The only deal so far as Ukraine is concerned is for Russian to withdraw completely from all occupied parts of Ukraine, including Crimea, and to pay reparations to enable Ukraine infrastructure to be rebuilt. Russia has significantly degraded its economy. It has shown that its milirary might has been corrupted and that it is not the military power it once was a. Russia has had almost three million of its young poeple leave the country because of the war with Ukraine. Russia has albut lost the ability to run and maintain its infrastructure, because it shut down technical education in the nineteen eighties. And after this crippling war it inflicted on Ukraine, it can not gain any traction there. The desperation of Russia to end this humiliating war is only outshone by its arrogance to dictate terms of settlement and cease fire. If Ukraine simply continues as it has, Russia will collapse and fragment as a country. The Russian people are now set on a course of poverty and degradation for decades to come. Putin's arrogance and incompetence is biblical in its proportions. This madness can only come to a close if Putin and his cronies are out of office. The means of that change is less important than its expediency. Putin clearly does not care how many people on either side must die or be maimed in order to keep him in power. He is worse than the Monty Python 'brave' knight ! People need to understand the staggering lunacy of this situation that {otin alone has made. Yes Putin wears a suit, but by any other metric, he is clearly insane.

Having a woman suggest holding onto territories could be signal that position is not smart or strong. Woman are not highly regarded in regard to military or strategic issues in Russia. Therefore a woman suggesting territories should not be returned, and claiming so because the new territories now are ingraved in the constitution, could make it easier for male leaders to choose the opposite view, and harder for others to oppose them. Very few statements are made publically in Russia without the top political leadership either having okayed it, or orchestrated it. Political debates in Russia are more indications or testing ground for what the leadership is planning, than actual debates.

It could also be an indication the Kremlin is fearing Kamala Harris could become the next U.S. president. That is their ultimate nightmare. A female president in their largest rival country. Should that happen Russia is likely to minimalize it's potential to lose face to the U.S. Therefore by ending the war in Ukraine themselves, they would not have lost face by losing to a woman. Remember the Ukranian war is sold in Russia as the U.S. and NATO using Ukraine as a proxy to attack Russia. Totalt BS, off course, Russia wanted to prevent Ukraine becoming a democracy with membership in The EU and NATO for two reasons. 1) Russia feared a free and democratic Ukraine who through EU membership had economic growth could inspire the Russian people to desire the same and rebel against the Russian leadership. 2) Russia feared the strength of NATO, should one of Europe's largests countries bordering Russia become a member. Those are the rational reasons. An irrational 3rd. reason is Putin's desire to reverse the break up of the Soviet Union of the 1990s so his name will stand out in the history books. But losing to a woman, in Russian eyes, will make Kremlin appear weak, and that would threaten them internally more than anything. So the stronger support Kamala Harris have in the U.S, the more interested Kremlin could be of getting the war in Ukraine ended themselves, the sanctions lifted and life returned more to how it was before, rather than continue to fight with Ukraine without success in a conflict they have painted to the Russian people as a U.S. and NATO orchestrated war, and therefore, should the next U.S. president be Kamala Harris, it would be a woman they appeared to be losing against if they didn't succeed taking Ukraine. It is also possible the Kremlin has realized the war in Ukraine to not be possible to fully win, and therefore the best way of reaching their main objektive, preventing Ukraine from becoming a NATO country, would be through negotiations. If so, they could be calculating Ukraine might agree to remain a neutral country, provided they got back all of their territory and was allowed to join the EU. Should Kamala Harris win, the U.S, the EU and other Western countries continue their support for Ukraine and beefing up their military production as planned, it will be increasingly difficult and costly for Russia to continue the war in, and occupation of, Ukraine and Ukranian territories. Through negotiations to prevent Ukraine to become a NATO coyntry, could be the only way to achieve something with the appearance of being a result Russia could paint as a victory. Therefore getting those negotiations started and finished quickly, could be the smartest move Russia could make, instead of waiting to a point in time where they risked Ukraine favoured their military chances more.

