I actually have my grandmas begonia! I never got to meet her, but my mom took a cutting of her cane begonia “Thurstonii” and I took cuttings of that one! It’s been 20 years that I’ve had mine, and likely over 45 years my mom has had hers. So special to me and my family ❤️ Great video!
I have a soft spot for begonias. My grandmother always had cane type angel wing ones around and I’ve always thought they were so gorgeous. I still have a giant begonia Lucerna she gave me as a cutting years ago from her plant. They prop so easily and thrive outdoors here (zone 9a) I haven’t really branched out to the rhizomatous ones because for some reason they intimidate me. Maybe I should give one a try again.
It's Begonia promethea because Begonia is female. If it move to another genera it will be (randomly) Epipremnum prometheum or Scindapsus prometheus. Recently Epiphyllum crenatum was moved to Disocactus as Disocactus crenatus for example.
Young Lady your plants are 😍 lovely. Ive learned thru many years of raising HousePlants. That they respond to kind words.an love an nice compliments!they are alive.Keep up the great work.look forward to more of ur positive videos.
I love the Beefsteak Begonia!! I bought a small one for $6 a few years ago and now it’s Huge and I also propagated a small leaf and now that’s huge as well! They are so big and beautiful 😻
I love this video. I just got my first begonias that you can't get at Lowes and I was unsure how to take care of them. I never liked begonias until now but there are so many beautiful begonias that I am hooked!
Great video! Thank you for the tips. It was actually your videos that got me into Begonias. I used to think that they were extremely hard to keep alive but when I saw all the beautiful ones that you care for I got inspired. It is amazing that they are so beautiful and different and can still be quite cheap and common. They are definitely underrated and it's great that you make videos on topics like these.
I have a little polkadotted angel wing and I love it so much. Ahh Maculata wightii Love it!!! That's what I have and honestly it's now one of my favorite plants
Begonias are the best! They should be ranted about waaaaay more. I traveled an hour away this summer and got an heirloom beefsteak begonia from a little old lady. Its enormous!!!!! and even trailing. She only wanted 6.00 for it I even offered more but she just wanted a promise to take care of it. I first started to love begonias growing up out in the country and visiting my aunt and uncle that had a house out there and near the woods. They always had bleeding hearts (which are so breathtaking) and tons of different begonias and I had the task of helping my aunt tend to the plants, that's where I saw my very first begonia and knew I loved this plant and plants in general. My current favorites are my beefsteak, Batik, Julau and Thurstonii. I was also fortunate enough to get a huge Maculata about the size of yours off Marketplace... I cant believe people dont like begonias lol. But thanks for this video 🖤 Long comment but how do you keep your Maculata from getting crispy tips? I've done everything and it even right under a humidifier. Homegirl is trippin! HAAAAAALP.
ive had a lot of success propping begos in perlite, i think its similar to water but they take up only what they need through the perlite. ive also seen other people do this method using mop material, same concept i think! they set it up like a self watering pot and the petiole gets water from the mop ropes. begonia propagation is so interesting.
i respect this new honest ashley and i’m here for all the new content ideas ! be the real you 😘 *also loved the old content lol* glad you’re doing you hun 🥰🥰
Thanks for a timely video. I tried to grow a couple of begonia from cuttings a couple of years ago but failed dismally with them. This year I got a lovely cutting of a Thurstonii and it's thriving so then decided to try a Begonia Rex which to date is doing well and has given me 3 new leaves. I have recently purchased a Cleopatrae which is absolutely stunning but because I'm scared of losing that one I have placed it into an enclosed fish bowl terrarium. Praying I've done the right thing. You have a lovely selection Ashley, thanks for sharing ❤
Not every cutting will strike, but can begonia leaves will never do anything more than root. Cane leaves will never, ever grow into a plant with a node. Shrubs, rexes and rhizomatous will all grow from a leaf or part of it into a new plant.
Hi Ashley I love begonias too. I highly recommend begonia Leopawn and begonia Hallows eve both from Steve’s Leaves. Also I grow some of mine under purple grow light and they love it!!!!
You helped me fall in love with begonia, once you talked about them I followed some begonia insta pages and found one I really connect with! I've had one for a couple of months and it's going great
Please know you cannot prop cane begonias this way. You must have part of the node or all they will ever do is root. She had bad information here. You can prop res, shrub and rhizomatous the way she showed,
Lol I didn't like begoinas at the beginning of my plant journey, but they've become one of my favorite geniuses. Thanks for making this video, I know you said you thought people didn't care about begoinas so you didn't know if you were going to, but I'm glad you did because I think there's a begonia out there for everyone. Lol
I’ve recently fallen in love with begonias. I have a Rex begonia - not sure of the id - but for the longest time I hated it and didn’t know what I was doing. But recently it’s been thriving and I’ve been dying to get my hands on more.
I just added Begonia darthvadariana x Begonia malachosticta to my collection! I will absolutely now be referring to it as "Darth Maul" LOL! Thanks for the great content
I love that you say your begonias are “silly” 😆. SO silly! I just picked up one from Lowe’s on clearance that I think is the “Kit Kat/ Tiger” one you showed! I’m new to begonias so this is my latest project. I also got a gorgeous “silver dollar” (I think) at a nursery. My interest is certainly growing! I have had a basic angel wing for over a year now and it’s doing great in my bathroom with a skylight. That’s where I have my Rex now, too.
