I can leave my Cannas in the garden full time but do cut them back, no frosts here but wet and now cold. Am just under the snow line in Australia. A fine plant with plenty to give! Richard

Thanks for the video. Very good. I just pulled out a bunch of cannas for the winter and they grew like crazy. Just to make sure I am clear. When I separate for next year I really just need an eye and part of the rhizome. Is that correct? Thanks.

Hello I live in the UK and i have just removed my canna from the ground and i am drying the rhizomes off. I cut off all the roots have i killed them off? My plan was to dry them off and and then store them for the winter.

Nice video. I am surprised though, that there was no discussion on the roots. Were you able to keep the roots alive? Is that why they were never trimmed?

Great information. Thank you. Here in Alberta,Canada ,I have tried to winter my Cannas. But our temps can get down to --35 o c . I haven't had any luck. And 1 Canna sells for $7.00.

I watered both my cannas and callas all winter long, indoors. Both were in full bloom by early spring, and have been outstanding since. Foliage and flowers aplenty in Montreal, Qc.

@@cassieo4337 this is very encouraging news! I’m curious though, are they getting a lot of sunlight in the home over their winter months? Your situation would be ideal for me and give me the jump next spring but I don’t have a lot of sun exposure in my house that I can plunk plants in front of 😢 thanks in advance!

@@tonysopranosduck416 Little sunlight, little watering. Just enough to get them through the winter. I increased the watering in early March. Good luck!

I have several variety of canna ... but only one “red” one that is a very very large pot, with a plant that has multiplied so much, my red one seems to have stopped growing at all. It’s probably stopped growing for 2 months now - isn’t dead. It’s only 1 foot tall. Could I separate this now from other plants ? Or should I wait until closer to fall winter ? Thanks, btw, for this video !!!!

There are all kinds of potting media in the garden centers. Perhaps an add-on video to cover the soil in better detail would be more useful.

Faisal Shehzad you need to rub a little of the shell off the seed in a small section till you see white. Then plant the seed right after the threat of frost ends

You forgot the most important thing of all, if you are going to use a knife to split them it must be sterile, otherwise you will massively increase the risk of canna virus.

Cannas will bloom whenever they want to. I have some blooming at one foot tall and others in the same plot blooming at 5 foot tall. No consistency at all. Most of mine bloom at 4 foot tall. Also they grow much better in the ground, instead of a pot. I would never put them in a pot.. ever. Too much root restriction. OH< maybe you are just putting them in the pots for an early start .??? I sure would not want to be planting all my bulbs twice. I planted over 100 this year. Once is enough and the natural growing season works just fine for Mother nature and I.

I have actually had much better growth and blooms whenever I’ve planted them in big pots as opposed to the garden. Year after year I’ve found this to be true, and I have great ground soil. I buy a $7 quart pot in spring and by end of July they are 3’tall and full, luscious and lots of bloom stocks. I fertilize heavy though with fish fertilizer once a month and nitrogen twice a week. So pots are great, I think it comes down to the after planting care and sun exposure.

I totally agree. Cannas grow and do what they want! I have about 100 Cannas. They are all different Heights and they are all doing great. I have some in Large Pots as well that are 10 feet tall and are doing fabulous. I've noticed that the Cannas in full sun are not as tall as the ones in part sun. Also, I grew Cannas from seed this year for the first time. (the seeds were from last years harvest) I started them in cups in the winter (after Scarifying them). It took a good six/seven weeks for any sign of growth but I did it! Once it was warm outside and a few hot days, they started growing!
