Pointboy. You are quite right about the backfilling of the Mucurapo wetlands. Everyone has forgotten that where Movietown is located used to be mangrove wetlands, so that land reclamation beginning even before Movietown was on a grand scale as shown by the video. The place where the Port Authority park imported vehicles used to be called Spectrum. I do not need to explain the function of mangroves. But our administrations have a track record of destroying the environment. Years ago, under one, over 600 acres of Petrotrin's virgin forest land at Vessigny was bulldozed to make way for industrial installations. Residents were seeing all sorts of wild animals, birds and other creatures running wild (no pun intended) because their habitats were destroyed forever ! There was destruction of mangroves at Pranz Gardens, Claxton Bay also. Most of our population were not aware, and lots do not care. If ever you are going to Tobago by the inter-island ferry, look at the mountains overlooking the North Coast. You will see getaway villas here and there, poking through the greenery of the Northern Range. Who sold land in the Northern Range ? Who gave permission for an access road to be cut from the North Coast road into the mountain ? Reasons why the big shots are cutting more and more into the Northern Range and when floods occur officials would blame ITCZs and El Nino ! As it is, I edited my previous comment, as someone got offended. I am politically neutral. Please click on the link below: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XAi3VTSdTxU.html
Why is every discussion on issues in Trinidad seized as an opportunity to inject poison? score political points for the party not in power? Is it because of an absence of real love and patriotism? Ambition without love is a hell (literally) of a thing.
Back in the sixties when I was going to Fatima, that whole area, both sides of the river was all wilderness, wetlands and mangrove with lots of little crabs scurrying around. But it had one big attraction: plenty dounce trees laden with fruit. Thanks for the update on all the new development in the area.
@@_Miss_K_ that’s the purpose of doing business. To make money. More businesses more job opportunities for a growing economy and for citizens! Government cannot create all the jobs. It’s the job for the private sector!
That is lots of land there. That place had a barrier of trees in case of bad weather etc. Its Not Worth The Price Of Progress. Thanks Brother For The View.
Every time I'm leaving movie towne POS I always tell myself one of these days I'll take a drive/walk to see what's going on in the back there.. thanks for this😂
The EMA would have had to give permission for any landfill. If they did, the freedoms of information act would compel them to show the approval upon request. All detail about the landfill with names would be available.
Your comment prompted me to check the UDECOTT web site and they have it listed on their web site as one of their projects. They also indicate the type of development they envisage for the area and the extent.
You know better than most that the Chairman of the EMA was a former PNM candidate for St. Joseph. The EMA is not an independent body. The staff is powerless in the midst of this atrocity.
But are they going to put some magroves or something on the coast because that was there before and what's the point of reclaiming land if you leave it vulnerable to the very currents
The scope of wildlife in T&T is shrinking rapidly because of bad planning and greed, soon there will be more concrete than greens, but what they don't realize is that nature always win in the end.
We might have to do our own little part in re-wilding the environment. Mossyearth and Leave Curious on RU-vid show how they are working in different countries to do so.
@@TriniMonstera Re-wilding is a great way to go, but the four biggest problems when comes to wildlife in T&T is that (1) greedy developers will stop at nothing to fulfill their thirst for greed; (2) there are some people who are not educated enough about the importance of those wild animals and bees and other valuable insects and the environment around them. (3) that some people just do not care about the wildlife (4) not enough strong enforcement or laws with real teeth for the rules on hunting and environmental care. I remember seeing deer running in T&T (Santa Cruz) back in the 70s that gone, they held someone in South with 35+ agouti in his freezer, the scarlet ibis is being targeted and eaten...it seems like even though there is a hunting season, people hunt year round, Our rivers are becoming dry rivers. it is nonstop raping of the land in T&T, and nobody really cares.. To re-wild Trinidad and Tobago, they first have to make strong laws followed by no-nonsense enforcement and they would need at least a 5 year ban on hunting. But we can only dream :)
I work n one of the tall buildings on Wrightson road. From there you could see it is a massive project. I asked the same question you asked, didn't the government say "no"?
