Behind the Scenes of Weta Workshop's 'I Am Mother' Robot!

Adam meets the titular character from the new film 'I Am Mother', and surprisingly, this robot is actually an incredible practical costume fabricated by Weta Workshop. Luke Hawker, the lead on the build who also performed as Mother, shows us how this complex suit works and what it takes to transform into a mechanical character.

I could tell the story was lower budget, everything else was fucking awesome and well put together, but I felt like the movie was too short, I wish it would've told how we came extinct, what the "virus" was all about or whatever word they used in the movie, the atmosphere they had was very eerie and there was so much to it but not much explored. I find it interesting how the movie ended on kind of neutral terms, the mother is still alive, the daughter still lives and it was kinda just that, I dont know if the outsider lived or not but I don't recall her screaming indicating she dies so. Everyone pretty much lives.

At the end, I was thinking how great it is that I could not tell what (if anything) was CGI and what was practical. Aliens reference with the laser scanner on her head. Blade Runner reference with the origami. Portal ref with Mother's head. I wonder how many other sci-fi nods are in there?
@robertb1633
@robertb1633 5 лет назад
@@defmech Now I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you - those all may have been intentional (and now that GLaDOS has been brought up, I can't not see it), but this popular concept that because something has appeared in an earlier piece of media and is now appearing again in some new piece of media, that it must be a reference, I feel is damaging to how we appreciate and interpret stories. Take the origami for example. On one hand, I see the obvious similarity to Blade Runner - a piece of origami left in a conspicuous location to signify a deeper meaning. But on the other hand, those meanings were entirely different, and conflating the two can muddy up the intended message. Moreover, in the setting of I Am Mother, the presence of origami is contextually appropriate as a children's craft, its use in the film could have easily originated as a logical output of the setting, and not as a shoe-horned reference. I think this is (at least as a concept) important to acknowledge because the difference between derivation and homage is a slippery slope, both for the creators who make this stuff, and the court of public opinion. Put more simply, as a creator you're just as likely to get torn apart for it as you are to be appreciated for it. And for us as consumers, if it was never intended, then it's at best a distraction from the story you're trying to enjoy. #shower-thoughts-with-rob
@Gunth0r
@Gunth0r 5 лет назад
@@robertb1633 Origami, especially as judged by the pieces shown in the movie, is not a children's craft. Therein might lie the deeper meaning. As in, she's way more patient, intelligent and perceptive than what we would expect from a person that age.

"WoW! Look! Boston dynamics new robot"
@jessiejanson1528
@jessiejanson1528 5 лет назад
I would legit love this, especially if they got boston dynamics to agree to do a PR shoot/prank with them. Show off spot mini, the walking robot, then bring mother out and have it interact with people. Maybe carry a few boxs from one table to another and then have it react to someone dropping the box to make the robot pick it up. except mother refuses and maybe knocks another box off the table then just stares at the person with the eye going smaller and waits for them to pick it up. Could have the robot handler gentle encourage them to pick the boxs up and then when they hand it over to mother, mother just tosses it off to the side then walks back to a dock/chair and sits down. Could have the handler say something like "weird, it only seems to do things like this when its been working for a few hours, i guess we still have a few bugs to work out, might want to give it some time to cool off again." Something to gently disturb those its interacting with. Something to make them say "that seems awfully human" but the handlers just treat it like a machine thats acting up a bit and dont see the human aspect at all, or if the person they have helping brings it up they could respond with "no, you are just imaging it. because it has a human form, people always see human reasons behind its actions". Then could have a handler try to activate it again after its been sitting and then have mother do nothing, just sit there, then one could say "i guess we will just have to shut it down for the day" and then immediately after saying that but before the handler can flip its "off" switch, it just gets up and starts moving boxs again, but in a more annoyed manor, so it picks them up, turns and doesnt place them down gently, but more tosses them a bit to show off a bit of annoyance. Then to really drive it all home, you can have a few handlers look worried and start talking a bit away from it, then the robot just stops, turns its head, eye focuses and just watches. Something the handlers wont notice but the helper would. then when they stop talking and look back over, the robot just goes back to work. If that didnt unsettle the hell out of someone playing the "helper", then they arnt human. You could just have SO much fun with a costume like that since it doesnt appear to contain a human.

spoilers. She was designed to save humanity(?) and while we arnt in her world, the scenes outside showed tons of oil rigs and there were comments like "the air was so bad it was barely breathable before the corn fields just appeared". I think its up to the viewer to decide what it all means, but if mother wasnt the one who poisoned the air, and given the visuals, i think it seems reasonable to assume that the humans were the ones that damage the earth and the air to such and extent where they might be viewed as almost destroying the earth, which would paint mother less as the bad guy if she wiped them out in order to create a new generation of humans raised on the idea of helping society over helping themselves. Mother also apparently genetically engineered the children, so there is no way to really know what was changed. The few humans we see or hear about also seem to really only be out for themselves. when given the option to save a baby, the other human chose to ran to a doomed life with no future rather then staying to fight off mother. There seems to be a clear difference in morals between them and the one that stayed is the one that mother raised. Of course, mother killing children and babies is all vary evil... assuming the stories we heard were true. Its also possible mother could have destroyed plants to make it harder for humans to live but trying to regrow plants and such is no small thing and would require saving massive amounts of them. There is definitely allot to the movie and i would love to see a second movie to continue this one to explore more of their world. I would be interested in one where there are children and teens now, the human mother girl is now in her 30's and one of them looks much like she did(maybe same actress) and there is some sickness affecting the children there and the human mother sends out her daughter to look for the "real" mother out in the world to get her help. Maybe running into some conflict between mother and some group of humans. maybe a last ditch effort to destroy mothers main computer system by a military that had been hiding somewhere. So the daughter is faced with the decision of helping the humans who destroyed the world but at the same time her brothers and sisters would all die, or to work against the humans to save her family, the new generation of humanity.

@@urablahblah Warped ethics. To our perception they may appear warped. To an intelligence whose sole purpose is the survival of the human species despite individual free agency? I LOVE practical effects in movies. I actually remember how sad I was as a kid when I discovered they were doing more and more effects in a computer and not building many of the fantastical creations I saw on screen. I so wanted to work in movies when I knew it was all built but it seemed so much less exciting when it was all just computer graphics. I love seeing this return to actual physical props. It makes for better performances from the actors/actresses and they look more real in the final film.
