Follow Living Zoology during their travel and work! Episode 3 from Kenya is about searching for deadly venomous North-East African carpet vipers (Echis pyramidum). We wanted to film this viper species for our documentary The Most Venomous Snakes of Africa. Michael, a young herper, joined us during this trip. In 30 minutes of herping we flipped 5 carpet vipers (also called saw-scaled viper). It was amazing to film these nervous snakes, show their habitat and interesting behavior. We also found a Speckled sand snake (Psammophis punctulatus). Stay tuned for episode 4, you will see a Black-necked spitting cobra (Naja nigricollis)!!!

Excellent post. Saw scales are such aggressive little worms. Great audio to pick up the trademark sound. Can't imagine living around them, or, having children while living around them.
@limoucheu8522
@limoucheu8522 3 года назад
Not agressive, defensive, they never goes to you to bite you. They do that if you step on it, if you are to close from it or if you try to kill and fail. For this tiny animals an animal as big as a human is potentially a predator, than it will immediately in defensive mode. Before it is important to ear his stridulation it is a clear warning "do not approach I am a venomous snake and I will defend my life".

@@limoucheu8522 True. Poor choice of word on my part. Having agreed, they're sooooooooo defensive. :)

We agree! Living in that area with small kids brings a big danger. But remember, snakes are only defensive, not aggressive! Snakes only try to survive, they don't want to kill humans. Happy that you like the video!

We clearly see why the Echis complex is the amongst the most dangerous of all snakes, probably the most dangerous. Common in most of there area, elusive, fantastically mimetic, immediately in defensive and ready to strike at lightning speed, incredibly potent haemotoxic and cytotoxic venom for such small viper. Echis are true danger and having serum for these is a medical necessity. Interesting to show the stridulation scales of Saw scale (you see lateral oblique rows of serrated scales what are the stridulation organs a prove that it is not the advantage of these tiny snakes to bite humans, they warn loudly before striking (and here all of strikes are mock strike, "I show to you if you come closer I am ready to strike really). All the best.

Note to self: if ever in Kenya ,bring treats for the children. The saw scaled vipers are so illusive with the striking. I can see how merely passing a bush or rock they would reach to strike. Growing up my family lived in Mountainous desert of Idaho,and the baby rattler's would turn up anywhere,even in the out house. Soon as I noticed all those children,was worried for them. We had dogs trained for monitoring snakes,bet they do as well.

@@musictape324 I follow "Mirza MD Arif" in Bhadrak Odisha.. He really rescues many every day. Between Africa and India,they really are in epidemic because the basic manner many still are surviving in rustic conditions. Some rescues Mirza attends,some family hearing hissing and a Cobra is hunting dinner at the foot of their bed,then the silent Banded Kraits people roll over sleeping and never wake up. His region does not have as many Saw Scaled as Ghat Mountains and where rocky terrain existing there,but the video's I have seen,many slink out where one totally misses them being there. They blend in so well,sized to snap without even knowing they were there. Are you from India? I know Australia is loaded but Africa and India are a totally different Level. Black Mamba's in bedrooms, Cobra's coming in living rooms,but at least they are not so small as them Saw Scaled vipers.(People do not even see them and get bitten) God Bless them..

@@musictape324 I follow his NAAG LOC channel as well... Did you see today's rescue? the Spectacled hunted a huge toad on roof of complex and escaped into roof drain system and suspended up in the air. It sat in the pipe to rest with toad in belly knowing when ready to move again, could drop out of pipe and land in Shrubbery below safely. Knew the area well.
@aldenunion
@aldenunion 3 года назад
The snakes remind me of Little Rascal daredevils, comical rodent daredevils.lol. Yes those krait are silent killers.. As you said,the saw scaled must be seldom in Mirza's region because not as much rocky terrain but then when around rocks more frequent. I watched a video,maybe here? where children were playing soccer and the ball rolled to rocky mound and were small saw scaled vipers blending in so well could barely be noticed.. The snake rescuer shown here on this channel is good one as well, based in Ghat Mountains just not as filmed as much as Mirza. With all the snakes saved in India,one day India will be harvesting more from free animal for snake product revenue as tomorrows wonder drugs are coming from venom.Nice meeting you...

