There are dozens of demovideos around of both. But you are actually one of the very first to really take the Poly-D and the 2600 as what it is, a new synth without testing all the time how well the originals have been cloned. I own the Poly-D for a couple of months but instantly you've made some sounds I've never came across yet and chaining both together at the end was the idea, you've done some great performance there.

Thank you for this interesting demonstration. As a non-Synth User I now have a much clearer idea of the purposes of this devices and you are right: compared to the price it seems that those Behringer tools are just the best price/performance options and, i have already a keyboard, the 2600 wouldn't hurt too much if I would get such a module for experimenting and so on. Thank you.

Being a big fan of the Mini, I'd probably want to own one of those first, I hadn't realized until this video how much Juno potential there truly is. Paraphonic architectures are quite cool, imo. But the low end, and semi-modular patching possibilities on the 2600 are insane, aside from the fact that that semi-modularity can be utilized with the external input.

If you were to create a eurorack set up to emulate the 2600, it would cost you a significant amount of money. For under £600 is a no brainer. Like the Neutron.

This. I ordered the 2600 as a first stepping stone into modular hardware. It seems like an amazing platform to start with, and what you get for the money is just astonishing. Now, who knows what the MTBF will be on these things, but still. I'm hella excited.

If you don't need the tactile hardware knob-twiddling you can do it for free on your computer, using VCV Rack. It's a free software Eurorack with emulations of many of the available hardware modules. There's even an ARP Odyssey module called STS Oddy.

@Rhizosphere Play with the saturation and patching for different filter types to distinguish the 2600. It is a 70’s design, like the Moog, so it will have some of the woofiness as opposed to the angularity of the Pro-1, fir example.

Apples and Oranges? Yeah, exactly. The 2600 is for people who want to design sounds and add a sequencer to it, or even multiple sequencer and a keybed. The Model D is more of an instrument for bass or a synth meldoy.

Got the Poly D when it came out and it was everything i was hoping it to be. Originally i wanted to get a Model-D expander since it was dirt cheap but i was holding back a little and hoping Behringer would release a revision with Keys. And sure enough they DID. Wasn't disappointed. Build-quality is great, sound is AWESOME and it is quite a heavy instrument too. No plasticbomber like the stuff Roland spews out. The keys play fantastic and the additional 4th oscillator is a godsent. I don't really use the paraphonic mode though and often pretend it doesn't exist because i love playing it like a real original MiniMoog Model D. The Sequencer however is still a little enigmatic to me and i really need to always look up tutorials on how to use it. Personally i find the Sequencer of the Korg Minologue a lot easier to handle and fun to play. I am still unsure if i should get the Behringer 2600 too because frankly.. it doesn't really offer anything i need and which i don't already have. But who knows....

Other non- sound related considerations for me are, I will generally always take a synth with a keyboard over one without, and I love a nice wood and metal case. Two downsides of sliders is that they can be finicky to get to stop at a sweet spot, and those grooves are real dust collectors. Also the layout of the 2600 is a real head scratcher for anyone who grew up with the standard layout. And lastly, I could do without sequencers and digital effects on vintage analog synth recreations as well. Glad they didn't add memory storage for presets at least though.

@D T Day No Minimoog sounds identical because of all the fluctuations of the internal components. You can own several Minimoons from the entire 10 year production range (and even the recent new productions) and they will basically all sound different one way or another. This is why it is so hard to really nail down THE sound of a Minimoog Model D. You can always only get it roughly done. Depending on which model you owned for a whole, your ears will always use THAT model as a sound reference.

Edit/Update: Damn your eyes, Duxbury, I've just preordered a Blue Marvin and the responsibility for this stupid financial conduct rests squarely on your shoulders! Holy crap, that jam at the end! 😲 Got a Poly D already, but will definitely be adding a BARP 2600 to the mix. First I've heard of the limited edition with the spring reverb... I'm a sucker for that stuff. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!! I honestly can't get myself readjusted quickly enough to the transformation Behringer have gone through. You are going to grow into the 2600 via experiments with those little cables, grasshopper. I wish these remakes would be 100% compatible with modern modular control voltages. Behringer and Korg missed an opportunity there. I see myself also affording a special utility or two to switch from modern modular 0-10V to remake +/-10V to control.
@geerhoar
@geerhoar 2 года назад
The 2600 is pretty much Eurorack compatible. There are three outputs at +14V that will need attenuation, and when you are gating both envelopes through the S&H input on the AR envelope section, the threshold increases to +6V (gating them separately is +5 and +4V inputs).

