Beginners Guide - Choosing The Right Center Channel Speaker
My most important tips, when choosing the right center channel, for your home theater:
1.) Buy the center channel and then pick the TV stand. If you buy a TV stand that doesn’t accommodate the best center channel for your system, you will likely have to compromise on a center channel, which is the last speaker you should be compromising on.
If you already have a TV stand and the right center won’t fit, check out center channel stands, which would be a good solution for some.
2.) I believe the center channel is the single most important speaker in a home theater. Again, the experts say 50 - 70% of movie dialogue comes from the center channel speaker.
Most people should start with choosing the best center channel and then get the closest matching left and right speakers.
3.) Positioning - When trying to get the most out of your center channel, getting it properly positioned is critical.
Ideally, the center speaker should be as close to the screen as possible, this can either be above the screen or below. Get your center up off the floor!
Also, you want the center to be angled towards the main listening position (MLP) as possible.
Ideally, the center would be directly behind an acoustically transparent screen, like a movie theater, but like I mentioned, most of us normal folk don’t have that luxury, unfortunately.
3.) Budget Accordingly - If you have a $1,500 budget for your front 3 speakers, you don’t want to have 1,300 tied up in your L/R and only have $200 left for the center.
If you have $1,500 to spend on your front stage, it would be great to reserve $500 for each speaker.
4.) Keep the front three as close as possible, if you can’t have a matching LCR setup.
If you can’t have 3 matching speakers across the front, try to keep them in the same brand and series of speakers. Think Klipsch Reference Premier, Definitive Technology Mythos, Polk Monitor Series etc.
People call this choice timber matching. This will allow your receiver the best opportunity to send the same frequencies to each speaker. Luckily, with modern room correction, timber matching isn’t quite as important as it used to be. But it’s still important.
There’s some other pointers I could mention but those are the main points, when trying to choose the right center.
Thanks for watching, my friends!

Totally agree. My Center (Klipsch RC-64 III) might be overkill in my room, but man I can hear all the dialogue now. I even went and moved my TV up to make it fit in my room.

It’s much better to have overkill in this hobby, than it is to have deficiencies. Especially when it comes to the center. Excellent choice! I owned the original RC-64 and it was excellent. The RC-64 iii is supposed to be a couple steps up so I bet it sounds great. Thanks for stopping by!

All great points man. When I purchased my HT speaker pack the included CC was a smaller version that paired better to book shelves or the smaller tower speakers. In the last year I upgraded to the larger CC that had the same drivers as my towers. What a difference! The best way I can describe it is the speaker has more body, the sound carries more weight and authority. To one of your other points, matching the speakers, specifically the fronts makes a huge difference! I had PSB towers prior to my current setup, with a JBL CC. To my untrained ear it sounded fine. But once I got further into the hobby I picked up on the fact they had different tone characteristics. Keep up the good content buddy!!

My sound system consists of 6 SVS Ultra Bookshelf speakers (2 for the mains, 2 for the side channels, and 2 for the rears), an SVS Ultra Center speaker, 4 SVS Prime Elevation speakers ceiling mounted for Dolby Atmos and 2 SVS SB-3000 Subwoofers. First time watching one of your videos and was VERY IMPRESSED! I subscribed immediately! I have a pair of 6ohm JBL L7 speakers (which sound phenomenal) and was wondering if the Klipsch RP-504C (8ohms) would be a good match. I would rather buy the Klipsch RC-64 III but it's too not in my budget. Building a 20' x 19' room with a pool table (I'm a professional pool player) but only have about 16" maybe 18" tops of room between the speaker and the wall. The 504C is 14.4" in depth and is ported so was wondering if it'll sound the same if I put it a couple of inches off the wall. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your helpful tips and especially for your hard work and dedication to the community. Hope you're having a fantastic weekend!

this helps me greatly, I was struggling on upgrading my center speaker to something that is so so or actually to it right and get the one I want. Trying to piece it together. So I cant get all LRC at once so I'm going to get the larger center 9060 CS from definitive Tech. have the pro 1000 as my left and right currently. Want to get the 9040 towers eventually to match the center.

That’s a great path, to great sound! Nothing wrong with having a better center than your L/R for the time being. Since so much content, for movies and video games, it makes a whole lot more sense to upgrade that speaker first. Nice choices, BTW! I’m sitting here listening to my Mythos ST towers, as I type this. Hey Dustin, great video. I have a pair of Klipsch Heresy IVs that I use for both stereo hifi music listening as well as my right and left for my home theater but I cheaped out on a lower end Klipsch center channel and I have just not been happy with it. Feels like a serious weak point in my system so I just purchased a Polk Legend L400, it looks like you have one in the background there. Good center speaker?

