Visual Speaker Stand Buyer’s Guide
Most Important Things To Consider, When Shopping For Speaker Stands:
1.) Height
When it comes to what height you should choose, make sure the height of your stands puts the tweeters as close to ear level, when seated, as possible.
This is especially true for the 5 - 7main ear level speakers.
2.) Weight
Pick a speaker stand that is more than enough to support the size and weight of your speakers.
If you have 30 lbs. speakers, I would play it safe and get stands that are rated 40 + lbs, just to play it safe. Can never have overkill here so I tend to take my stands to extremes.
3.) Stability -
If you are putting the stands on carpet, I generally want a heavier stand, at least that of the speaker it’s self. I also look for speakers that have a larger footprint, to give them the most stability possible.
Both the above are even more important if you have small children. People with small children usually like to mount their speakers above the child’s reach but if this isn’t an option, you should have heavy and stable stands. Many people like filling hollow stands with sand, to make them even more stable than body towers.
Many say that they get improved bass response, when they added mass to their stands. Many stands have adding sand as an option but you will need to specifically search this type of stand out.
Feet should also be a part of this category. If you are on carpet, carpet spikes are advised. This would even work on hardwoods but you will need to invest in metal speaker spoke “saucers”, to go between the shine and your precious hardwoods or other hard flooring.
4.) Budget -
After you’ve figured out the height you need, the weight requirements, now you need to find the right stand for your budget.
I’ve seen speaker stands from about $30 new, to about $1,200 used. I would say that a reasonable budget for speaker stands should be in the 15 - 20% of your speaker value. That’s just my opinion and I’m sure many will disagree with me, that’s just my thoughts on the subject, after owning so many speakers and stands.
5.) Adjustability -
This goes back to the height criteria above but sometimes, to get the correct height, you will need to go with adjustable speaker stands.
There are a few types of adjustable stands. The “collar joint” style, where you twist the collar to adjust the height. Another is a type that has a spring loaded “button” that pops into different height holes. The final and my most preferred, the style that uses a set-screw to adjust the height.
Everyone has different opinions here, those are just the different style adjustable stands from worst to best, set-screw being my favorite type.
6.) Do You Need Cable Management -
This is the only way to go for those like me that try everything possible to avoid having to look at wires.
Be sure to check if the holes will accommodate banana plugs or spades, if you have that type of wire. If found many of the stands, especially the metal stands, don’t account for this type of wire which has been pretty frustrating to me over the years.
7.) Looks -
This is more important to me than most out there so I personally would have put this category above a couple of the others but I know I’m the minority here.
Be sure to pick speaker stands that match your decor as they are usually pretty impactful, visually, in most home environments, especially small ones like mine.