lol you've got a bit of VCO2 FM (rightmost green slider in filter section) going on when you're sweeping the 2600 filter, you can see the slider's up a little bit. Noticed it didn't sound like my 2600 right in front of me, had to look close, now I can replicate it. Also, using three oscillators maxed out on the 2600 produces some distortion, the intermodulation gets more obvious when you tune the oscillators some interval apart. Keep them around 75% if you want to avoid that. Of course both these things are musical, but just want everyone to be aware :)

I would be careful also with biased opinions. I have seen people who also pretend to be unbiased but they are because I have found some even lying about the equipment they had. Behringer causes bias because they sell cheap products and some people have criticized the company a lot (they say nothing when it is about expensive replicas from other brands). All reviews I have read/see say this thing is well built. Only the keys are not the best but nothing different than what Korg is doing with Prologue or Nautilus 61. Check some forums as well.

ARP had two filter types because they copied Moog's patented ladder filter design. Moog caught them and they agreed to change it. Unfortunately, the new filter was nowhere near as good. So it's great that you have both, but the earlier Moog-like design is the one to use. Lots of people used the 2600 for performance, like Edgar Winter and Joe Zawinul. But it can be awkward to use on stage with all of the patch cables. It's really better as a studio instrument. The Poly-D lacks some of the ARP's modules (like reverb and sample and Hold) and the patch points. But it's much more intuitive and easier to use live on stage. If you're looking for maximum versatility and don't mind the complexity of the ARP, than you will probably like it. If you want a fat stage instrument that does 90% of what the ARP does, than the Poly-D is a great choice.

Good they should not be allowed to just steal other tech

@@HiLoMusic I should clarify that it was ARP that did the infringing and not Behrenger, who are using available tech now to build all of their synths.

@@Dudderlyful Actually, in this case it was a patent. US patents expire 20 years from filing or 17 years from grant (whichever is greater). So the Moog patent is long-expired and free to use by anyone. Copyrights last for life of the author or 100 years, so you need to be careful about those.

I came here to check the Arp 2600 but that PolyD maybe will come along for the ride too. Even though I said NO MORE MONO SYNHTS... but I mean, that Arp 2600 is a must, and that PolyD.... too! at least I am keeping my word with the PolyD, that´s not a Mono synth.

Yeah, can't be doing Behringer stuff... #swing. I have, however, ordered a KORG 2600M though (from Andertons as it happens). Also, Korg supports the Alan R. Pearlman Foundation.

Was that opening solo from Frank Zappa. I swear I recognize it but not sure where. Also, the way I have heard these two synths described is that with the Minimoogs, the synth will naturally guide you to new sounds, whereas with a 2600 you'll have a sound in your mind and the synth *will* be able to repliclate it. You need a bit of planning with the 2600, but its possibilities are infinite. Whilst a Minimoog might be a bit more limited but its an excellent synth for just exploring and tweaking to see what happens.

Don’t forget to order patch cables with your 2600 (it doesn’t come with any); colors are a good thing. No MIDI cables either. The power adapter looks like a weak link. I have a Blue Marvin , with the Spring Reverb. Unless you’re old (like me), you’ll be satisfied with the standard 2600’s “quieter” Digital Reverb.

@David Ryan Funny. In the 80's we couldn't wait to get our hands on a real sounding piano! It's gone the other way entirely. I started in 1986 with a portable Yamaha FM keyboard. Had tons of digital and analogue synths. I could never afford a Moog Mini so, the Poly D is just a blessing. A synth rabbit hole if you will.

My only tip for demoing the gear is don't assume that everybody wants ballsy synths. The sounds with all those oscillators firing will kill a music composition completely. It's the subtlety of tone from analog synths that are good. Particularly in the higher freqs with ring mod and other added waves it sounds much better than VA. If you want to hear the arp2600 sing with beautiful tones. Use the sine wave as bass underlying tone. Make use of the ring mod at the vca as this can bypass the filter. Use filter resonance to create overtones. Play around with the osc freqs. The secret of the arp2600 is the ability to bypass the filter with what you want direct.