They are so tiny that for this animal every larger animal is potentially a predator than it came immediately in defensive mode and it is not real strike because the target is not close enough here it is clearly mock strike or bluffing but it is a clear warn "I am ready to defend my life".

As Li moucheu says, for such a small snake everything seems like a threat so they try to scare potential predators. When they really strike and bite, they mean it and use venom.

You notice you can bearly see any tall trees on the entire area. Mind you this area used to be a tick unpanitrable rain forest. Now it will be almost impossible to grow a decent garden on it. You want to reverse the climate that we are now experiencing. Well this is the starting point. Not blaming you guys, you are just dijesting what you've been fade. So instead of looking and try to understand it's ever shrinking life expectancy due to the lack of good and shalter, you are disturbing these helpless little creatures from their last hopeless refuge.

No, this area was not a thick forest. It is dry for a long time, only savanna habitat. The abundance of Carpet vipers in this region is remarkable, one research team found 7000 in three months.

To be honest, I see soo many western people act like these things aren't such a big threat. Its very surprising how one would wear shorts, small socks, handling the rocks and bags with bare hands. It's really just a show of unnecessary bravado. Because the people who actually live here do not have access to fast cars and antivenom. I suggest it would be more educational to show the true danger of these animals. Protective high boots, trousers and protective gloves for those handling things with their hands.
@michaels_herping4590
@michaels_herping4590 2 года назад
Hello Benjamin! How can socks and pants save you from Echis bite? They can penetrate this clothing easily. So shorts and small socks are ok :-). The main and the most important piece of clothing are high boots from leather, gora-tex or other material which they can not penetrate. And - like you can see on the video, every member of the team is wearing this kind of boots. These vipers are very small so they cant bite above them (if you are doing everything right which we did...). And the local people? I think they know much more than you or me how much these snakes dangerous are. They live with them everyday and they fear them. How will help to them to see our equiment? It is cool that they can see protective gloves, boots etc., but they cant afford it. They cant just buy a leather boots, quality torches or good gloves because they saw it on us to using it. It is very sad but it is true. And we didn't handle these snakes with our bare hands. I don't know were you saw it on the video. We are using good snake tongs or hooks. We are not sticking our fingers under the stones so we alway knew where we are placing our fingers etc...
@benjaminshauri380
@benjaminshauri380 2 года назад
@@michaels_herping4590 Exactly. Especially on the clothing made of appropriate material. TBH I understand that you guys know your jobs enough to school any of us on its details. But isn't it better safe than sorry? Yes a carpet viper is small, but such an ecosystem may have cobras, puff adders or a snake may be in a shrub that's above your ankle region. As for the rocks thing. We know how fast those snakes can move and can strike. For a slight microsecond, a person may be fully focused on the snake beneath the rock and yet there's another unseen to them camouflaged within striking distance to their palm. And you can't move away fast enough to dodge that strike. In short, your channel to me is soo far as dedicated and informative as it gets about the snakes. I think even if not by your own attire, you could put a disclaimer or notice about Not trying this at home, Proper safety wear if one decides to go to a snake zone, The nature of the relationship between the locals and the wildlife. I am born and raised in Rural Kenya myself. Spent my primary school going to school barefoot and herding cattle in the grasses daily. Then moved to Jinja in Uganda where 2m long snakes would suddenly fall from the asbestos roof into the middle of preps. The utter fear and respect for these creatures is by the fact that we cohabit with them every day and we see firsthand the devastating effects of underestimating their fierceness.
@LivingZoology
@LivingZoology 2 года назад
Matej and Zuzana (Living Zoology team) and Michael as an invited member of the team all wear good shoes and trousers. We cannot be responsible for the behavior of all local partners and other people who come to help us in the field. We try to be a good example and think about safety a lot. Even if we feel comfortable in many situations due to our vast experience from around the world, we are not taking any risks. Snakebite is a big problem in rural areas in Africa or India. People don't wear shoes, they sleep on the ground, etc. We try to educate them and help them to avoid getting bitten. Thank you for watching our video!
