I already had a ride set up to return my Arp 2600 m tomorrow because I thought it was broken with the droning note. Last minute just looked up some videos on RU-vid and can't thank you enough for this video and for explaining that it's a common mistake by new users. I loved the sound and really didn't want to return it and after this video it's a lot easier to understand how this synth works.
Thanks you for your feedback! I am glad that I was able to clarify things! There are some more 2600 pitfalls, you may want to watch this video here as well ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vQx88p4dutc.html
Thank you very much for the instructional videos on the classic 2600. I'm just a home hobbyist who loves synths. You gave me the courage to get one of the clones after watching your beginner videos a couple of times, and they are all guiding my first steps. This is my first "big boy" synth! You're a good teacher! Thanks!
Thank you so much for your wonderful support! I am so glad that my tutorials encouraged you to get a 2600 Synth for yourself. I am sure the 2600 will stay with you for your entire creative journey :-) Again many thanks for your support and happy patching! Cheers, Ralph
I remember the 2600 arrived here in the Odenwald, and the first hassle was the vca! I could not solve the problem within 1 hour and needed help from an internet forum where I got help 😂🤣🤙🤟thats funny, today I can laugh about it. The 2600 is phantastic! Thx for explanation! Well done as always!
Thank you, Ralph for this clear and concise tutorial. Helped me get started into the world of the 2600 and I can't wait to explore more of this absolute monster!
I've just bought my very first clone 2600 after seeing Ryuichi Sakamoto's ARP2600 on the web ! Now with you, my real teacher I begin to learn seriously synth, thank you ! HAT OFF RALPH
THANK YOU RAPLH! I bought a Behringer 2600 this week, and your video is AWESOME! So clear, so well presented, and (unlike many others) so well made visually - everything is totally visible and I can pause and check all the patch settings if I need to. It has answered so many questions for me already, and I'm just about to dive into the other episodes. Well done, sir!
Thank you so much Ralph for this and all your tutorials. With your help I have gone from not being able to get a single sound out of my newly acquired Blue Marvin to making some great patches and now realising what a great synthesiser it is. You are my hero!
Hello Richard, thanks for your feedback! I am glad that my tutorials are helping new users to make the first steps with the 2600. Happy patching, Ralph
An easy thing to miss: If you're like me and start out using ADSR rather than AR as primary VCA control... It's worth noting that the slider is exponential. Having the slider in around 90% will yield a very weak signal. It's easy to miss the "EXP'L" label and waste time trying to troubleshoot weak output line levels!
Thanks for pointing this out! I have already made a tutorial regarding this "issue". Viewers who want to learn about this subject can watch the tutorial here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9luimTNk8mo.html
Your tutorials are very concise. You know what you are talking about with the experience behind it. I find your passion for teaching invaluable. The very best. Thank you Ralph.
Your appreciation means a lot to me. I'm grateful for your support and that you like my style of teaching. Thanks again for all your support! Cheers, Ralph
Just want to give you a heartfelt thank you for this beginner series. I just bought a Behringer 2600. Without a doubt, you have saved me much time, frustration… and panic! LOL. Thanks again.
Thank you for your feedback! I am glad that my videos helped you to get started with the 2600 Synth. Wishing you happy patching and a good time. Greetings, Ralph
I just got my Behringer 2600 this week and thanks to your tutorials I was doing all sorts of crazy stuff with it in no time. Very well explained, comprehensive and detailed, nicely delivered. Thank you so much. You rock!
Thank you for your kind feedback 🙏 I am glad that my videos are helping you to get up and running with the 2600 Synth. Have fun patching and exploring! Cheers, Ralph
I’m going to be getting one of these 2600s for Christmas and this video has made such a daunting synthesizer so much easier to understand. Thank you very much!
Very clear and simple instruction. I was just about ready to stop making music and sale this thing and start smoking Crack. This video might have saved my life. Thank you !!!
