Because it is an unfair competition. In EU there are strict rules against subsidization of private companies so that they can compete in the common market on equal footing. But China subsidizes it's domestic companies like BYD HUGELY. EU and USA started putting tariffs on Chinese EV's to level the playing field but if BYD just build their cars in Hungary then it won't work. And R&D that is a bulk of state sponsored subsidies will still apply to this factory so... It is simply unfair

wikipedia found in a 2022 study, based on World Bank figures, that more African governments' external debts were being owed to Western banks, asset managers and oil traders (35%) than to Chinese lenders (12%). It also found that interest rates charged on western private loans (5%) were almost double that of Chinese loans (2.7%) and that "the most indebted countries were less likely to have their debt dominated by China".
@PlaceHolder-br9pz

If you look over the latest reports on Chinese investment in Europe or Africa, they were mostly detrimental to the country. Only the people in charge that pocketed money benefitted. The best example in Europe is the Montenegro highway built by China, look it up. They will trap them in debt and when Hungary will be unable to pay, they will own strategic parts like airports. That's what China has been doing all over the world.

They use Thailand as base to export their cars the region and US to avoid the tariff. They will do the same in Hungary to access EU single market directly !
