that extra bit magical for me. This book is over 1,000 pages so I am reading two books one I read in bed if I am not too tired and Henry I read during the day when I am not on here catching up on videos or knitting.. One day soon I am hoping to to take my knitting over to a charity store or church for the homeless but it has been a little cold for me at the moment. I take after my family who also feel the cold. Since my Grandfather is originally from England and sometimes when I talk I sound English and now when I do listen to myself it is actually true. So I guess I get that from my Grandfather. Avalon, is there a school out there that teaches advanced witchcraft? Every book and school is all the basics or its just fluffy stuff. I did find a series of books on advanced...but it was written by a Satanist. (No thanks)
Willow Green not to my knowledge. Advanced Witchcraft materials are usually very niche. By that I mean, they tend to focus on one particular subject and all modality and go in super deep.

I am part gypsy and i can remember my grandmother performing different rituals but at the time i was around 4 years old then my mom moved me away and i missed out on everything that should have been my heritage :-( I can remember my grandmother had started teaching me about herbs and i have carried that with me but as for the magical properties i have learned that on my own. I really enjoy how you explain and describe topics for deeper understanding. I just beginning to enter this area of study and am amazed at what I am learning! I live in Canada and spent the day at an Indigenous Culture Camp. We had the honour learning from Elders in various communities the teachings of their ancestors. It amazes me how similar the practices are to the teachings you offer in your own course on Tarot & Witchcraft. There is a such an element of truth and tradition in spells/prayers/ceremonies. I get different information. I also have one neighbor that lives across the street from me. She has offended and insulted my husband and I on more than one occasion. As you know I have been practicing for a couple years now and that this is my third year now. And I was wondering if you have a remedy to get dog stains out of carpets that I can make up.? Jessica Issell there is always a way. Finding that way in on the other hand can be quite tricky. Have you ever looked into the comprehensive history of Hoodoo? I highly encourage you to look into its origins and cultural influences. You may be quite surprised.

Lovely video... thanks so much for sharing this great information. My question is... self initiation is it valid in the Witchy community or not? I just recently had an argument with my best friend about this because he said that if you’re not initiated by another Witch or Priestess technically you a not officially a Witch. He said that solitary witches performed a self initiation ritual that is not valid by the witchy community. No matter how knowledgeable you are in the craft if you’re not initiated by another witch you are not a witch. I’m a solitary eclectic pagan witch, with hereditary witch influences on the Santeria practices but leaning more in the pagan practices. Thank you again!
georginaq my honest answer is that initiation is a valid and common entry point into the craft. But it is not as black and white as it seems. This idea surrounding the validity of self initiation is born out of traditions that adhere to such structures. With that said, not all Witchcraft is born out of Tradition. I will make sure to do a video on this very subject.

I'm going to thank you 4 year video I hope I can find a part 2 of it I found it extremely honest I I started a long time ago got involved with studying and that but because of my beliefs when I I got married my ex-husband why does Catholic so my beliefs did not match his I didn't give up my beliefs but when we had children I just put them on hold neither up my daughters are Catholic they grew up having more of my beliefs than his and I never really put them out there for them and I've recently have about a year ago got back into reading and just general studying and I want to go a lot further now my kids are adults matter of fact I adopted my granddaughter and she is now getting ready to turn 17 she has special needs and when I do practice I always but I always do a protection on her home and her anyway I would love to see more information about videos from you