Thank you for your support and feedback! It means a lot to me that my tutorials have been valuable in getting you acquainted with your Grey Meanie. Wishing you many enjoyable music sessions! Cheers, Ralph
Thanks for stopping by. So far many people have told me that my tutorial has helped them to get started with the 2600 Synth. Therefore I trust that you will learn something from my video too. Cheers, Ralph
Thank you for your 2600 tutorials, Ralph! I'm finally able to own one and just posted my first exploration with my B-2600 Blue Marvin on my channel. Your tutorials are incredibly helpful to get started. Even if you have experience with hardware synthesizers, the 2600 is a different beast all together. Your video saved me a lot of hours of frustration.
@@RalphBaumgartl Speaking of patching. I wonder if you might consider doing a different type of sound effect 'how-to' from Star Wars. I think most have seen R2-D2, but could you try a tutorial on a ship engine sound like the higher to lower slow attack of a ship arriving out of hyperspace? Just an idea!
I was 20 in August 2000 when I bought my first ARP synthesizer, an Axxe Mk II. One of the things I stumbled onto was that initial gain control bypassing the VCA level. It was a little adventure unto itself, and I tried harnessing it on one or two occasions. Two months later when I read the Mark Vail book Vintage Synthesizers, the article about the 2600 (written ironically by Dr. Robert Moog) included a reference to Josef Zawinul having purchased his first 2600 and informed the ARP staff that the sound was incredible though he couldn’t get it to stop. I subsequently learned that feature is meant to facilitate external audio signals passing through the filter section. Incredible all the things that somebody can do with this module, simply playing it as a performance synthesizer like the Minimoog or Odyssey, without even touching the patchbay. I can just imagine that if this model were on the market when I was the same age as when I bought the aforementioned Axxe, I would’ve chosen this instead. Some have said it doesn’t have the characteristics of the original ARP line, but I beg to differ. Haven’t bought one yet (as of December 2022), but I might.
Thanks for sharing this. I wasn't aware that even Joe Zawinul had trouble figuring out the "Initial Gain" thing. As an owner of an original ARP 2600, I can confirm that the B2600 is a pretty decent 2600 clone. Greetings, Ralph
Many thanks, Ralph. That first ARP synthesizer of mine is on the first three cuts on my self-titled debut record, *Eric Benjamin Gordon.* The seven offerings I have made available online since feature its successor, a Korg-manufactured Odyssey.
Thank you so much Ralph, I might have gone a bit mad without your help on here, I am now enjoying the Blue Marvin in conjunction with your fantastic videos, , there is something so tactile about the ARP 2600 that makes exploration so appealing. I owe you a pint!
I play modular synth for a while and 2600 gave me a hard time figuring out how it behve, especially the envelopes and vca section. This synth is very special and it's why it's so interesting. Thanks for the tutorial.
Already arrived, and what amazing synth ! And go on with this amazing videos about this 2600 synth by beringher! I learn a lot with your videos about this synth . Thank You 🙏
Fantastic. I just hooked up my new 2600 and literally had no idea what I was doing. I now have a basic understanding of how it operates. Much to learn yet I'm sure but this at least makes me feel like learning this synth is manageable!
Hello there, so glad to know that my video helped to get up and running with the 2600 Synth. Make sure that you also watch this video here. It clarifies some pitfalls that newbies usually encounter on their 2600 Synth journey. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vQx88p4dutc.html
Thanks for your feedback! Good to know that some of my viewers are using my content as an online manual for the 2600 Synth. Have a creative weekend, Ralph
@@RalphBaumgartl thanks Ralph! That's very kind of you, I had subbed before I originally commented but I'll be paying attention to your videos and appreciate what you're doing on RU-vid .