Many 2-way 3-driver center MTM (midwoofer, tweeter, midwoofer) channel speakers have issues with interference between the drivers at an angle, or phase cancellation. This means they really only sound good directly in front of them. MTM speakers, which also include the new Polk “Slim” center speakers, including the XT35, S35, ES35, R350, which have a MMTMM or MMMTMMM setup, have noticeably less midrange off to the side, which could be an issue for hearing dialogue properly. I think of MTM center speakers as being like an LCD tv: poor image (or sound) off to the side. The 3-way center speakers, on the other hand, are more like an OLED: they don’t have this problem, but they are expensive.

I been gifted a paradigm reference studio series CC-490 v5. Never knew what realistic sound was until this speaker. The speaker dissapeared and the sound stage just opened up. Need to find some matching speakers for the fronts now. Klipsch kind of clash with paradigm sound. My center channel speaker is huge. It is 10 times the size of my small klipsch quintet I use for the fronts. I love having a big center channel.

Good video, my next upgrade is going to revolve around center channel performance then picking the LR based on what bookshelf speakers match. Considering how important a center channel is you'd naturally expect it to have a lot of reviews for them but there's almost no content for center channels unless it's tacked onto a LR review. Edit: Case and point try to find measurements for center channel where it shows vertical and horizontal off axis response which is super important for a speaker that's usually horribly positioned.
@blazermdx
@blazermdx 3 года назад
Towers and bookshelf speakers definitely suck up most of the attention. I love those speakers also but the center is the star, when it comes to movies and video games. I’m with you on hardly any measurements of center speakers. Might be an excellent series of videos for me down the road but I’m trying to keep things a little easier to understand on the beginners, thus far. I always enjoy your comments. Thank you for the continued support!

@@blazermdx Yeah that makes sense for you considering your channel name is literally average guy hifi and measurements are definitely something the "average guy" doesn't necessarily look at and usually doesn't understand. If I do decide to start making videos it will be documenting my center channel upgrade experience and taking measurements but I know that's a lot of work so I need to make sure I have the time to do it. IE being the change I want to see. Definetly think that I could carve myself a unique spot in the HT space along with utilizing my computer science background to get some unique stuff. Hi Dustin! Just became a fan of your channel. Asking for your advice. I'm currently looking on upgrading my bedroom setup particularly the front channels. Currently, I have a Polk Audio ES10 for the Left and Right channels and I am looking to match a center speaker for those. Would the Polk Audio ES30 be alright even though it has slightly bigger drivers than the ES10 or should I go for the ES15 which has the same driver size? I worry that the volume difference would be noticeable if the drivers don't match. Cheers!

Hi Dustin! Love your content, it has been really helpful an informative on my journey to build a modest home theater room. Perfect timing for a Right Center Speaker guide. I have a question: I just got the Klipsch RP-504C (5.25" woofers) with a pair of olds Kenwood LS-G4 (5" woofers), looking forward to upgrade it. Should I go with a RP-500M(5.25") or RP-600M(6"), I hear about keeping the same woofer size and spec is better for sound imaging and consistency, or should I go for the 6". My Sub is the R12W, and the satellite are 3.5" Klipsch from a Home Theater pack, surrounds and two on the celing for atmos, is a small room (9.8 square x 8.8 height) Looking forward to your reply and content, patreon? Stay safe.
@blazermdx
@blazermdx 3 года назад
Thanks for the compliment, my friend! That’s a tough one, really. I would likely go with the 500M in that situation, unless you listen to a bunch of 2 channel listening. If you are planning on listening to 2 channel, I would jump up to the 600Ms. I really like matching the front 3 as much as possible, obviously, but the 500/600M are pretty darn similar and both were designed to go with that awesome center. Just make sure you try to get the tweeters as close to ear level, when seated, as possible. If you can’t have the tweeters at ear level, make sure you get the front 3 speakers angled correctly. You will be happy with either of those options though. I hope that all makes sense but just let me know if you have any other questions. No Patreon, unfortunately but a few folks have asked. I appreciate you asking though!

