The coveted Bronze Badge dates back as far as 1912 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and in its current form all the way back to 1947. On the latest episode of Behind the Bricks, Doug Boles ventures into the vault to find decades old, and even a century old, Bronze Badge to learn more about the history of these collector items.

Back in the glory years of the 60's, 70's and 80's when May came around every year you could feel the "SPIRIT" of the Indianapolis 500 even if you weren't a race fan i grew up in upstate n.y and i could feel it!

Another great episode Doug. I have just one bronze badge, from 2019, but I am a museum member. I urge other racing fans to become members.

I used to have a collection of some bronze, mostly silver badges and the cardboard backups starting with 1972. About 1978 I started pinning the badges from previous years on my Canon baseball cap that I wore at the track. Finally the cap got so heavy that I had to retire it and the badges. I think I still have the cardboard backups tucked away somewhere. The badges I had couldn't be purchased, only those granted media credentials were allowed to have them. Bronze badges were generally for reporters and provided access to the media center and garage area. Silver badges were primarily for photographers and granted access to pretty much everywhere through most of the 70s before access was reduced as more and more "tourists" as I called them, those with sponsor connections, began to crowd the pits and garage areas.

Yep. I'm the same way. I have all my silver badges, back before you could buy them. Well, at some point you could buy them, but you had to be on a list, they didn't advertise it. Unfortunately I'm too young to go back to the cardboard backer days. They had switched to hard cards on lanyards by then.

I can confirm that a 1946 badge does exist. I've seen 2 of them. If I remember right, they were both brass/bronze. I'm not sure if silver badges existed then, or if they were all bronze that year. I'd be curious to know, do the gold badges still exist? I know us mortals can't get one, but are they still issued each year? I know they were a thing 20 years ago, but I don't think I've seen one since then.