As a big fan of Ralph I watched this video as I was waiting for my wife to get ready to go out for dinner. Ive seen it several times and... again i pick up another useful tid bit i missed previously. Hello Bill, thank you very much for giving me this feedback! This is exactly what I am trying to achieve with my tutorials. Thanks again and happy patching 😃 Greetings, Ralph
Hallo Jürgen, das freut mich, dass Dir mein Video bei deinem Einstieg zur Seite steht. Ich wünsche dir viel Spaß mit deinem B2600! Mit bestem Gruß, Ralph
Ralph, thank you so much for this video. I can clearly see it is deeply out of your own experience of helping other 2600 beginners. I had thought that I was well versed in synths in general before I received 2600. You video helped me a lot! The manual that came with it was like a joke to me. :(
Большое спасибо за урок! Behringer 2600 со мной уже неделю и это потрясающая штука. Твой урок помог мне разобраться с базовыми функциями. До этого я просто рандомно двигал ручки и искал звуки. 🙏🏻😁
Thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot to me to know that my tutorials had an impact on your decision. Greetings all the way to Argentina! Greetings, Ralph
Glad I was able to help! Have a great time on your 2600 Synth journey! Cheers, Ralph

Thanks a lot. Will be very helpful when I receive my 2600. Mine is on back-order from November 2020. So, I think, the first step to start is to try to get a 2600. It may be the most difficult step.
Hi David! I might include a Keystep tutorial in a video when it's essential to the topic/subject of the Synth that I am explaining. There are many (Midi) controllers out there. It's up to the preference of the musician which controller to choose and to connect to the 2600.
Well done Sir ! I've just discovered the Arp2600 Volkitchen's free plugin ! It's Giant ! I wish to add if in one sens, as u said, ur tutos/tips r ok with vst clones also, it's a good way to learn/understand others Synths, in general, too ... So... ... thanks a lot. A FFT called Alban.
This is a fantastic tutorial for beginners like me. I have only had my blue marvin for about a week and was completely lost. You have helped me understand what does what. I'm confused about one thing though, I have all my sliders and switches just as you have yet yours sounds great. Mine not so good. I'm wondering what is different. Thanks for your very informative videos Ralph and have a great Christmas.
Hello Mark, glad to know that my tutorials have helped you to get started with the 2600 Synth. Please bear in mind that the 2600 Synth is an analog device which means that a certain slider position on one 2600 device will NOT necessarily yield exactly the same sound on another 2600 device. Moreover the EQ on my mixer will also have an impact on the sound of my B2600. Wishing you a peaceful Christmas too! Ralph
One more comment. Thank you again. We had a few other things to look at that you didn't mention to get a good initial sound. It took some tweaking with the help of a friend who has been using a 2600 plugin. Different animal in some ways. Can't wait to learn more.
@@RalphBaumgartl I'm actually a professional musician/composer/educator and not new to synths, just to this one. I've been a musician 45 years. Not new to synthesizers but this thing is a beastie until you get to know the routing. Your videos are great. I called a friend who uses a 2600 plugin and he laughed at my plaintive cries for help and we went to work. At 4:30 this morning, I had an epiphany and went out to the recording studio to work some more. I get it now. Between your videos and his help, I'm getting the flow and this thing is fantiastic. I'm watching the oscillator video today and it's helping even more. I'll watch them all and recommend you to anyone who asks. My buddy and I are planning a software v hardware video featuring my Juno 60, Model D and this beast soon. Thank you again very much for the help! you're an absolute gentleman for providing these videos.
@@davidpetersonharvey Thank you David, that's quite a compliment coming from a professional musician. Stay tuned, more tutorials about clones of ARP classic Synths are coming up. 2023 will be enlightening 😉😃 Greetings, Ralph

For beginners who are stuck with MiDi controler issue, simply look at the back of your Behringer unit, look at the tiny microscopic settings for Midi canal, and try one by one every canal. In my case, canal 11 was working fine with my Keystep and any synth other synth set on 11. For some reason, I was not successful to control my 2600 via basic canal 1.
Great videos. I like them a lot. The "mixer out" is in fact an input into the reverb ? The patch point between the mixer and the pan is also an input ? Are you planning on doing a video on the section that is on the bottom left ? LFO, Voice Mode, Trigger mode and the outs etc. Thanx anyway for all your videos
Hello Xavier, yes, I am planning to make a video on that section too. My aim is too cover all modules of 2600. Just a few more videos to go. Thanks for watching, Ralph
In diesem Sinne weiterhin "Fröhliches Schrauben". Da ich sehr interessiert an weiteren Videos bin, habe ich Sie einmal abonniert.