I love your posts they’re very informational. I practice Buddhism. But for years was drawn to witchcraft. I’ve attended circles, and was led to Buddhism through the magic of crystals and intent.. My school off Buddhism is very useful however, when I’m stuck. I’ve utilized old Wiccan magic to get negative people away from me or break a cycle. Buddhism dies the same but takes longer. I love Buddhism it helps me monitor my choices and mind. However, the God and Goddess pops up and tells me reach for the stones or turn back time to banish and it works. I’m just trying to figure out where I fit Wicca in. Any suggestions?
Merging spiritual systems can take time. Pay attention to what naturally draws you to each. I’m not an authority on Wicca but I would say that your Spiritual practice is rooted in Buddhism and your practical and hands on practice May very well lay in the area of witchcraft or in your Instance, Wicca.
I may not be able to do my witchcraft every morning but I do try and light an incense every morning while I pull a tarot card and while I am doing the ironing once a week and when I get the chance I will have my ritual bath and then do another ritual in the lounge room. It is hard for me to do my practice at the moment but I do get some things done. When I can. I love your videos and to be able to learn from you and other witches is the best feeling in the world and reading books as well. I find that reading books of all kinds you can actually get really involved the story no matter what book it is that you read. And I do find it relaxing along with my my coloring in as well. Great video! I have been raised very Christian, and I have never felt happy or comfortable as a Christian. I don't even consider myself one. I have wanted to learn witchcraft for two years now, and have felt an urge and feeling to learn it, but I simply don't know where to start. I cannot let my family know that I want to become a witch Or let them see anything related to it, they will not like it. I do have a friend who is learning soon, though. Have any suggestions?
I love that you talk abouth less well known practice of witchcraft. For me as one "member" (its my family tradition) of old witchcraft art of craftsmenship of "tools" and "amulets and protection tokens, remedities" we look to witchcraft very diferently...
I think... or the way I think about it is you can call someone an artist... or you can break it down into painter, sculptor or whatever... but even saying painter there are different styles....Eventually you realize that you can break down practices further and further and come out with very unique examples. When I talk about this I personally avoid cultural specifics unless you are from that culture- instead focusing on the underling principles which are often shared amonst several traditions and agreeing with the person whom I'm speaking to find a common terminology.
Hello Avalon, I really enjoyed your video :) I have recently been reading a collection of essays and articles about the physical evidence of folk magic in early modern period Britain as, unlike "High" or Ceremonial magic, these practices seem to have been so ubiquitous among ordinary people (many of whom could not write) that there is little written record. The articles cover things like protective markings around fireplaces and doorways, "witch bottles" and the offering of other objects both upon the threshold, and in the foundations, of homes. But, in early modern Britain, such folk magical practices were intended to protect ordinary people and their homes from attack FROM the much-feared and maligned archetypal witch figure that emerges from with hunt trial papers. I was wondering what you think about this nuance? Can you see parallels in other pre- or early-modern cultures? It would be fascinating to somehow know how practitioners of folk magic viewed themselves, especially in relation to such a feared cultural figure. There is a strong history of postcolonial magic and cunning work here in southern Tasmania. There is a specific focus on apothropeic magick of the same degree in which you have described. I suppose because Tasmania was colonised by English convicts you are going to find quite a bit of a throwback to Britain. There are many other cultures whose people practised protective magic of the folk magic variety. The Irish and perhaps the most apt example of this having cultivated many magical charms and curious superstitions surrounding the wee folk or fairies. I believe the way that these practitioners are folk magic and folk magical superstitions viewed themselves, was in a very natural way. Superstition and folk magical practices have been handed down from generation to generation and just become commonplace. Even to this day I know quite a few ethnic families that practice curious charms with in the home because that’s what they were taught to do with little regards to why it is that they are taught to do it. It’s simply natural.