Ukraine as of this moment has entered Russia itself and Russia is on the back foot a bit losing a battalion of men a day and proving to the world they are not a very good military after all. If this war continues the question of whether or not Russia will give back the territory may be mute if Russia continues to lose ground it may end up without control of any Ukrainian territory before too long. It is hard to describe how low Russia has brought its perceived power in the world with this conflict. We all used to think it was a major power with one of the best militaries in the world and now we all know it was just an off kilter house of cards only really supported by nuclear weapons. Now we all know their equipment is mostly antiquated by NATO standards, their tactics are medieval and delusional(because they implement plans without regards for the needed supplies and equipment), the soldiers are lacking in training, the officers are incompetent liars that have stolen what was needed to fight a war and leadership gives orders rooted in dreams and fantasy rather than facts and real intelligence(then they leave the soldiers to make the fantasy real with none of the equipment needed). If you had told me this would happen three years ago I would have sworn it was impossible for a nation to so rapidly and publicly be stripped naked and humiliated. The worry is for the future because a Russia this humiliated opens for so many problematic scenarios to come to fruition. In what stupid ways will Russia try to regain some standing as military force of any consequence in the future? Will the jingoistic need to strike out to assert dominance win or will cooler heads prevail with a Russia looking inward to solve their homegrown issues. Sadly I have little hope for the latter as dealing realistically with internal issues have not been the historic course of action for Russia.

I cannot see how Russia can concede any territory, too many soldiers have been lost in fighting this war. I suspect the war has reached a stalemate and each side is trying to find a deal that will be acceptable to public opinion. The problem is if both sides reach an agreement, it will only be a truce which might lead to a suspension of hostilities and a negotiated settlement that might drag on for years. In fact, this might be the preferred option as Kyiv and Moscow might find it hard under their present leaders to secure a peace deal without being accused by the extreme Nationalists of betrayal. As for an end to the war by the end of 2024, there is no way this will be achievable unless Trump is elected President and ceases aid to Ukraine which I suspect was one of the reasons the Russians are pursuing other avenues, as they had banked on him being President come January 2025.

I can’t see Putin agreeing to any ceasefire deal that involves Russia ceding any territory under Russian control. At the moment, he’s pushing for a deal that involves Ukraine ceding territory that Russia hasn’t occupied yet. I think the most Putin would be willing to accept is a freezing of the front line with only very minor adjustments, and an armistice rather than a peace. This was how the Korean War ended in 1953.

This is quite likely that these "questions" are asked in Moscow and very much more until US elections. The situation today is Putin's ally Trump is less likely to be elected so the prospect of a failing military aid to Ukraine is getting smaller. We also have been talking for over a year about the arrival of F16 in Ukraine, some have arrived, more are coming AND the US has agreed to have them fitted with "modern" missiles. The other side is Russian economy is "suffering", reduced aging workforce, ressources taken away to help the military industrial complex. So, sooner or later, many will ask is the war in Ukraine worth destroying Russia (now a pariah state, no more investment, industrial attacks on Russian oil industry, China taking the upper hand in far-east Russia and Russian minorities (eastern republics) accepting less and less the Russian oppressor. Russian decision-makers will also ask can we win against all forces of Europe and America PLUS some far east countries.

Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany allied in 1939 with the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact (otherwise known as the Nazi-Soviet Pact or the Hitler-Stalin Pact), they openly agreed not to invade each other, and not to help any countries that invaded each other, and secretly agreed to divide up Poland and stay out of each other's way when both countries invade their neighbours. This Pact was one of the most significant elements of Hitler's early gains, as it meant Germany only had to fight a one-front war. Ukraine was _invaded and occupied_ by Germany, just like Holland and France - but we don't say 'Holland and France fought for the Nazis'.
