Police-Community Relations has taken a tremendous hit in recent months. With all the negative police stories in the news, it seems impossible to find common ground between law enforcement and the citizens they serve. This talk explores the root of the issue, how we got there and how to work our way back, one interaction at a time.
Chelley Seibert is a retired Dayton Police Officer. Her assignments included Patrol, Crime Prevention, Media, and Academy Instructor. She has taught Cultural Diversity for 20+ years, and Instructor Skills Development through the State. Chelley was the first female in Dayton to be awarded the Top Firearms Award and was named Dayton’s Officer of the Year in 2011. Chelley has a BA in Music from Miami University and Master of Education from Wright State University. She has presented locally and nationally in universities, academies, and at the International Law Enforcement Educators Trainers Association (ILEETA). Chelley currently plays in the band Frozen Feet of Dayton, a choir director for Cincinnati’s TRU Choir and a singer/songwriter/keynote speaker in the Positive Music industry.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

This lady is very, very smart. Her experience has taught her so much and the Feds should hire her for police recruitment/training throughout the US. There is no replacement for on the job experience. She is a visionary. Great speech. You can tell she was a great cop. Her message is very sincere.

I love my country and I support law enforcement, but im not here watching this now for any reason aside from trying to find some sense and hope in the injustices ive seen or dealt with when it comes to the law and the justice system. Its so nice to see so many sensible and authentic law enforcement officers. Unfortunately, I only ever see them on RU-vid. I'd give anything to see more of people like this in my daily routine.

It's not the images we see on T.V. that scares us. It's the culture of the injustice system not just the police. When you put on that uniform we look at the patterns of how we are treated. Police are heros & sheros too but that's not the only reality. If I were an officer ofcourse I'd want to be loved and admired by my community however I already know the history of that occupation so that uniform represents so much.

Personally I like her talk about being a police officer. Although, I disagree with the officers learn the entirety of laws on the books. Also the training is far to short. I believe at least 2 years should be the required standard.
@danielpickrell8311
@danielpickrell8311 5 лет назад
Officers in the academy learn everything in the law that pertains to police work which is penal code, criminal procedures, traffic, alcohol and beverage code which is about 70% of the book. The rest is for lawyers, judges, rights of citizens and other law enforcement agencies like wildlife game and railroad police officers. That is about 6 months depending the academy, another 2 months or so might be for department training. Then you have FTO training which is 6 months to a year which is department depending before you can even be eligible to patrol on your own. This is how some academies and agencies work. You have almost 2 years of training and at anytime even through your career you can get fired. Takes alot to be a police officer nowadays

Why do I want to be a cop? Because they make good money for a high school education. Pay them minimum wage and see how the whole narrative changes.
@joepalkovic

You better pay them well or nobody will apply. With today's level of scrutiny, you almost have to be crazy to want to be a cop

It depends on what agency or Department you get on with a lot of departments especially in small towns can't afford high wages and pay benefits there is no one rule the pay difference from Department to Department!!!!!

If you want to create trust with the general public then stop accepting and lobbying for law enforcement officers to be given privileges that make them less accountable under the law then ordinary citizens.

@firstthingsfirst2012
@firstthingsfirst2012 7 лет назад
There's nothing that this woman said that would convince a person that she is or was a law enforcement officer. Now I know that might be the point she is making, but officers need to look different. They are different. They have to have a command presence. They have to display the authority of the law and the fact that they exist to enforce it. The fact that she makes a mockery of this and gets some of the audience to laugh doesn't mean that the appearance shouldn't exist. The negativity that comes along with wearing the uniform isn't about the uniform. It's about law and people's depravity and resistance to the law. Officers don't need to change everything to gain people's trust. Officers go into some places and are hailed as heroes, then they can go across the street and be hated. People come from different walks of life and experiences with the law itself. That's where the adjustment needs to be made.

while I do believe that there is a high probability that she genuinely means well, I also believe that she is seriously misinformed. To have an honest discussion about why civilians do not trust the police, we need to critically look at key topics. 1. The blue wall of silence 2. Minimal accountability for abusive cops 3.White Supremacists cops 4.Police brutality and cover-ups 5.The history of law enforcement . 6. The quality of training.

At 4:00 she mentions spent half her life as a "police officer" and half her life as a civilian. She IS a civilian, police are civilians they are not military; they need to stop that distinction that they are like military because they are not. She goes on and says that they need to develop trust between the police and the citizens they serve, well, it would be great if they the police stopped stealing(Civil Asset Forfeiture) and stop violating the Constitution and leave their egos at the station. I applaud her attempt, and she may be sincere, and G-d willing I am wrong but some of her colleagues would beg to differ, just look on RU-vid or the stories on alternative media for a different story. If she is sincere, than we need more people like this patrolling the streets.