I'm so glad I found you. I have been on my journey a few years now gradually diving deeper and deeper down my rabbit hole in search of finding my path. A few months ago I had a personal experience and after alot of research and some deeper understanding of where I came from and the coincidences I have had in my life, I jumped head first and whole heartedly into my practice. Wanting and needing to know everything from past to present about the history of witch craft in general. I began realizing I had to find close facts and my own beliefs threw all the abundance of info out there on the big wide web. I had made a silent internal request in passing of I need some guidance I can connect with and not feel "silly" with the must dos and do nots. Along with many other strict practices I'm more of a your path finds you and you feel it when it does type. Long comment I'm sorry. I just wanted to thank you. I practiced Wicca when I was younger and my mother practiced Macumba. I fell out of the practice but lately have been inundated with conversations about and surrounding witchcraft and witchy things, so I'm leaning into that energy. I'm glad I found this video because so much has changed and there is so much learn.
I like buttercats and familiars, but i kind of thought there was a binding spell involved to get them to stay. Would that binding spell be ceremonial, seems there might be over lap in high magic and folk magic, and also, books are nice, for sure, but i would like to see you bless your garden, or a river, or a house, a lot of young people move to new ground often, or bless a special magical pie you baked for your neighbor for the scorpio new moon, everyday quick clearings maybe, and thanks for all the great info!
Yeah, i have liked how you are doing crystal videos in a series, and group some shorter videos, on each topic, but i think one group of videos, after all the crystal stuff we are doing is finished, maybe, would be like a video Book of Spells, like a clearing one, a new house one, a protection one, garden blessing in spring, i suspect they coordinate well with the 8 witch ceremonies per year, but i am just learning the calendar now, maybe a series of videos with beltane, yule celebrations explained with a spell or blessing to go with each. I like holidays :]

I was suffering (and still am, but working on it!) from depression and little by little seemed to be going down a spiritual journey, without really realizing it, which led me to witchcraft. I am so interested in all that stuff. I am an all or nothing kinda girl, but decided not to make any big jumps and respect the pace of my spriritual journey. There is so much to learn and it's all so wonderful, but its definitely a process and it doesnt happen overnight. Thank you for the information!

I can mostly relate to this. I am pretty munch estranged from most of my family. I am estranged by pretty much all of my father's side and most of my mother's side except for my grandfather (he's my loophole to connect with those of my ancestors). I struggled and still do struggle to connect with my ancestors and I find it really hard but slowly I'm working through it. I don't know what path you follow but I follow a very nature-based animistic path. To me, all creatures are my brothers and sisters (scientifically we all share portions of our DNA), and thus all creatures are my family. To me, we all descend from a common primitive ancestor. All life began as microscopic unicellular organisms floating in the sea. All creatures evolved from the same thing. These unicellular microscopic organisms are my ancestors, the first people to evolve and rise from the sea are my ancestors and I connect with them through the collection of all things like fossils, ammonites, petrified wood, really old rocks. I guess, because I have a hard time connecting with recent ancestors due to family issues, I've sorta skipped them and jumped down the line several thousands of years to connect with more vague and ambiguous ancestors.
I am so happy that you are doing this serie! :) One thing you said that confuse me is the hoodoo goes into the traditional, pre-modern category, but to my surprise... all the resources i found on hoodoo rely heavily on Christianity and the bible... So pagan... seams more traditional and ancient compare to that... can you explain this to me? Subject I would love to hear about: the concepts of Deities...a personify energy that desire worshiping and offering... this seams very much human concept and not Divine... like the All or The universe... that is all encompassing with no needs at all... This I can't wrap my head around... same with ancestors and spirit that need foods... or anything physical from us... this is mind blowing to me...
Souveraineté Sacré in regards to your question about Hoodoo, yes, it does contain biblical content. BUT like many African traditions that crossed the seas during the American and South American slave trades, the core values and practices are very much steeped in ancient folklore and folk magical practices. The biblical addition to such African diaspora traditions is what makes it a syncretic practice. Oftentimes, the syncretism of such folk magickal practices was all about self preservation and safety. As African slaves were bought to the America’s, they were Christianised and we all know how that story goes. Convert or perish. With all that said, the core values of African syncretic systems of spirituality, are ancestral and earth centric. They hold within their collective DNA a rich history that is born out of an ancient time and place. I hope this helps to answer your question.

I think bias is cooked into the recipe, If you learn to paint there are certainly basics that are shared amongst many styles but when you delve deeper a realist and an abstract painter will not necessarily aesthetically agree. Furthermore cultural difference will strongly bias and vehemently deny sometimes relationships to other practices. Somebody teaching you Wicca will probably be more formal than a folk magic practitioner.
Mel Lowe that’s a terrible shame. There is still a great deal of ego and subjective information out there being peddled by the holier then thou types. You do you. Learning is your solem right and being curious is a marvellous trait to hold on to.
