This is the Behringer Composer PRO-XL MDX2600. Most of the reviews on RU-vid of the Behringer Composer don't show you how it sounds so I figured I would mix it up and give you some audio samples.

I think you're under-driving the compressor. The green level is peaking at -18dB, so you're working around 16-20dB lower than nominal (0dB). This explains why you need so little gate/expander, or why at 4 notches it starts to make your mic audio cut out. I'd also set it to be an expander rather than a gate for vocal work, so that the noise floor is simply lowered rather than chopped off to nothing (the gate is more useful in a situation where you're trying to prevent multiple mics from cross talking, like when recording a drum kit). I'd wind up the output of your pre-amp, and make the compressor work more. You can then set the thresholds of the compressor and gate/expander higher if you find it's compressing too much. The fact all the red LEDs come on when you stop talking is the gate/expander in action - it's pulling the level of your noise floor right down. You also say something about the unit making your quiet sounds louder, and that's not what compression does - compression is a gain reduction function. You can make sounds at levels below the knee sound louder by turning up the output gain (sometimes called make-up gain). The make-up gain is intended to replace some of the gain lost by the compression process, but by this virtue, it also raises the level of anything that hasn't been compressed (that stuff below the knee). You're also running a really high ratio, which is making the unit work more like a limiter than a compressor. Maybe you could make a video where you change the ratio to show the difference it makes? At least you've managed to set up some fairly nice sounding attack and release constants that suit your voice - I've heard some reviews where these are badly set, and it makes the output "pumpy" and subjectively horrible to listen to. Other than those really technical notes, this is a good review. I've used an MDX2600 for many many years in a broadcast environment, mostly as a limiter rather than a compressor, and for the money, you get a pretty good single band compressor. I'm pretty sure they're more expensive than they used to be too - I'm sure I bought mine for less than £100.

@@jaredrogers1320 I can't really give any hard advice on your suggestions. The best thing to do is try it out, listen to what it sounds like. and judge for yourself if it sounds good or not. You seem to be applying several layers of compression and leveling, and you might find it's a bit too much. Note that if you compress something twice, the effective end ratio will be the product, not the sum, of the ratios. So 3:1 compression followed by 4:1 compression is the same as 12:1 compression. I generally compress mics before adding effects (like reverb), because compressing reverb or delay or echo reduces the decay of these effects, which can result in muddy mixes. Finally, before you go crazy with effects and enhancers, take a long hard critical look at how you use EQ, because cutting or boosting particular frequencies can change the way your mic audio sounds or fits in with other sounds in the mix (for example, don't boost the mid-range on everything, because you'll end up mixing mud. Assign frequency ranges to each component of your mix, and cut the frequencies that are used by other things (cut first, then think about boosts later). An EQ that allows you to sweep through frequencies will help you to identify objectionable resonances that you can then cut.
@SteveCaddy
@SteveCaddy 3 года назад
@@jaredrogers1320 As for meters... LED meters are useless other than for checking the levels of tones (and even then they aren't accurate enough). Effects units don't affect tones in the way that they affect more dynamic input, so trying to use tones for anything other than initial line-up is pointless... and thus LED meters are mostly nothing more than eye candy, so go for moving coil if you are serious about metering. Also, get meters that show you want you want to see. VUs generally bounce around too much for dynamic programme, and aren't generally fast enough to measure actual peak levels, so are again only useful for tones. VUs with a damped action are better at showing average levels. PPMs (most often seen in broadcasting) have a fast attack and slower decay, so better represent peak levels, but not average levels, so you have to allow for that, allowing speech peak levels to be higher than peak music levels so that the average levels of both are about the same. Meters are useful, but use your ears to tell if something rounds right or the balance of the mix is right. Your ears are your ultimate monitoring tool for everything from levels to how good an effects chain is.

Behringer makes some great rack gear Shane. For my PA setup, I'm using their 12 channel rack mixer, with the DBX 166xs compressor/limiter (for vocals) and a Behringer 30 band stereo EQ. The 12 channel rack mixer has build in effects which you can mix into any channel. I also bought a TC Voicelive to try out for a bit of fun, but haven't had the time to play around with it. But the MDX2600 sounds pretty good, I like that enhance + tube buttons too.

I've had a Composer Pro since 1998. I've not used it a lot because I had a Focusrite Voicemaster which was my go to back then and although I used to use the Composer on my mixes back then I usually took it off and just leveled my mixes how I wanted them without compression and left it for my mastering engineer to work his magic. I've recently taken it out of storage and I'm going to use it on vocals going into the Composer Pro then into my mixer. It should be interesting to hear the results. Thanks for the tips.

So does the mic hit the Composer unit first? Or is it downstream of the preamp? Imma newbie. I just got both of these units myself and hooked it up with the preamp first after the mic (I figured this unit has the phantom power whereas the Composer Pro XL does not, so that suggests mic should go to it first). Also, the physical size of my units are exactly opposite of what you show, my Ultragain Pro preamp is smaller than the Composer. Thanks for the informative videos!

Larry Yearight thank you. Yea I usually run three to four people. They make the MDX 4600 which would work. I’m just trying to see different setups

Is there a huge difference between the 2600 and the 4600? Just picked up the 4600 today and wondering if I should've gotten this, instead?

I haven't tried the 4600. I ended up moving to the Rodecaster Pro a while back but if the 2600 is doing the job, you won't need to upgrade.

could you maybe do a set up without the ultra gain? I have the compressor, I have the same microphone and can't for the life of me get it to monitor or sound half as good as this? I have a focusrite 2i2 and also a yamaha mg10xu, I've tried it with both and can't seem to get it to sound good? am I missing something?

Yes it can but the expander will probably be a better choice as it's less abrupt.

Nice one. Wish they did just a single channel version of these, I feel like dual channels a bit over kill for just narration etc.

Check out Behringer’s Ultrasound UV1 for a single channel pre and processor. A lot like the dbx 286s but with the addition of a USB interface. Very nice.

It doesn't require Phantom power as it's a dynamic microphone. Check my review of the Rode Procaster for more info :)
