I bought one canna lily about three years ago. I now have a massive clump of about 30, 6 foot tall canna lillies. I’m so afraid to dig up the clump because I want to separate them and plant them all around my home. I don’t want to destroy the plant.
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 3 месяца назад
Dividing cannas is actually good for the plant and you should not feel afraid. By dividing you give them room to grow and not to compete for water and nutrients. Just dig up the clump, separate the rhizomes and clean out the dead bits and then plant. The beauty of cannas is that they are fast growing. Good luck and Happy gardening.

I remember as a child we had whole walls of these flowers growing on the territory of a special school. Then they disappeared. Apparently they stopped planting. But this year I plan to plant canna lilies at home in the flower garden. Thank you for such an instructive story. Now I know where to start. Good luck to you and the growth of your plants.

I sadly lost all my cannas two years ago in the long cold winter we experienced in the UK. I think the greenhouse actually acted more like a fridge and held the cold within. Cannas are my absolute favs for duping a tropical local in the Canadian prairies 🌈PS: those Canna “Tropical “, the ones with the striped leaves, in a 1 gallon pot costs $55 in Canada! So propagating is economical even though unlawful because of the growers proprietary stamp 🙄

Thanks for a great video. I bought my first canna 6 months ago and placed it in a pot, in the shade by my frog pond, then pretty much forgot about it. I removed the pot a week ago and discovered it had a heap of shoots appearing! I had no idea it would do that. So I began hunting for videos to learn more, and of all the ones ai found yours is definitely the most informative! Question.. if I plant it out and leave it in place in the garden, will it continue to multiply, or is it necessary to lift and divide each season? Thank you and I look forward to seeing more of your happy place!
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 22 дня назад
Hi thanks for sharing.Yes you can divide it and replant it. Cannas have Rhizomes which are underground stems which is where the shoots pop out. For as long as you water the plant( they are thirsty plants) they will producing more shoots. It is also advisable to lift and divide Cannas as the roots do spread fast and can get congested during the growing season. I would suggest you enjoy your lovey Cannas for the time being.

@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 3 года назад
Hi Barbara Sorry to hear about the wilting. Cannas love water, keep watering the plant. Make sure you water the soil as sometime sprinklers don't actually get the water in the ground, as you get a runoff from the leaves. Take a hose and soak the soil directly next to the canna. Let me know in a few weeks if it picks up

Thanks a lot for this very informative video. I really liked the propagation part even if you did not show an update of the propagated Cannas because you instead mentioned their growth behavior of always wanting to be in clumps, so dividing should induce them to produce new shoots. It would really be great if you have an update video of the ones you divided here. How long does it take for a newly divided plant to produce new shoots? I hope this method will also work with other plants related to Cannas like Heliconias and Alpinias.
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 3 года назад
Thanks for the suggestion, I will follow up on that. With the Canna lily it took roughly 2 months to see the sprout and from there the plant took off. Rhizomes are great and the same method of division can be used for Heliconias and Alpinias. I have noted and will do an episode on the above. Thanks so much

@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 года назад
Hi Canna lilies need a well drained soil and full sun. When watering the canna make sure you water the roots and not from above. The leaves are a bit waxy so the water just slides off and therefore you lose the water. Have a look at our episode on "How to increase your blooms and storing the Canna lily during the winter months" . I covered pruning of flowers and foliage. don't know where you live, but we live in NE Georgia in the U.S. and I am learning how to scarify my seeds and want to grow my yellow Canna Lilies in pots but how hardy are they if you put in the ground? do they Winter over in mountainous areas... We are in zone 7a... What kind of soil do they prefer if you plant them in a pot or outside? Thank you. Your video is wonderful

Hi Joanne sorry for late response. With the canna seeds I would sow the seeds indoors around this time of the year. Ask at the garden center if they have a germination medium for propagation. I would not risk planting the seeds outdoors as the weather at the moment seems quite erratic and as this is your first venture we want a success story. With overwinter preparations in zone 7 - 10 they can be left outside in the ground over winter. But this should only be done in areas where the ground does not freeze. If the rhizome freezes it will get damaged and you may lose your plant. The alternative is to store the Canna and their dug up rhizomes in the basement etc. When planting Cannas always remember the soil has to be well draining. This applies for indoor and outdoor. The reason being that the rhizome is susceptible to root rot. I hope i have answered your questions. Good Luck with your lovely Cannas

Hello, I was searching for a way to propagate or divide cannas. When your video was recommended. I was on the right track. I’ve had these two, one is a variegated green and yellow leaf that blooms an orange/red and the other green leaf that blooms a blush pink they are planted in these huge glazed pots. I have been wanting to add a burgundy canna, hopefully one that blooms pink. Cannas are so beautiful and forgiving, I really love 💗 them in the garden, I’ve seen hummingbirds go to them all the time. But now I’m curious as to what color your new canna turned out to be.☺️ Did it bloom yet? Thank you!😉👍🏼

Hello Alice. This is a great video. Can I ask how much garlic to put into the chilli garlic and onion spray? Many thanks.
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Год назад
Suzie try this : 4 cloves of garlic and large onion plus 2 teaspoons of chilli. Blend it in a blender. Once blended add two large coffee cups of water, plus a teaspoon of liquid soap and mix. Leave it overnight. if you find it too concentrated, you could dilute a bit more with water ( in total about a litre). Keep me posted on the results. Merry Xmas!