Reminds me of the changes that took place at the Western Main Road and Diego Martin Junction. Now Westmoorings Mall. Back then there was the Fatima sea scout boat house that was our start point to row from Cocorite to Monos Island to camp in 1962-63. What were we thinking???We left with three sea scout row boats and came back together. Yes ...Justice Stanley John was part of that experience. Thanks for the memories...rowing past future MovieTowne
Hopefully the 💧 don't flood back Up. As that take years to happen. For water 💧 to take back land As I am older now. Just like downtown POS South Q. Where the bus 🚌 terminal is What happened whenever 🌧 rain Falls it floods there Now 😢
Enjoyed the video. But this land reclamation was done years ago and the govt is now developing it ,However the public consultation for its development required by the ema act has not taken place as far as I am aware.
So much under develop land in the country they couldn't find anywhere else the greedy rich business people and the government don't care about anything except money I wonder how many of them would take their wealth with them when they die , this really upset me I think the EMA is responsible to
Thanks point boy for showing us this footage didn't think behind movie town was the ocean close by.Thanks to Lasagna Baptists for highlighting it in one of his videos I came looking for it.Great vlog as usual.
As long as they do what needs to be done, it will be fine. Backfilling the ocean front worldwide is a very common, very straightforward, very simple process. It's basically permanent once maintained.
Nice paved roads while some areas on the island filled with potholes. And you say high tides for fishing, or nice area for late night fishing/speed boats etc with quick drop offs of Gs & Ds.🤔🤔🤔 money talks!
If people wanted to use that area for high speed drop offs they would have done it when the area was mangrove so nobody could see them, not when the area has been cleared so everybody could see who in the back there.
The EMA is really incapable of making any moral decision on behalf of the mangrove and its nurseries breeding young fish, crustaceans and birds. The Chairman of the EMA was once the PNM candidate for St.Joseph The poor EMA staff. How helpless they must feel.
Wow. Just today I saw the road and wondered what they were doing back there. I wonder if they got a certificate of environmental clearance for such an eco sensitive area.
Interesting build, that is a huge investment, and one can only imagine either high rise residency and perhaps more shopping/entertainment. Trinidad has a lot of "private equity" when you slow down and start to really observe some of the developments in place and coming up. We are talking in the millions, people are convinced they will get ROI to support and cut those checks. I was there a year ago and visited the East Gates mall and the other one off the highway close to Seeram Brothers and was convinced! Money to burn!
Who knew? Pointboy, you are a great teacher, local historian, ,faithful custodian of the culture, a national treasure. The commenter, brownsugar, has put it perfectly. Love your work on the history of "Sando".
@@pointboy12 Please take your time : editing these videos requires a great deal of time and effort. Here, trying to be considerate even as I salivate. Peace, love, and may you be safe.
@@pointboy12 it is so. I grew up in st James. Those days it had no movie town. When rain start to fall all of us children used to be outside in the rain reaching woodbrook. Never had no flooding until movie town and the foreshore, because majority of the mangroves was removed. I guess that's the price of progress. But at what price??
I am 60 years old , and my grandmother told me that in her younger years , the waters there had reached as far as the edge of cocorite hils,so she was surprised why would they put buildings where the sea will eventually reclaim it back, and they werent even the climate changes we see today ,
If for some reason the development comes through...it is another port of entry for cruise ships right...are we putting a customs and coast guard there as well
I suspect they're gonna buildup a place like BOAT QUAYin Singapore, with the view of the water and huts with music and culinary from around the world. Ah jus feel so ! Worked for a short while in Singapore
What is earthquake liquefaction? Liquefaction takes place when loosely packed, water-logged sediments at or near the ground surface lose their strength in response to strong ground shaking. Liquefaction occurring beneath buildings and other structures can cause major damage during earthquakes.
It would be interesting to find out if any bodies were ever found in there. Years ago there was an old homeless woman who use to travel in the taxi with me most mornings and sit in POS all day. On evenings she would travel back and could be seen walking into that area and I have not seen her for years. I always felt like she might have died in there.
@@kawaibodhisingh8002 It not expansion of Movietowne but a new complex for residential, commercial and entertainment properties. It is being done by Udecott.