A long time ago, I had a Rex that someone gave to me in Boston. It thrived on a marble shelf directly over a radiator in a bay window facing East? I think. Watered from the bottom, a lot, I believe. Wish I could try another one. Thanks.
I got a begonia rex before I knew anything about plants. Needless to say, I killed it 😅 I had 100% sworn off begonias. You single handedly opened my mind to giving them another try 💚
I love Begonias. I have a Jurassic cherry spike, strawberry and wightii that have flourished but also a few rehab projects from lowes that tanked but they were cute while they lasted.
I just found a really cute rex begonia Cumbia at lowes for $2, and now I think im obsessed with them. I just ordered a Botanicaz Hybrid 1 and im setting up a terrarium for it today!
It's promethia because the specific epithet has to match the gender of the genus, the genus is begonia, which ends with suffix -ia. So the specific epithet name has to end with ia too
I love begonias but I have a hard time keeping fungus off of them 😞 I know air flow is important for that so I'm trying harder. A couple of mine that I love that you may not know about are begonia jovian and begonia manaus!
I wish you could see how big my angel wing begonia is my mom keeps her in low lighting so are cute and compact and mine is in a west window and it so tall that at one point one of the branches broke m
I have one begonia in my collection. It’s got dark red undersides and dark green spotty tops. It’s very leggy, I pinched off baby leaves to force lower blooms but nothing much happening yet.
Awww husband help!!! Too cute!! Dat thumb kiss hahaha!!! I definitely want a terrarium and start a small collection. Do you have a terrarium starter video?
Hi Ashley! Just wondering if you are thinking of doing an Ilsemanii growth update? You’re really the only person that talks about ilsemanii on RU-vid, which I really appreciate.
My mom and I both had begonia escargots and loved them but they had a habit of dying back almost completely and then growing back. Not sure what that was about. 🤷♀️
Had so much begonia's a few years ago. Then I lost interest because they were to dramatic for my tast. And now I'm totallyyy obsessed with them. Making a aquarium/terrarium for them and I hooooope so so much I can cross some and make seeds (?) and make them grow and all that.
Dang, I've always heard you can't prop cane type begonias from just a leaf and that you need a node.. apparently now I have some cane begonias to go do prop experiments with!
@@PlantingAshley You will never grow anything more than a rooted leaf from a cane leaf. Please read up on how to prop begonias on the American Begonia Society website. Better yet, join! We have propagation demonstration videos available.
All my rare begonias from Botanicaz have died in a terrarium except my fav the Malichostica & Julau , a few hundred $ worth but it happens. I won’t be buying anymore 😟 Idk how she does it , definitely recommend the Julau just can’t dry out at all . I truly love the little rare begonias💜 U461 and Galaxy dead 💀 I’ve had Amazing plants from Botanicaz though that have flourished! Green Kloristicta omg 💜
You mentioned with repotting/not disturbing the roots, just surround with new substrate... around 11:54 it kinda sounds like you can use a sphag rooted "plug" and plant in soil? (As an alternative to surrounding it with new additional moss) Am I understanding that correctly?
Hi mom! Begonias are so beautiful and unique but I can't find any of the ones I want (specifically the begonia amphioxus) I live in Canada, and botanicaz is $190 to ship one plant. But I drool over their stock images ahah.
I want to love begonias, but I just don't have the means to give them the humidity they need! Are there any kinds for beginners that do ok with ambient humidity around 40%? Some day I will have the space for terrariums!
I love begonias! But they give me anxiety when thinking of leaving them for days... what do you do if you need leave for an extended period of time? How do you keep them from drying out?? (My drama queens get crispy or drop leaves as soon as I'm a day or two late with watering lol)
I don't think that's a pure wightii. Hybrids can even produce white flowers. The amount of dots on the leaves don't match a pure wightii. The leaf shape is off. It could be pure! Just thought id offer my experience as someone who has spent more than I'm willing to admit trying to find a pure ☠️ begonia collectors Australia Facebook group is very knowledgeable on the wightii topic.
I enjoyed seeing all your begonias, but you are giving bad information on propagarion. Every begonia can propagate from a leaf EXCEPT a cane begonia, like the maculata you demonstrated. Though the leaves can root, rooting is all that will happen without at least one node--this is just like those Hoya Kerrii single heart leaves that will grow roots and never a plant. Shrub, rex, and rhizomatous begonias can all grow a plant from a leaf or part of it. A cane, forget it without a node. You will see--then I hope you will do a video correcting this mistaken information on canes.
I hate the garbage container4s you put expensive plants in. Amphioxus is listed today at $15 to $25.00 for starter plants. And you put it in a literal piece of garbage throw-away cup. Did you even make a drainage hole? Nice way to disgust viewers right from the start.
I love how you only comment on her videos to shame her 🙄 and you said "unsubbed" on one of your comments, yet here you are. Leave this girl alone, she doesn't give a shit that you don't like what she pots her plants in.
She's talked about modifying disposable containers for plants, and i think it does include drainage holes if needed. (Drainage isn't always needed if you can see through the container.) I love the reuse/upcycle ethic of younger people these days. Her reused containers are a great example of that. And, shows she genuinely loves the plants for the plants, not for fake posturing about how much she spends.
I’m not disgusted at all. I’m happy she reuses. Drainage is not needed when someone knows how to care for their plants. I have succulents in non draining containers, plants that have lived in them for years. Please don’t comment crap like this. It’s her plant, she can grow it her way.
I thought you said you unsubbed to her channel a month ago lol, why are you still here and still pressed about something so trivial? Move along, Frank.