I love your videos and your friendly clear explanations of this machine. I did watch your cv connections video but still found myself scratching my head with something I'm trying to patch. How can you split the 3 vco's to different tracks on a device such as the Keystep pro, or Korg Sq-64? Best regards!!
The Midi implementation of the B2600 is rather limited, thus you would require three Kesteps or Korg SQ-64s to send a separate CV signal to each 2600 VCO individually. Greetings, Ralph
Thank you for watching my content. I haven't made a video about the tuning process. I recommend you just find a 440 hz video on RU-vid and tune an A on your keyboard against it. Greetings, Ralph
I am a great fan of Klaus Schulze (RIP). He also used the ARP 2600 very often in his 70's periode where he made the best albums. Now I am trying to find out for what kind of sounds he used this 'machine'. Maybe you can give me some hints. 🤔
As you said he was using the ARP 2600 on most of his 1970s albums starting from "Picture Music" onward. Check out some of the old cover sleeves, sometimes he mentions what he was using the 2600 for.
@@RalphBaumgartl 👍 yes I still have these vinyl albums now already for almost 50 years. I started making synth mysic with the original MS10 and MS20 from Korg sequenced with the SQ10 also from Korg.
Not sure about the midi settings... like what the dip switches on the Arturia should be...??? Maybe you could do a video on a basic studio setup with a synth, keyboard, audio interface, mixer and DAW>>>>>>?
You can set the Keystep or a DAW to send notes on all 16 Midi Channels. Then you can leave the dips on the Barp2600 at any position. But you can also set the Midi Channels individually on the Barp and Keystep.
@@RalphBaumgartl Thanks. Maybe you have or can do a video on exactly that. You have a 2600, a moog, a drum machine and some DAW. Where to plug in which cable and settings (at DAW also) because almost nobody explains the details of that :)
@@DJ369-Miami Hello 👋 thanks for watching my tutorial. Could it be that you are confusing me with another channel? I don't have a Moog Synth nor do I have a genuine Drum Machine. I have an Electribe 2 though but that's not exactly what you call a Drum Machine. Anyway thanks again for watching! Greetings, Ralph
Hi Ralph. Thanks for your easy to understand and informative video. I have just purchased a Behringer 2600 and am currently waiting for it to be delivered. I already own a Korg ARP Odyssey and would like to position the B2600 to the rear of the Odyssey. The Odyssey does not have a Midi out din jack (only midi in) it does have USB midi and CV/Gate in/outs. My question is: Can I play the keys on the Odyssey to play note on/off for the B2600 using the CV and Gate jacks instead of Midi? I know I can USB Midi through a computer, which I will do when I want to sequence in a DAW, but hoping to also have the option to just play the Odyssey to control note on/off to the B2600 stand alone. Thanks for any advice Kind Regards Paul
Hello Paul, yes you can establish a CV/Gate connection from your Odyssey to the 2600 Synth. Kind watch this tutorial here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-St4bx1Vz3mE.html BTW, the Behringer Odyssey features also a DIN Midi Out Port. The Korg ARP Odyssey has a USB Midi port. You should be able to make a Midi connection to the Behringer 2600 via USB Midi the USB Midi Ports. Greetings, Ralph
Hi Ralph, Thank you for your prompt reply. I followed your youtube link for how to connect external hardware synths and sequencers to the B2600 via CV/Gate. This has answered my questions, Thank you. I have Subscribed to your channel and look forward to using your videos as a learning tutorial for the B2600. Thanks again and keep up with the great videos. Kind Regards Paul
Yes, you can create certain Buchla sounds with the 2600 Synth. But please bear in mind that the Buchla way of sound creation is different than subtractive Synthesis, thus the Buchla process might yield different musical/sonic results. You should compare both systems and and then decide with which you will feel more comfortable.