@@pointboy12 . We are each other worst enemies. The fight down when it comes to development in this country. Is why we haven’t been able to properly develop our country.
@@brownsugar2271 there can be development without the need for destruction. A lot of nations have found a way to balance both without complete destruction of one. But, it requires proper thought processes, which apparently we are in short supply of down here 😒
This is so sad. The crazy thing about it is Trinidad is NOT an overpopulated country, therefore, we have no need to destroy nature habitats like these mangroves to put up housing/accommodation, but as you said - the derwk chin vision of the world. The even sadder part is this was done on the hush, because citizens would have kicked a fuss for sure regarding the environmental impact. I would NOT be shocked if this is the work of very wealthy individuals, who finances well to the point they can get ALL approvals from all governing authoritities without an eyelash being batted against it. This is really saddening. Thank you SO MUCH for elightening us with this.
Thanks for the compliment on the video and voice. I did not know about a singer called Tiger in the 1960. I do know there was a calypsonian called Growling Tiger but I think he was before 1960.

I remember when they pulled out the mangrove trees from the area behind what used to a fish market in that area. I believe they claimed the trees would be replanted in another mangrove. But I drove pass every day and saw the uprooted trees on the ground slowly withering away. They were never replanted. I believe the fish market had to close down. I wonder what happened to all those fishermen?
Same thing they did to create westmoorings. And you can see mangrove saplings already growing on the water’s edge, as will always happen in that area. When the foreshore was built, there was no mangrove on the seaward side except at the river mouth, now the mangrove stretches half was down the highway and even grows on the landward side. Predict a new housing development coming there soon.
Thank you for adding to the discussion and reminding that the Foreshore and Westmoorings were also reclaimed land. I have subsequently learned that this is a Udecott project.
@@pointboy12 Of course, that's not to say that I agree with what they are doing. It seems that every time that the mangrove stabilizes, someone comes and moves the coastline further out.
@@edwardkacal2616 Makes you wonder, why do that - especially looking at it now - if that was all the land they actually reclaimed? Then they apparently do it again..... They are destroying the mangroves and many organsims to put up more unnecessary corporate infrastructure.
Nicee i look forward to it i think since Patrick manning days he had plans to partner with Derick chin to make invaders bay amazing for the public....Hope it comes into fruition one dah
I remember seeing a video a few years ago, that Mr. Chin was making a "park" with all sorts of atttactions; haven't heard or seen anything since about it and I thought maybe it was all in my " imagination" or a dream. So maybe this is it.
Yes yes. The foreshore highway was not always there. Neither was the national stadium and Jean pierre complex. All on reclaimed land. They are clear on the plans, was in the newspapers hence the road being open
This is unbelievable that this could continue to take place...l am asking what happens to the sea front? Who will inherit the sea front...ls it going to be the people of Trinidad and Tobago? Or the developers who are claiming this property? What was the argument in place for this? As l remember our first prime minister said the sea front and beaches belongs to the people of Trinidad and Tobago...l am asking again is that still so?
So heartbreaking to see what some business owners are allowed to do to our country. Greed!! I long for the day when we will rise up as a people and take back our land by letting these "leaders" know we have the power.
Not surprised at all. You can't have mangrove and wildlife nasty creatures behind all those beautiful buildings. It's called progress love. We have a very environmental responsible government... especially to their corporate contributors...they always responsible to them... don't worry...the northern range next....you ent notice???
That was a wet land and swamp area with birds and some animals. Its state lands. Which Gov't division authorised its backfilling, clearing and to whose bnefit.
More space for hurricane to pass through with nothing to stop it. I guess they are probably creating a Trinidad Miami. The question is , who or what will be occupying those spaces. God come down and save us.🙏🕊✝️🥳
i wished they had used some of that land to extend the port, its getting very cramped and the tobago ferry terminal is getting worse everytime i see it .
The port is to be relocated offshore the land from invaders Bay to the Hyatt will be reserved for mixed use, multistory housing, commercial, entertainment, administrative and hotel purposes.
@@sherazali1066 That would be something good if those two were the ones behind the development. However Udecott is developing the land but maybe they have the same plan.
