The Holochess animation Easter egg in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was truly a labor of love, and the team who made it used a variety of interesting technologies to create it. This week, we return to Tippett Studio to chat with this sequence's art director, visual effects supervisor, armaturist, and head puppet fabricator (our very own Frank Ippolito!) about the fabrication of these stop-motion puppets!
See the holochess pieces up close in these photos: www.tested.com/...
Thanks so much to Tippett Studio for giving us access to this amazing process!

such amazing work and talent packed into just a 10 second sequence in the film. easy to imagine why the budgets for these movies become so massive
@Netsuko
@Netsuko 8 лет назад
+Colin Cochran It's learning about the love and passion behind creating this scene that really warms my heart and makes me happy. These people obviously care a lot about the originals, and it makes me feel like the franchise is in good hands.

Some animators looking for work of any kind and exposure tend to work for free now. VFX guys don't really get paid any more. I've done two movies with no money and next to nothing. Nobody seems to want to pay traditional artists, while CGI guys will command thousands. Colin Cochran

+ot0m0t0 why would it continue on from a game they were playing 30 years ago? pretty sure they would have played quite a few new games on it since then
@TheSlick447

+ArnoldTohtFan Ever since Chewbacca witnessed the murder of so many Ewoks, he didn't feel like playing games anymore... But nah, you're totally right. It's a nice touch and even knowing Han lost the falcon at some point down the line, you have to figure they at least played one other game since A New Hope.

I like Brett Foxwell's reaction at 22:30 when Frank says it was easy to put the armatures in the center of the mold. It was a real, "If you say so!" reaction.

Anyone who says "Ep VII is nothing but a cash grab" should see this. The amount of pure enthusiasm and LOVE for the originals by recreating this scene in the way the original was created, which only lasts a few seconds anyways just shows how MUCH the people behind the scenes cared for this movie. This could have easily been a one man, two day animating job in Maya (ofc I'm exaggerating a bit, don't take it word for word). Instead they went above and beyond to recreate this short, but memorable scene for us fans.
@Babalooza
@Babalooza 8 лет назад
+Netsuko Yoshikawa Just because the people who worked on it put effort and passion into it doesn't mean that Disney's initial decision to make this movie was rooted in making profits.
@Netsuko
@Netsuko 8 лет назад
+Babalooza lol.. okay so tell me. Which big movie ISN'T made on the decision to make money? Let me give you a hint: none :P That's like saying you like good food, but your initial decision to eat was because you are hungry. That doesn't make it any worse if the food was still good!
@Babalooza
@Babalooza 8 лет назад
precisely, but some are more money-driven than others. This is why we get 5 marvel movies each year and only 1 Citizen Kane.
@DucatiKozak
@DucatiKozak 8 лет назад
+Babalooza +Netsuko Yoshikawa I can see the underlying miff that Lucas holds towards the new franchise (he says he's good with it - but he admits he would have gone a different direction). Firstly, I was *thoroughly entertained* by TFA (I even cheered at the holochess sequence!) but it did not reach very far in plot and 'character dimensionality';. Even _'the force'_ was not further developed in this film. Because of these shortcomings, this addition will not be considered foundational to the universe when all the chips have been counted. Lucas can see that. Hell, he should even get a script credit for the plagiarism that the script makes off with. *spoiler alert* Look to the loss of the franchise's highest paid actor (highest paid anything for that matter). Beancounter Mickey Mouse can now cast an unknown for the Young Solo Chronicles and continue to rake $ in! I do hope the next movies can stretch artistic and character limitations put into effect in this addition to the Star Wars universe.

This is at once the most ridiculous thing - and the most awesome thing I have seen in a really really long time .. The amount of trouble that they went to to recreate a scene - that flowed on from the original - is fucking insane .. Even with all the absolutely ridiculous die-hard fans out there - I cannot think that anyone would have been able to tell that the models were not identical .. but .. They are such nerdists that it is more important to them than it is to the movie-going audience that they get it right .. AWESOME!!!!
@frankiesomeone
@frankiesomeone 8 лет назад
this is great and all but it's kinda disappointing that such a great artistic effort was just for a forced cameo, which could just as well have been made with CG (i was 100% sure it was CG when i saw the movie) hopefully they get used again and better in the sequels
@bugzkilla
@bugzkilla 8 лет назад
+Francesco Gavardi Probably won't be used again, also there is a specific look to the original stop motion animation that is impossible to replicate in CGI.
@brickman409
@brickman409 8 лет назад
+bugzkilla Have you seen the Lego movie before? It's all CGI but they use techniques like lowering the framerate to make it look like stop motion. I bet they could easily make this in CG and make it look like stop motion. They already have the 3D scans of the original models so all they would have to do is animate them digitally.
@GuyWithAnAmazingHat
@GuyWithAnAmazingHat 8 лет назад
+bugzkilla There is nothing in stop motion that is impossible to replicate in CGI. If the "specific look" you're talking about is the holographic effect, it's just lighting and layers. On the other hand, there are literally countless things in CG that stop motion can't replicate. This is coming from a guy with a degree in animation, majoring in traditional 2D and stop motion.
@bugzkilla
@bugzkilla 8 лет назад
GuyWithAnAmazingHat No that is not what I was referring to. Animating something frame by frame, posing it with your hands and taking a picture does in fact look different than moving a model frame by frame in a digital space. Stop motion looks more "hand made" in comparison to CGI. That is why they went back to how the scene was made in A New Hope so it is doing it justice and actually does in fact look the same.
@GuyWithAnAmazingHat
@GuyWithAnAmazingHat 8 лет назад
bugzkilla The "hand made" effect is in actual fact human error in positioning, dust particles, flickering lighting and other imperfections. All these can be replicated in CGI. And as brickman409 mentioned, the Lego movie actually did a really great job fooling many people into thinking it was actual stop motion.

The armature looks fiddly to make but fairly simple, I say simple because i am a CNC operator programer. What i can not see so well is how they made the balls for the ball joints, Were they ball bearings perhaps, that had beed drilled and threaded. Questions questions, How do you hold and lock down a small ball bearing for drilling and tapping?

also i figured some sort of cad would have been employed for the armiture making since being a virual enviorment they could line up the basic skeletons within the skin models near perfectly. maybe could have helpted get more realistic movement as they could plan out proper muscle groups they could make out f a deformable material that can simulate muscle flexing:D
