Behind Pakistan’s economic meltdown, a web of subsidies for the super-rich?

The deadline for Pakistan to secure a bailout from the IMF runs out this week, but Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif remains reluctant to enforce the austerity measures it is demanding. The reluctance, economist Uzair Yunus says, is rooted in an élite that’s fattened itself with public money. Watch #ThePrintCrosshairs with Praveen Swami

This just shows how incredibly fortunate India was to have Shri. PVN Rao as PM during our economic crisis. No other PM in our history (except may be AB Vajpayee) would have had the guts to do what PVNR did because it was political suicide in the short run (and, PVNR was out of power after his term ended). And PVNR did it with a minority Government (with support from ABV who was LoP at the time). The appetite of our governments to take decisions which are good for the economy but not necessarily popular ended with ABV's defeat in 2004. MMS may have had a personal preference to take those decisions, but he had no backing and no control over his party to push them through. And the present Modi Government is too populist and simply doesn't want to rock the boat and undertake further reforms because the economy is already growing steadily and it doesn't want to rock the boat and lose support from anyone. Whatever progress India has achieved in the last 30 years, it owes to 2 Governments - the PVNR government from 1991-1996 and ABV Government from 1998-2004. And Indian public unceremoniously kicked both of them out, ensuring no future Government will dare be brave enough to undertake bold reforms ever again.

During a bear market, the headlines will focus on negative news, whether it's declining economic growth, geopolitical upheaval, cultural and legal turmoil, or some combination of all three. The problem is Military has lots of business interests. They run lot of businesses. Every business man needs political connections. So even if Army wants to get out of politics, their business interests come in the way of such a decision. And importantly few Military firms have a monopoly over market. If they leave politics alone, naturally politicians will walk into that space to distribute their political power. And that will compromise Military's financial interests. And to top it, Military has a gun. They don't hesitate to point it to the heads of politicians. You see what kind of a knotted situation it is? Even if someone gives an advice they can't carry it through without some serious bloodshed on streets.

This was brilliant. I don’t comment much, but feel compelled to do so in that case, as I learned a lot. I sent in $100 sometime ago, as I think it is important to support creating such thoughtful content.

Pakistan military must shrink….Military can’t consume 60% of the economic resources….people will be left with nothing

Please don't cite India's numbers. Our military spending is far less than other players in the region. Train your soldiers better so you don't suffer the Abhinandan embarrassment despite 10x the budget. Your army misfires missiles, shoots down your own helicopters, gets caught with its pants down smuggling 3000 kg of heroin, and has now sanctioned a hike in defense budget to bail out Adani. Focus on that.

@@diwakarda1 Military rule? I think you mistook Pakistan for India. Our government does not sanction hike in defense budget to bail out army's frontmen like Adani. Indian army smuggled hundreds of tons of Afghan heroin to Indian kids and none questioned when the last consignment of 3000kg was deliberately caught.

We felt great shame when our country India had to go to IMF in 90s.Despite having large size, large population, having a big agriculture,we had to face such dire situation. But I think the main reason is the rampant corruption in Congress rule is the main reason.Congress party started a vicious cycle of corruption in this country since 1970s, which is still very difficult to break even today.Even after 9years of Modi govt., corruption is still happening.IAS officers lobby is still brazenly indulging in rampant corruption.I think that anybody having corruption in his DNA becomes IAS officer.