@blazermdx 2 года назад
It’s usually considered the best path to have as close to matching LCR as possible. With that said, if you’re having a hard time with dialogue on your C20, it would definitely be a good idea to upgrade the center first. I’d probably skip the RP-440C and go with a RP-600C. I think having the larger woofers and tweeter, would help you with clarity. Otherwise, if you have the budget, the RP-450C would be my choice over the 440C but I’d still probably go with the 600C. Also check out your used market for the RC-62, which is the predecessor to the 600C. I will warn you though, once you upgrade your center, you’ll likely want the matching L/R:)

Sorry to hear you had to start your system over from scratch. The good news that if you take all your past audio experiences, when choosing your new gear, you will likely be able to beat out your previous system. It looks like you are looking at two channel amps or integrated amps so you wouldn’t be able to hook up a center channel correctly. If you are just looking for a nice 2.1 system like you mentioned, those BassX products will likely make you a very happy camper. Otherwise, check out the used marketplaces for a nice receiver, to get you by. Nice quality receivers can be underrated, when it comes to 2 channel listening, especially if you are planning hooking everything up to a TV. The good news is if you are patient, you don’t need to have a bunch of money to have great sound. Kind of the point of this little channel:)

hello. i would like to ask to ask something. I have recently bought klipsh r51m for fl and fr speakers. Now its time to buy the center channel and i want something really nice . I am between r52c and rp500m. i know rp500m its from the premiere series of klipsch so its superior to my r51m.Will i have problems if i buy this product? It will make my system unbalanced so the superiority of this center speaker will go wasted? thx for any answer given
@blazermdx
@blazermdx 3 года назад
That’s a bit hard to answer without knowing a couple things. Are you happy with the sound of the R51’s? I ask because if you are already thinking about upgrading them down the road, 100% feet the RP500. That way, you won’t have to buy a new center if you get the itch. You can then move the R51’s to surround duties. The RP series is a noticeable step up in performance and sound. It isn’t a bad thing to have your best speaker in the center. Ideally, like I mentioned in the video, having 3 matching speakers across the front is ideal but most of us don’t live in an ideal world:)
@ProfessorOzone
@ProfessorOzone 5 месяцев назад
So if you have a 7.1 surround sound system, it's ok to have a different brand/type of speaker for the speakers that are NOT in the left-center-right positions?
@blazermdx
@blazermdx 5 месяцев назад
With these modern receivers, it’s not as necessary to have all speakers the same brand/series. It would be ideal to have all matching brand/series speakers but I’ve had some amazing results, mixing and matching. But if you have surround speakers, they should match if possible and same with other pairs of speakers in your system like surround back. You might to spend a little more time level matching but it would be time we’ll spent. Now for the front 3, you want those to match as closely as possible so you have seamless panning and similar timber.

I don’t have a projector or an acoustically transparent screen. With my TV, how would I position a bookshelf as a center speaker if I went with that option? Lay it on its side?
@blazermdx
@blazermdx Год назад
Ideally, the bookshelf speakers would all be upright. But I also understand this option isn’t always feasible, with most TV stands. If you lay a bookshelf on its side, you really need to make sure it has great vertical and horizontal dispersion. Brands like KEF have good options for this positioning. Otherwise, just keep your traditional center. They aren’t terrible or anything in most instances, just not ideal. We can only hope for a cavity and transparent screens:)

Hey there, can you recommend a reasonably priced sub that will go below 15h? and one that also has a relatively small sized footprint? i.e 10"/12" woofer? Thanks.
@TylerStout
@TylerStout 3 года назад
Pick two: Small, cheap, good performance. Smaller enclosure makes it less efficient meaning you need to compensate with more power and driver performance which costs money and if you don't you just don't get as good of performance. Same goes for sealed subs they are less efficient in design compared to ported subs to hit the same amount of low end output. Provided hitting 15hz is hard to do at all so to expect that at any reasonably loud volume isn't practical so I don't really see the point since there isn't much content down there besides maybe pipe organs and hitting 15hz and some low end movie lfe but in order to feel that you're going to need a decent amount of spl so stuff that's rated to 15hz and is sealed probably isn't going to provide that at any sort of loud volume levels.

@@thehal991 I'm just being realistic. I have 2x HSU VTF2-MK5 at $600/ea which is a huge sub (ie good perf and good price but bad size) but I've measured down to 15hz in an open concept room with them but i doubt the KC62 is hitting 15hz at the same CEA-2010 spl output numbers that bigger subs are at $1500 like Rythmik FV15HP, PSA V1512/TV1512 or HSU VTF15H. My point was are you really going to feel something that's maybe 15hz (or 10hz) if it's at -20db below? I'd rather have something that only hits 18hz but does it at 100db over something that can hit 15hz with a steep roll off like you'd find on most sealed subs that will be smaller like Rythmik L12 or F12 or SVS SB2000 pro or the new SB1000 pro that might hit 15hz but it wont be with any significant output.