Hi Lee, propagation can be done during spring as the weather gets warmer. Propagation works better when there is warmth and humidity. Do you store your Canna over winter?

Will spraying a solution of Neem Oil on the Canna plant prevent rust, diseases & other insect infestation? Your red soil reminds me of the soil in Georgia, USA - also laden heavy with iron. Thanks.
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 месяца назад
Hi Neem is organic and I prefer it because I have dogs. With Neem you will have to repeat the application every 2 weeks until the Rust or other infestation is eradicated. Also remember that Rust is a fungus and thrives in places where there is a lack of circulation and humidity. So by removing some of the foliage and allowing air to circulate will help. In addition, try watering the soil and not the leaves will also help. People do use fungicide and it does get rid of Rust very quickly.

I have a corner in the backyard where these have completely taken over. I've been trying to figure out what kind they are because I was thinking of digging some up and selling the bulbs. The leaves are green and dark red/purple, and the flowers are red. They are huge, 6-8 ft tall.

Hi Haley, it could be a Tropicanna. Take a leaf to a garden center and see if they can identify the Canna. Good luck with selling you Cannas

Where is your garden? I'm in North Florida, where we get frost. My soil tends to be dry, but there are certain flower gardens I water every day. Perhaps I can grow them there with soil amendments. What would you recommend?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Год назад
Hi I live in Nairobi Kenya. By adding compost in the soil it will help retain water and also to make it well draining. You can then add mulch over the soil and as it degrades this could also make your soil more porous.

How long can you keep them out of the ground like that before they die?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 7 месяцев назад
During the winter so dig them out and store them. However, part of the Cannas life cycle is that the rhizomes need to be planted in soil after dormancy period unlike bulbs, which can survive without moisture. If not planted the rhizome will dry out and die.

Thank you for sharing this amazing video. I love canna lilies. I live in Canada, so I have to remove the roots from the garden before the winter. Here is my question, when I replant them, rich foliage comes back, but the flower is small, skinny and thin. Not very rich looking, even though it is healthy and growing tall. I tried buying plants from the nursery, they had rich and large flower when I bought them. The next year the flower is very small and thin, I hope you can help me. Thank you

@@chriskowalski7038 Hi Chris! I live in Brockville, ON. Same problem (?) of small late blooming flowers on very robust plants. I've been growing them 4 years now, always with the same result. Rhizomes multiply like crazy, so no question that they are healthy. Maybe flower size is just a trait of the variety? Either way, humming birds love them, so I'll just try adding new varieties.

My canna lily leaves are brown and new leaves are also look like brown why
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 года назад
Hi do the leaves have a brownish orange colour on some leaves and then they turn brown? . If so take a closer look and see if there are any spores at the back. If so it could be "rust", a fungal infection. Otherwise it could also be over watering or under watering. I would also advise you to take a leaf to a garden center and get some advice.

If I want to keep my canna lilies to about 4 ' tall can I cut the stalk down?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Год назад
Hi, the height depends on the variety. As the stalks determine the height. And the flowers come from the stalk. If you cut the stalks then you will not get the blooms. Check with your garden centre as there are dwarf varieties of Cannas. Also very pretty.

How to plant seed pods And when?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 3 месяца назад
Hi Emma, if you plan to collect seeds it also best to find out whether your variety does produce seeds. I have found that my red variety blooms and doesn't produce seeds. The best time to start your seed germination earlier in winter if you have a warm environment to kick start the germination. However, Spring can work as its warmer and it is the growing season in the northern hemisphere. The pod is hard, you could soak them in water and wait for it to germinate or file the hard coat until the white flesh is visible and then plant it directly in soil ( I have never tried this method). Keep me posted. I would be interested to know which method you plan to try and how the germination worked. Happy Gardening and good luck.

There is no garlic listed in the recipe. How much?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 11 месяцев назад
Hi Deborah, thanks for sharing. For the chilli / garlic spray, Get one large chilli or 3 teaspoon of dry chilli flakes (or a large chilli) and one bulb of garlic, add about half a cup of water and 20ml of dish washing liquid put it through a mixer. Transfer into a glass jar and leave it overnight to marinade. To use mix to a ratio 1:10. to water if the infestation is bad you can increase the ration of chilli garlic to water. Keep me posted if it works for you.
