A young woman's torturous battle to get to work. Behind the scenes - • Shooting a Film START ... Written & Directed by Darious Britt Starring Gabi Urias Behind the Scenes coming soon
Everyone involved made this film look effortlessly staged. Says a lot about how talented everyone is. The actress oozes confidence and pure joy being in front of the camera, even if the bts’s were (if they were) stressful. Cinematography is A list material. I’m new at your channel and will now become more glued to your content. I feel like you have just scratched the surface of the enormous talent in you. Your editing skills added a sense of depth, urgency, and calm within a building mood of unstoppable anxiety. And then you, the actress, and Darious nailed it at the end. Am learning a lot from all of you. One thought: at 4:13 - the music was somber yet brought out the mood beautifully. The sudden end of the car scene transitions the actress to her office. I watched these two last scenes and transition a number of times. My thought is, had you added a more dramatic soundtrack at 4:13 - with percussions- it may have given the car scene a higher climactic peak-which in turn may have made the office sequence a greater surprise to the audience. Just my unprofessional approach and opinion. I have yet to film anything, however, that will change soon. In the meantime, I’m learning from what I watch and listen to. If my input is not agreeable, please let me know. I’m obviously in need of as much advice as possible. Thank you.
So upset I didn’t see it when this dropped. But glad to have caught it overall! AMAZING! I loved the 4:3 ratio. It made me feel boxed into our main character and I could feel the suppression that she has inside of her own self. Depression is real and this FELT REAL. The way our main character was out of focus was such a great narrative choice. I thought of it as it’s what she felt inside of herself. Awesome! I aspire to do what you do!
So relatable Darious. Thank you for this. Someone captured the daily struggle for so many of us, just to get out of bed and face the world with that fake smile. Am I OK? No, but I won't tell you that.
I see Darius is trying to breath fresh air into the formula of "alarm clock + bed". The actress is amazing and gorgeous, the editing and sound is on point, color grading is solid. This indeed feels like a graduation short but with more self-awareness on the tropes.
Great work as always Darious and a big shoutout to Gabi! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. You both captured the feeling perfectly and brought humanity to something many of us struggle with. That struggle can feel so lonely. Thank you for what you both brought to this project.
welcome back darious!! i love your stuff, you always inspire me. i love your "art is subjective" approach to filmmaking. it's because of you that i've started my journey of learning the rules so i can break them how i'd like, and making art that's true to me. I'M SO HAPPY YOU'RE BACK POSTING!!! i'll eat up anything you upload! now about the film, i think before i started watching your channel i might not have understood all the symbolism and artistry that went into this. but i LOVED how you managed to achieve the "isolated" feeling with your shots. i think all of us have experienced feeling disconnected from the rest of the world at some point, and i feel like everything, even down the very neutral-cold color grade and subtle halation, communicate that feeling super well. the beads and the shot around 3:53 really made it feel like she was trapped behind bars. i loved it!! thank you for teaching me the basics of film and the importance of conveying your art how you want!
This was great, I love that the ending felt like a beginning of a more common short or tv episode. Like this story really was the behind the scenes of a difficult morning
I like how you conveyed your perspective with this work of filmmaking art. It does have that two minute teaser vibe for a series pilot. Now that you brought your pov up, the second after her last line, a sequence of panic stricken coworkers surrounding her desk yelling at one another about a project deadline nearing soon.
I like how experimental this short film was. That she was out of focus when she said she didn't feel like she mattered and that ties into reminding herself to focus because she has a hard time doing that. Never really saw an overexposed shot used on purpose but that could also be used to signify her being overwhelmed. Thought the cinematography was beautiful on this one and how natural light was used too. Great work.
Je vais te l'ecrire dans ma langue pour que tu comprennes que ton art va bien au-delà de tes frontières ! Un travail incroyable et vraiment inspirant ! Toutes mes félicitations de Bruxelles, Belgique !
So when's the horror/thriller full feature coming? This was basically a horror short film about getting out of bed/morning routine and it's amazing. You're a master behind the camera. What's next?
the colors, or lack there of, is such an amazing directions choice and the few scenes where small pints of color do pop up it just makes me go crazy. Colors are my thing in film making and it breaks my heart to see so many short films go from ALRIGHT to meh... because they didn't color grade it the right way. This is frickin' sweet D. #booyahkashakasha
Excellent film. Especially love that you practice what you preach and deliver on the promise of learning the techniques you teach in your Patreon. It's like seeing all those techniques painted on the screen by a master.
You have become a master at channeling mental states onto a visual medium, In my opinion this is the most powerful film you've don yet def up there with unsound.
I have depression. This film is an accurate depiction of my life. Mornings are the worst. I might send this video to my Dad. Thanks for this short film.
Wow! Really well done! You can really feel the isolation, despair and struggle. Great sound design, too. I watched the first part of the BTS before I watched it, and it's remarkable what you accomplished in such a small place. Bravo!
Captured the feeling perfectly! I'm learning a lot from your work. I recently started making short films myself. Your films are a captivating inspiration.
Man, this is nicely shot, some nice nuance to it. From a story level perspective, I really liked the detailed struggle to get out of bed, but that's as far as it escalates, and in my opinion it's not enough to really let us experience just how much a struggle it is and why. Show me why and how her job is so awful and terrible that makes getting up such a struggle. Without that, it's a meaningless struggles to go to work. Going back to unsound, what was great about that, REALLY REALLY great about that film, Darious, is it escalates big and it does it early on, although it does tread water for a while it did have the threat of his mother disowning him, one of the worst things for a son who loves his mother. That, that was tortuous, this isn't quite there in that respect. The ending doesn't feel earned either, because based on her internal feelings (she feels like a ghost at work) we don't see the absolute worst happen to her and see her fail or overcome it. That's why (and this is just an example, not trying to compare) the ending of succession is so compelling, the characters have the absolute worst happen to them based on what matters the most to them. I liked the detail of her feeling like she wouldn't be noticed if she wasn't at work, that has great potential for a scene to show why work is such a struggle. Still nice though.
This is a visual treat! I mean, the whole film is great, don't get me wrong. Love the VO, the edit is crisp, and the pacing is FIRE. But the visual storytelling got me more than anything else. I think it would even work without VO. Letting the visuals tell the story, how she feels inside.
Hey I’m a really big fan of your work and videos and I just got to this. This one was really good and a huge step up in my opinion. I really hope you make more videos and continue making movies.
Wow, Darious is just getting better and better all the time. This is some professional level cinematography. Every single choice in all areas of crafting a movie directed towards telling a meaningfull story in the most effective and profound way possible. Truly great short film letting you see battles fought by many everyday that are othervise invisible. I really hopes he makes another feature film soon.
