A very basic beginners guide to programming the flight management computer (FMC) in the PMDG Boeing 737-700 in Microsoft Flight Simulator - showing how to programme a route, how to modify that route, how to fill performance data, and how to view the route within the aircraft.

Thank you for this! I love to fly airliners and always just made the routes and such on the default MSFS World Map screen. Learning how to use the FMC, teaching us how to use Little NAVMAP, and actually dialing things in really adds to the immersion of the Sim. Now I have been using this guide to do a Rough FMC flight plan on the MSFS default aircraft! Thank you again so much for enrichening everyone's MSFS experience!

I've only had like a half hour with this thing and this video because I'm actually busy in simulator training for the real thing. And I find this thing dizzying. Not because I don't get it. But because I'm actually surprised how accurately it all seems to work so far. IRL we have the ability to auto load the route and the takeoff performance data is more complicated than what you see here. But as far as routes, menus, holding, it's all spot on. What will really break my head is if you can do things like abeam points, build points a distance from a fix along your route, or place points via place bearing distance. Those are things that are technically not necessary for a sim, but would be incredible if they're there. Now what we really need are the weather radar and RNAV(RNP) approaches.
@jonbeckett

The abeam points are difinitely there - in the FIX menu. Nice to have feedback from a real pilot! :)

Thanks for your tutorials, they are easy to understand the way you explain them. To the point without any unnecessary information. I have just bought a hardware MDU/FMC for the B737 and it adds much more to the flight. What I haven’t been able to find is where on, for example, the simbrief OFP I can find the info that the FMC needs, a video about that would be very useful for many serious flight simmers. Thanks again and keep up the good work!
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett 2 года назад
Yep - I'll do a video on simbrief integration soon - a few people have asked about it. It's worth pointing out before I do it - the integration doesn't load everything about a flight plan - you still have to go and review/revise it afterwards.
@krekel326
@krekel326 2 года назад
@@jonbeckett I have seen that and I think many serious flightsimmers would benefit from that. A clear guide about all the info you need to feed (and why) into the FMC at what stage of the flight and how you can use it. That video can also be used to make a good FMC “checklist”. Just my thoughts..

I have a sim coming up for a selection and I have not flown since March 2020 and I’ve never flown a 73, however there’s similarities with the big Boeings I’ve flown before. I presume the biggest issue might be the scanning, anyway great video! Should there be a snag in the programming there’s always a way of going back to more basic modes, but that requires some effort in knowing the Mode Control Panel of course.

Terminology is a bit confused in this otherwise excellent tutorial. A STAR is not a "standard approach route." It's a standard arrival route. STAR stands for Standard Terminal Arrival Route, "terminal" being a reference to the destination airport. Ideally a STAR (arrival route) will bring you to initial approach fix (IAF) of your selected ILS or RNAV landing approach. In this video, Mr. Beckett has in fact chosen a STAR, "ULMU2S", which he calls an "arrival," to take the aircraft to the beginning of the final approach. The advantage of picking a STAR, if you can find one that works for you, is that once you choose a STAR, all the waypoints along that arrival route will be entered into the FMC so that you don't have to enter each one manually. It's STARs that prevent a pilot "free for all" upon arrival at destination airports.

I am facing a problem after take off and on autopilot, lnav & vnaf but after a period of take-off it runs regularly on the navigation line, but after a while I notice that the plane does not travel correctly on the navigation line as it is entered fmc and that it is rotated To the right or left of the navigation points is very slow, i.e. the angle of rotation is very slow, which leads to the plane losing its navigation line..what is the step I missed to do it?
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett 2 года назад
You're not making a mistake - the real aircraft does the same thing. It very much depends on the speed you are going when you reach a turn, and if the aircraft can make it. On some SIDs and STARs, the constraint may be to overfly a point before changing direction - which will often make your track over the ground differ too.

Great instructional video, thanks for posting this. Question 4 you or the group here. I'm new to FMC- I know the basics. I paid for update Navigraph subscription and downloaded recent AIRAC cycle for my Plane in the Sim which is a Wilco 777-200ER. One question is, the new AIRAC cycle show correctly in my FMC CDU screen ok. But when I enter say New York (KJFK airport then try choosing runway 31L or 31R for Departing its not there listed as an option. It only showing 1/1 pages so there isn't another page. Only runways showing for KJFK are RW04L, RW04R, RW13L, RW13R & RW22L) thats it- No runway 31L or 31R for departures. Strange thing is on my FMC if I try seeing what runways are available at KJFK for Arrivals I'm seeing all runways including 31L, 31R. But I noticed its also missing IAPs- they show the runways but do not list ILS or RNAV approaches. Anyone have a clue whats going on or how to fix/remedy this issue? or experienced this themselves?

I would perhaps check a different aircraft, to see if it's a problem with the 777...

Does the Boeing have an option similar to the “Direct” button in the Airbus? How do I go about going direct to a given waypoint and bypass those previous to it?

Hi, how do you come up with those tiny labels when you click the mouse on buttons and dials?

In general settings, under assistance within Microsoft Flight Simulator, there is a setting for the tool tips - wether they are instant, delayed, or off.

Im Having a Little Issue with A Departure im Trying to Set Up What If I Want to Avoid a Certain FIX and Execute another one already on the Flight Plan?

If you're already in flight, just do a direct to. If you're on the ground, I'm not sure if you can modify a SID or STAR - it really depends on the aircraft - some allow it, some don't. I think the Airbus aircraft allow it - the Boeing may not.

Great video, again. I can actually (almost) fly the PMDG thanks to your tutorials. Could you give me just a hint why my TOD is (starts) always to late? I really have to manually dive to lower the altitude. Thanks in advance Jonathan ;-)

Have no fear of using air brakes during descent. They will expedite it. Real aircraft do it. While you might get 1700fpm descent rate without brakes, you'll get a LOT more with them.

@@jonbeckett Wow, I had once heard -600fpm should be the average. "Never to old to learn right"? 🙂 Have a great weekend.

@@eds5709 It's not unheard of for airliners to descend at FAR faster rates. The more time they can fly at altitude, and the least time they fly lower, the more efficient they are in terms of fuel burn.

Hey Jonathan Thank you for the tutorial. Can I ask a question? What app you using in navigating the map?

i have a question, I have to enter coordinates into my flight plan and I have no clue how
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Год назад
It can be done :) You can enter waypoints as coordinates, or as vectors from existing waypoints. I'll do another video on it soon.

I own P3D, but uninstalled it as soon as MSFS appeared. I'm not willing to spend >$1000 with OrbX and whatever weather systems to bring it up to the anything like the level of MSFS.