Hello Ralph, nice tutorial, very useful :-) I have a question : I know you get all 3 models of Behringer arp 2600, the black the gray and the blue I wanted to know if you have heard any difference between gray and blue ones? Thanks a lot for your help. Best regards Armen
Hello Armen, in my personal opinion there's a slight difference in the spring reverb sound of the Gray Meanie and Blue Marvin. But I guess that's due to the fact that the spring reverb is a mechanical device. Thus there might also be a difference between the sound of the spring reverb between any B2600. Greetings, Ralph
Greetings, Ralph
Your videos about the 2600 are really great! Thanks for that and more of it =). But I have to admit one thing I haven't understood yet: When you say you tune an oscillator to a certain note, it means you press the corresponding key on the keyboard. If you now tune an oscillator an octave below, does that mean you press the same key, because otherwise they would be exactly the same, right? So does that mean you look for a "root note" that also corresponds to the key on the keyboard and then press the same key again for the other two oscillators, but this time you "detune" the oscillator? I don't understand how e.g. in the ARP2600 Patch Book the tuning is meant, because the piano key should be indicated at the same time which should correspond to the tone so that the whole thing makes sense if e.g. a Middle C should NOT correspond to the key C? Probably the question is totally stupid and I apologize for my obtuseness :-)
Thanks for watching my content. Here's my tuning process: I choose any A key on the keyboard depending on wether I am going to play Bass or Lead lines. I tune that A key to a 440 Hz A note on one VCO. Then I tune another VCO one octave below. What I do with VCO 3 depends on the musical arrangements I have in mind. Hope that helps. Greetings, Ralph
Hi Ralph, this is absolutely a good video for new users like me. I've just bought one a week ago. I still haven't had a chance to play yet because I was not even able to turn it on. As I turn it to the "on" position, there were only two lights that were on but your's are all on. Would you be able to help me a little? Mark.
There is a knob on the back of the B2600 with which you can adjust the LED light intensity of the sliders/lights. Make sure it's not turned to the OFF position. Greetings, Ralph
@@RalphBaumgartl Hey Ralph, I am having fun playing 2600. I use the Keystep keyboard to connect to it. It works great. But I can't get the sound into Logic ProX, which is the software I use to compose. If you can guide me through so the sound from 2600 can be recorded.
@@citispotteaandcoffee5420 This process depends on the kind of audio interface you are using. The setup and between your audio interface and Logic may be different to other audio interfaces. Best is to check the online help of your particular audio interface. Greetings, Ralph
Thanks for the video Ralph. Can I ask you what is the best way to connect the audio output of the 2600 to an audio interface? As the 2600 has a left and right output and my Focusrite Scarlett interface has 2 XLR / 1/4 inch inputs at the front, should I just connect left output Ito one input and right output into the other or do you think I’d be better off with a small mixer the could sum both signals together and connect that to a single input on my interface? Any advice would be appreciated.keep up the great work!
Hello Andy, thanks for watching my content. I always prefer to connect a mixer to my audio interface when I am working with Hardware Synths. This also has the advantage that you can make s stereo connection from the Behringer 2600 to your mixer which enables you to use the "stereo" reverb of the Barb 2600 and create some panning patches. Please make sure you also watch my other tutorial which clarifies the "stereo" reverb. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vQx88p4dutc.html Happy patching! Ralph
Dear Ralph, may I ask you something different. For 3 weeks now I own a 2600 Blue Marvin, it is a nice 'machine'. I make Nice sequences with it. But what to do with the small white sliders at the back left from the midi input. I can't find any explanation for it somewhere on the internet. 🤔
Thanks for you're answer. I Saw this also in the manual, but there is no solution tot find how tot do this. I der 16 possibilities but there are only 4 switches so how can I then create 16 different possibilities. That whole MIDI story is for me still a secret world. 🤔🤭 Greetings Gijs Bouman
@Ralph Baumgartl, ok thanks, I shall try to learn something about it. My Doepfer Dark Time sequencer works allright with the 2600 so I think it had found automaticly the right channel 😀😀 greetings Gijs Bouman.
