With all the affordable analog synths from behringer to me this is the best one, the internal sequencer and classic roland sound is more my speed than even the 3 osc model D. I have been out of music for some time but behringer is pulling me back in with their new products. For sure grabbing the MS 101 RD 808 & RD 909
I agree the 101 is great but I have no idea why people still want the same tired 808/909 sounds. Especially when drum machines like the DrumBrute and Uno Drum exist. They’re still cheap and offer a fresh take and set of sounds while still being reminiscent of the classics. We’ve only heard the 808/909 for the past 35+ years 🙄
@@HotStrange True, true. But for many of us, we wanted these devices for decades to make tracks, and they've always been out of our reach. Now that Behringer is selling at reasonable prices, we're gonna buy these synths and drum machines and make the tracks we've been wanting to make for so many years! I'll grant the sounds are dated, but who really cares? We've already passed the musical singularity, there is no progression now, no cutting edge. It's all just sound now, and we're all free to select the sound pallets we enjoy. Nobody has to like our pallets, we do what we do because we want to. But the thing is, many people DO enjoy a pallet that includes 101 and 808. AND... Arturia's analog synths/drum machines have never clicked with me. I was one of the first in the States to own the MInibrute, I ordered right when announced at Namm. It was great to be able to afford a new analog synth. But that synth did not have the mojo, or I couldn't find it. I found I'd rather use vst's for their convenience rather than deal with hardware sequencing and recording for the sounds I got out of the MiniBrute. I don't know what it is, but Arturia's analog is just dead to my ears. It doesn't have that breathing, living sound that Analog can bring. Long answer, I guess, but we've had the guitar for 500 years... still makes a sound people want to hear.
@@holygeneration7 Normal is an obsolete word. Micro, slim, mini, touch , ribbon, buttons would be “normal for their respective synth. Since you want to be insulting, I'll just say it’s obviously complicated for you and narrow minded. Upgrading your vocabulary will upgrade your mind. Behringer is on the mark but Minilogue, Microfreak, Roli to Stylophones have “alternative keys” on some of their boards and groove boxes. How are you going to fit “normal" keys on a mini synth or mini controller? Or try this, mini keys are normal for a mini synth and please don’t say one can’t play well on a mini synth lol and if you can’t then you probably suck at keys anyway. We’re done jack ass.
@@holygeneration7 Guess what Mr. Normal read what you typed ...He never touched the Normal keys so your statement was wrong on all angles lol. You’re a fraud.
The SH-101 was my first synth in the early 80s. Monophonic, single oscillator, no presets, no effects. Couldn't give it away once digital synths and samplers hit the market. I now have 10 iPad "analog synth" apps that will clearly blow it out of the water for a fraction of the price. But regardless, I have an MS-101 on pre-order already. 2 reasons: Knobs and Nostalgia. $330.00 happily spent. (Oh and I do have an SH-01A).
Great demo I had the Roland SH01a and was not happy with it it sounded bad to me so I sold it plus was to small for sliders I am definitely getting this one I did have the original Roland SH _101 and this sounds just like it 👽👽👽
Very very close , great Demo. Not quite there with the noise and resonance but with all the extras this is a no brainier if you don't have one and midi through Bargain.
Yeah it's got a much brighter, harsher sound. The high end has a kind of distorted edge to it. Main deviations from the SH-101 are: much brighter noise osc (white vs the 101's pink), filter resonance is different, envelope slope is linear vs the 101's exponential curve, and no auto-legato. Pretty big differences in my book. Having said that, for a little over $300 bucks (the cost of a single oscillator module), the MS-1/01 is a cool little synth capable of 101-ish sounds and unique, harsh tones thanks to the addition of FM. I see it as it's own thing rather than a clone of the 101. They sound totally different to me, but my ears are super sensitive to the subtle qualities of synthesizer tones, and I've been listening to music made with the 101 literally since the 1980's - it's a sound that's ingrained into my consciousness.
Great demo, I'm relying on Behringer to 're issue the Jupiter4 and Jupiter 6, let's hope they do, Roland have obviously side stepped two of their greatest instruments .. reasons unknown.
The reason is pretty obvious. It’s not the Jupiter 8. The 8 is niche enough but not enough people even know about the 4-6 to warrant producing it. These companies are out to make money after all.
