I don't think Lancashire captures Julia Child at all. If I didn't know the movie's title, I would not know she is playing Julia Child. The cadence, speed, and delivery is all wrong, as is the light, lilting one-dimensional voice, that constantly just skims the surface. Julia's actual voice was very unique and had many levels, and fluctuated from light to deep with a lot of bottom. Plus, the actress sometimes falls into small, intermittent, undercurrents of a British accent, which Julia most certainly did not have. Additionally, I see absolutely no mannerisms of Julia Child (she had many) in this performance. Meryl Streep was astonishing and brilliant when she played Julia, solidly capturing her voice, personality, and mannerisms. She nailed it! No comparison!

You'll find documentaries on a different channel. I had no idea who Julia Child was and I couldn't care less who she 'really' was. Sarah Lancashire knew nothing of her and is studiously not trying to do an impression. Streep was totally familiar with Child and couldn't help herself but to do an impression. This is a piece of entertainment and I am entertained. This is for a world market. The US is big and has a target market of 200 million people (adults), but the world has billions to target and this piece of tv has been very successful.

Your reply has nothing to do with this discussion and does not offset the very clear and multifaceted evidence I presented when comparing the two performances. Your snarky comment about "documentaries" is uncalled for and does not apply to this discussion. In fact, none of your observations apply to this discussion. If you "had no idea who Julia Child was and couldn't care less"" then you are not qualified to determine which actor gave the most effective performance. Further, no one is talking about "entertainment" or "doing an impression" or the world's "target market." We are talking about the extent and depth to which two actors accurately portray the same biographical subject. Nothing else. And YES, this includes aspects of mannerisms, voice, body language, personality, etc. Maybe we have two very different visions of what a biographical performance should embody. That's fine, so leave it there.

Leave it there? Not today, than you. Who made you RU-vid editor of comments? You don't mean autobiographical , you mean biographical and I disagree with your idea of what this is 100%. And it is clear that the producers agree with me - they cast Sarah Lancashire, they are very pleased with the product and it has been very successful. There would be no second series otherwise. Anyone who actually wants to watch Julia Child can find videos of her online so I suggest you do that to fulfil your wishes. - I've heard she plays herself quite well and might even satisfy your exacting standards. I typed "biographical" in a previous sentence, and typed "autobiographical" afterwards, which was just an error. Thanks for pointing it out and it is now corrected. Now, back to topic: You again remain completely off point. Of course the producers were pleased and of course we can see the real Julia Child in videos. Neither of these comments have anything to do with the topic at hand. Straying off topic like this indicates that you are "floundering" which totally weakens any vague point you are trying to make. Streep did a far more more studied and effective performance than Lancashire for the many solid reasons I outlined in my initial statement. Stay on topic. Provide solid evidence like I did.

Your 'solid evidence' is simply your point of view compared to the facts I produce. I have now watched Julia Child and was bored by her because this is 2024 and her whole schtick was of its time, stilted and colourless - literally and metaphorically. If Sarah had done a 'faithful' impression of Child, it would have been boring also.. Your opinion is your opinion but no-one involved with the show, actors, writers or producers agrees with you and neither do I. I suggest you as a Child superfan save yourself the indigestion and stop watching it.
