In this video, I thought offering this quick little warm-up exercise you can practice before you paint might be helpful! I am a visual learner, so something like this for me to follow along with before I paint every day would have been helpful for me decades ago when I was learning brushstrokes and water control. I hope it is a useful warm-up exercise for you before you create your masterpieces.
Practicing these common brushstrokes daily for 15 minutes will develop your muscle memory, your confidence, and familiarity with how watercolors flow and behave. The more practice and understanding you gain, you will feel better and better sitting down to paint, and your results will begin reflecting even this 15-minute practice daily!
I thought it might be fun to offer a worksheet and practice painting available for you in my Etsy shop!
You watched me paint it, and I priced it very attractively for you!
What fun, right? Your purchase will help me and YOU! What's included?
painting from tutorial signed dated and tutorial episode name
my pre-recording swatch I created with colors for reference (all handwritten)
more pre-work, showing brushstrokes, descriptions
Every painting is on different papers, depending on what I was teaching, different sizes, and meant for supporting you, although can be framed as well as a fun piece!

📜On PAPER, I’ve used Meeden and Artisto for many years, and you’ll see me use one or the other in most of my tutorials. My Meeden paper suggestion is 100% cotton, has a really great texture and is finer grade. My Artisto paper recommendation is student grade, handles lots of water, (still good for wet on wet) and is a bit less expensive.

✨I use a Meeden PALETTE - many available (see my store), but here’s a good one:

What a super idea to practice before painting!!! I’ve never spent enough time developing muscle memory and can now clearly see where the frustration comes from.

I know it sounds so mundane and obvious. Practicing the thin/thick/compound strokes/ “C” strokes, daily and pages full is powerful practice For muscle Memory! So glad you are practicing!

Thanks for such a helpful video. I really enjoy painting leaves and I appreciate how your tutorial showed how to blend two colours into one leaf. I’m working on the ‘pushing-pulling’ technique and enjoying how it helps me to move the paint.
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy Год назад
Im so glad that pushing and pulling technique makes sense. That is a technique I constantly use. As well as when you go from green to yellow, don't fully mix the two colors together, have some of the green on your brush tip and then go into the yellow (or whichever two colors your using at the time) and let them show up on the paper individually and partially mixed, this creates a beautiful result, vs completely mixing the two colors together. I'm so happy you are getting the hang of water control and moving the paint around intentionally!

Hi Cordula! I'm so happy, I hope this helps and is a video you can come to and rewatch before you get ready to paint. I do this before every painting. It is such a good warm up, and way to practice and create muscle memory! As well practicing the laying down of paint, no puddles is a skill that will definitely pay off when you master it! and you will!

I have been doing the practice work from your tutorials...I'm finding to be a great help. Oh...by the way, the tutorial of the florals that you painted which you saw while driving past, but didn't get to stop and get a closer look at, and wasn't sure what kind of flowers they were, I THINK might be larkspur???
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy Год назад
You know, I’m not sure either. Possibly Larkspur, I have an app that identifies all the flowers I take pictures of.. Injope with anyone who gets in the car with me, “I stop for flowers”! I’m seeing lots of Lipine, Lavendar, Snapdragons and I believe yes, Larkspur! I’m So happy the tutorials are helping. The warm ups daily you will Definately notice a difference, and after a week you will see How much better you get, the muscle memory kicks in and these brushstrokes become a no thinker! Somhappybyounare building your muscle memory, practicing and enjoying!

Hi from the Netherlands. I am a total beginner and I love your teaching method. I only have pans, not tubes. How can I control the value with pans? Just a lot of practice? 😊
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy Год назад
Pans are fantastic. I use tubes, although, I fill mypalett with the color so in essence, it is like pans. Its important before you start painting each time, to take a spray bottle of water, spray your paints, (I do the same) to activate them. give them about 2-3 minutes, then they will be ready. To control the value, play with creating squares on a sheet of paper, start on the left with a lot of pigment, the gradually add water and pull out towards the right. This will give you an idea of going from dark value, to light. Here is a tutorial that may help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k5cMnXKr_AU.html Practice this over and over, play with it. This will familiarize you with the water/paint ratio to achieve the darker and lighter values. I also have this warm up you can do daily or before you sit down to paint, to warm up your hands, develope muscle memory. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nL70DG_huCM.html Doing this daily will make you so much better with this medium, and gain confidence so when you sit down to paint, you will say, "Oh, I know how to create that shape, color and look"! I promise! I still practice daily. constantly. sheets and sheets Its very relaxing for me too! Happy painting so happy to have you here.

What a wonderful tutorial Debbie. I felt like I was in your classroom having a one-on-one lesson with you. I know now why I’m not succeeding in watercolour, I don’t practice enough to establish that muscle memory. I will practice this video everyday now before I attempt a painting. Thank you so much.😊
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy Год назад
Yes, I'm so happy you identified where you could improve. When that muscle memory kicks in, you don't even have to think about it. You just get used to how the brushstroke feels, and using the water/paint proficiently will, I promise, be huge for your paintings. Once you feel it, get it a few times, and you can repeat it! I do these little practices daily, over and over; it can be relaxing too if you put on some nice music, cup of tea, and relax and have fun with it! The good thing about painting flowers is nature has no rules! You can use any color you like, play with your petal shapes, and relax and enjoy the practice. Happy painting Paulene, Let me know how it goes!
