Behringer 2600 - Quick Tips Tutorial 5: Dynamic Envelope and another VCA

Hello to another "quick tip" (this slowly becomes a running gag) which is a bit longer than quick. This time again i`m talking to myself about the ring modulator, the sample and hold and a special behaviour of the AR envelope. Long, sometimes confused (with a lot of "eemm"s) and maybe a little boring. I warned you.
Like it or not, but in any case: Happy patching!

Another great tuto Mr t.noise ! Using modules for what they aren't made for. A ring modulator become a VCA, a flip-flop become a "bit crusher" etc ... That's the pleasure with modular system !

Like the ringmod gate trick for accents. It's obvious once you understand it (simple math right) and can obviously be pretty handy.

Nicely explained. You show a lot of the different things that can be done with this lovely machine (have one myself). Not all patches are perhaps that interesting soundwise, but still it gives you information and inspiration of what is possible to do. Good job!

Cheers and thanks your your comment! Glad if it helps. For the patches: Fair point - but it's more of a technical approach with these videos and i am trying to keep it simple .

Enjoying your newly discovered videos, subscribed! I suppose this means you can use the AR envelope as a kind of a delay, depending on how it’s patched. Going to experiment with this tonight. Great explanations of all these functions, providing pathways for new ideas. Cheers! 👍

Thanks for sharing. I have a question... I connected my headphones output jack on the Behringer 2600 and the headphones outputs from my Behringer RD 8, RD 9, as well as my TD 3 to the seperate inputs on my Erica Synths Techno System 2 mixer inputs. Then I noticed that my 2600 was not heard. I only could hear all outputs from my others. I experimented with the 2600 and checked out that my headphone volume was fully up to the highest level. I then checked the VCA Slider all the way to the right on the 2600 and that was all the way up. I decided to turn up the VCF Slider on the left of the VCA and finally could hear the 2600 but the Envelope AR or ADSR envelope was now not working. I should also mention that I have my 2600 connected to the Behringer 960 sequencer. The sequencer is synced to the trigger out Accent on my RD 8's rear. The step sequencer of the RD 8 moves each step forward in perfect sync. I have the 960 out going into the Voltage input of the 2600 and output of Voltage on 2600 going into the AR Envelope in order to trigger notes correctly. Why do I only get sound out of the headphone jacks output when either the initial gain next to the 2600 is all the way raised or it's all the way down and then I only get output sound if the VCF slider is all the way up. Again that's a steady output even when all my gear synced up is stopped with no trigger from the sequencer. I like your advice on how I can resolve this. Thank you in advance, Sincerely, Michael

@@michaeldulsky8492 hi Michael, thanks for your message. The 2600 signal routing can be confusing. Did you see this video? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H4M6SwtZykk.htmlsi=UaS_Zv3USDvoTMDm

Thank you for the video! Really shows me how little I know about modular/semi modular synthesis routing. Any plans on expanding on the quantizer unit with the 2600?

Thanks Christian. Have no plans about this topic but this makes me think that i might make a video about some applications with Eurorack gear.

Hi your videos are so intuitive thanks for the inspiration my question, I’ve thinking of adding the korg sq80 is as powerful as they say? Is it like the Roland MC-4 lots programming imputing lots of numbers? What’s yer take on the sq80?
@tomnoise23
@tomnoise23 2 года назад
Hi, sorry, not sure if i got the question right - I didn't find a Korg SQ 80- Are you referring to a Korg SQ 64? In general, i can't really recommend a sequencer as it much depends on the purpose. But a few thoughts: For pure experimenting and sound design i much prefer a simple unit like the SQ1. For a more advanced approach there are pretty good eurorack sequencers around like for instance an Intellijel Metropolis. If you want to arrange a whole song, without a computer and a DAW, then maybe an Arturia beatstep or Keystep pro would be nice, or the Korg SQ64. You`ll loose a lot of hands on controls (aka knob per function) on the latter ones and they will involve a some "shift + click" functions. So it depends on your personal preferences and workflow.

These videos are perfectly suitable ,,talking with no audio from the synth, audio from the synth that doesen't drown out the speech and a steady pace and a clearly competent presentation. More please. They are much more informative than voiceless demoes that omit the fact that there are a multitude of additional devices in use that leave the listener as clueless as when they start the video. A question.. I read somewhere online that this synth puts out 14 voltsin some places ,,too high for eurorack inputs. Is this correct please??? Can I use my massive collection of eurorack gear INTO this synths for additional external modulation.... Thanks for yr swift reply
@tomnoise23
@tomnoise23 3 года назад
Hello John. Thanks for your feedback. I am glad that you like my content. As for Eurorack compability: The Original ARP 2600 needed 14V as Gate/Trigger voltage in some places. The Behringer works with much lower gate levels, as my videos demonstrate. Also the output voltages are all in a normal range. And in case that a signal may be too high, you can attenuate it with the Voltage Processor or one of the output attenuator faders that sit before the mixer. I am using the unit here together with some modular eurorack gear without any problems, it's all compatible. The only thing is that some concepts that the 2600 uses appear to be weird or not so practical these days. For instance you can't clock the switch from the outside, the trigger requirements for the envelopes are a little quirky and so on. But that's part of the history of the 2600.

Excellent! Thank you. I was looking to see how to make dynamic sequences so your video is exactly what I was looking for. I'd thought about, but not tried, using stacking cable into the AR in socket to combine outputs from a cv source for velocity and the AR envelope. Would you think that this would work to create a dynamic sequence? :-)
@tomnoise23
@tomnoise23 Год назад
Hi, thanks for your comment! The AR Envelope is in fact a slew processor with adjustable rise and fall times (much like a function generator on maths minus the cycling). So whatever voltage you put in, will be available at the output. I think it's better to vary the input voltage of the AR, not the output. For instance, use the voltage processor to mix gate and velocity cv and use the result as voltage for the AR Gate.
@tomnoise23
@tomnoise23 Год назад
Oh wait, i just realized that a velocity voltage is always "on", unlike a gate. So you better use the ringmod (or a VCA from elsewhere) in DC mode to multiply the two voltages. Otherwise the VCA will stay open at the last played value.

@@tomnoise23 I tried your volume patching last night and it works very well thank you. My volume idea didn't work at all. I also tried to make the B2600 "talk" (as above) but couldn't make it work. Patching the sample and hold out into the vca (filter input?) stopped all sounds coming from the synth (maybe some clicks only). Patching the sample and hold out into one of the filter cv inputs worked, although maybe not in the same way as your video?
@tomnoise23
@tomnoise23 Год назад
For that sound i was patching the output of the VCF to the S/H input which is labeled "noise gen" - then synced the S/H (EXT CLK IN) to a very high frequency of a VCO Square wave that wasn't used for making sound. Then i patched the S/H output to the audio input of the VCA.

Maybe a stupid question, but is it possible with the BARP to create a random envelope with the ADSR section? If you run a sequence and on some steps for example, the attack is short and the next step long? Or is that only possible with an Eurorack type EG with seperate CV Ins for ADSR?

Hi and thanks! this question is a tough one. Maybe it‘s possible to fake something like this on the 2600 but on first thought i would say it’s not. Need to think about it a bit more 😊
