what to look for when choosing your next precision long range Bullet (according to me)
in this video we take an informative approach at the primary things you want to look for when selecting a bullet/Ammunition for your long range rifle,
in terms of the tools we use when long range shooting this will be covered in a separate video from the Kestrel (essential tool)

One comment from a Prior Sniper. If your simply shooting for accuracy do NOT throw the bolt fast or even quickly. Nice and slow seats the rounds perfectly. Fast is for war

Berger bullets, Lapua brass, reload. I have compared Hornady ELD-M with Berger and Berger has almost no deviation from the stated weight. Same with Brass, comparing internal volume and case weight, Lapua is the best I have found.

Been in the game for a while, started in National match High Power with a Garand, had a M1a built and fed it with H4895 and Hornady 150 fmj's. Sub moa performance at a happy price, can't beat them for a 30 cal. and I've shot buckets of them over the years. Now that I'm out of that game and pushing out looking for smaller and smaller groups out to 500 yards I picked up a Savage 10 Tactical in 6.5 Creedmoor and topped it with a Vortex 6x24x50. With all the powders I had to choose from I settled on Win Staball 6.5 (almost a universal powder) and the Hornady 140gr ELD-M bullet. It shoots very 1/2 moa if I do my part but I spend most of my time on case prep. I think that makes the real difference. Sorting by make and weight, cleaning, trimming, flash hole reaming, resizing and shoulder bump and so on. I've found chasing the lands has little effect except in extreme circumstances and consistency is the key with a .002" bump and using quality components. If you're handloading I imagine you could do an hour on just case prep.

I have no experience with 6.5 Creedmoor but my best results with 6.5/284 have come from RE-22. With irons at 1000 yards in prevailing wind always HM scores with high X count. Fist experience was in match 531 long range championships in 2003 shooting a clean and 14 X’s.

@@charlesludwig9173 Irons at 1000, been there with one of my Garand's at Camp Perry shooting 168 SMK's. Can't say I even held my own but I was on the paper, the wind off the lake is a bitch. I have been seeing a few M1a's chambered in 6.5CM but couldn't testify as to how well they shot.

First step is to find over 500m range in southern Ontario. There goes my dream. Now back to army surplus ammo. Other option is to watch you shoot on RU-vid.

Hi Dd Wayn, id recommend going door to door and visit farmers.offer what you would be willing to pay at a range, and i think you will find one willing. Thanks for watching

The way I work up a load is I load at the range and start with a mediocre load and fool around with seating depths, one I determine my seating depth, I’ll start increasing powder charges and I go as hot as I can until I either see pressure signs or til the accuracy drops, then I back off a grain or so unless I’m shooting in warm temperatures. Then I’ll again fool around with seating depths. Then if I’m not happy I switch powders and go again.

I buy mine from Higginson's powder (Canada) best prices on powder brass, although that was when there was some to buy

What are the cheap bullets that were not performing well? They look like the canpro 147 gr 308 that i bought a thousand of. I was planning on using them no more than a 100 yards but hoping they would do at least 1moa for target shooting Will use bergers or something good when developing long range/hunting

Ok so understanding that hornady eld-x does great at long distance but for example sakes what would you recommend for a hunter at the distance? How would that group size differ from the Eld-x bullet?

I recently purchased some new production .223 Winchester White Box and with irons I am getting sub MOA at 100 yards from prone sling supported position shooting match conditioned AR-15 A4. This has surprised me somewhat but reinforces it for reduced course practice, instead of shooting match grade which would only raise x count.

Don’t handload until you establish a benchmark for accuracy using factory match. And BTW exceeding factory match is sometimes a fruitless excercise, i.e. it’s hard to beat M118LR and Federal Gild Medal Match in .308.
@hardball107
@hardball107 2 года назад
I found the Gold Medal Match shoots very well in my M1a and M118 not so much. I've had great luck with my handloads using H4895 and 150gr Hornady FMJ's of all things. Both better factory ammo by a bunch holding 1moa in both the M1a and my Garand's out to 300.
@charlesludwig9173
@charlesludwig9173 2 года назад
@@hardball107 that’s pretty good shooting. Maybe I am lucky with M118LR. It is pre-production Lot A. I have shot it mostly from a bolt gun in 600 yard prone iron sight matches at 98%.
@hardball107
@hardball107 2 года назад
@@charlesludwig9173 I never exceed max charges, my rifles shoot their best with mid range or duplicate s of M2 or M80 but now-a-days I rarely shoot over 300 with the irons and luckily I can still place. I shoot John C. Garand matches mostly and at 68 I'm still competitive and I let my M1 do my talking. The last one I got from the DCM is amazing.

Also flat base bullets are absolutely phenomenal for 200 maybe 250 yds and in. A boat tail is a long range stabalizing bullet. They don’t often shoot well at 100 or 200 because they simply haven’t stabilized. You can spend $2500 on reloading gear and re load, or you can buy some store purchased ammo that will shoot as well. Their are a few brands of ammo that shoot moa out to 1,200 yards out of my 6.5 MM and my 300 win mag and 30 378
@Mike-xi4zt

I have to say that there are no physics equations to verify that a bullet will stabilize after being unstable. Once a bullet leaves a barrel it is stuck with the velocity and the rate revolutions per second that it got when it left the muzzle. It is mythology to say that bullets are overstabilized. The only way a bullet is overstabilized is if the bullet becomes deformed from centrifugal force and or heat. After the bullet leaves the barrel the velocity starts slowing down and the revolutions per second start slowing down and the bullet becomes less stable not more stable with distance. That nonsense you speak is mythology. Not based in reality.

@@michiganwoodsman2199 show me the the physics equation that demonstrates that a spinning object that is unstable and slowing down suddenly become stable you are lying and are making up religious beliefs stating them as some type of real experience. You can't show me any demonstration or any equation that proves your point about bullets being unstable and then suddenly becoming stable. You are a fraud and a fake and a phony. If you're not let's see the equation if you're not let's see the real life demonstration of what you say is true because it's not true

@@Mike-xi4zt I am enjoying my family at a Christmas party and dont have time to get my math books out lol. A bullet started bad will continue to worsen. A bullet started with a decent Ogive and spin absolutely gets better the father it goes. Especially non flat base etc. I understand going through life with a tiny dick must be hard but try harder buddy, try? Do it for all of the people you annoy on here! Now hush! I don’t care about you or your crap