@@HotStrange I'd have to politely disagree. The Jupiter's are 3 of Roland greatest synths, the 4 being a Roland vintage classic, if there was no call for them, then the originals wouldn't be selling for thousands
Matthew Jessup That’s not true at all. The originals are expensive because collectors and rich hobbyists will pay that. That does not mean you’re average musician wants one or would pay that. Synthesizers on the whole don’t sell by the millions and something like a Jupiter 4 would sell even less. Sure, hardcore enthusiasts would be happy. I’d be all over it. But I don’t see them remaking anything besides the 8. The others just aren’t popular enough.
Nice demo. Great synth for the money It doesn't sound much like a Roland SH-101 to me. It has its own unique sound which is capable of much harsher tones thanks to the addition of FM and a much brighter noise osc. Overall, it's a fun synth with a lot of great sound sculpting capability. I kind of see it as being its own beast sonically, regardless of the design.
I am looking to buy this, I have a bunch of vsts but no keyboard so I'm wondering if this is a good option? I was thinking about the model d or neutron but neither have sequencers
EDP Wasp please Behringer. You know how to do it. I'm pretty sure the synth community would love this one back too! You could call it the Behringer "Sting", credit me and throw me a free one for the idea as you would make Millions! Oh hell, call it what you want, just make it already🤔🙂. I'm asking as you've done such a great job with this must have MS101.
It can do accents and rests, I really like the accents. Can't do glides or legato steps tho :( Also u cant step it through with another device like the trigger info of a drummachine.... thats the only thing i didnt like!
@@stefanoskollias According to andertons music UK who have it for sale on preorders say the Sequencer has adjustable accent, gate time, ratcheting and glide time per step. I believe the prototypes that were given out for demos on Behringer new products do not have all the full features on the sequencer enabled yet.
Cool demo. I use the SH-101 daily and I'm not really hearing the similarities though. Seems like its own thing which is fine, but I wouldn't buy one thinking you're getting a 101 clone.
The difference is probably due to the fact that the electronics in yours are nearly 40 years old, and this one is brand new. It's possible that the one in the demo sounds like a *new* SH-101 sounded in the early '80s. Obviously, we'll never know.
lol u just don't wanna admit it's an sh 101 & more..the roland SH 01A, that one is a totally different synth...but this one? the resemblance is uncanny..check out craigslist, people are selling their old ass sh 101.. glad i got rid of mine last year as i got sick of the maintenance cost. But LOOKS wise i prefer the original..& ofcourse is behringer is behringer. people who jump in the bandwagon of Juno 106 & SH 101 who paid over a thousand are just so 2000 & late hahaha but ye it's a museum item ;]
@@SethJohn I have a old SH-101 and have had 3 of them since 1996. You need to get your ears cleaned. This replica sound 99% like a SH-101. Strop trolling!
it's ok Seth..i hope the tuning of your SH 101 is tight so you can justify what you've spent ya late bloomer lololol i just don't like pretentious comments when it comes to sounds/music
@@richiedon9133 "Seems like its own thing" = pretentious? I hope your folks installed outlet protectors in the basement, Richie. We can't afford to lose you.
very watery right at 17h38. amazing synth for the money. dead easy controls, awesome sound, super versatile.it would be so cool if it had more modular connections and a delay and reverb inside.
Does not sound much like my SH 7 I think it’s old school op amp driven, the mixer overload on the triangle wave blows out headphones pretty easy. I like listening to old analog synths in busted out headphones it gives them a bit more grit
it does not have the "original Curtis oscillator". original DIL version 3340G is still available by the original manufacturer OnChip/Curtis. MS101 uses the v3340, an SMT clone by CoolAudio/Berhinger. which sounds ballpark, but not quite the same. i find the filter and resonance colder and more cutting than on the original, and top end is tilted and noticeably harsher. tone seems mid scooped lacking warm low end. overall solid sounding, and incredible value obviously, but sonically it lacks some of the magic that i find in SH101.
I wann be open...really..but as soon as i have to test i will close all oscis , close the filter, open reso fully and slowly..gently open the cutoff. And when the speakers breath just air slowly in an out and the earth starts to tremble THEN we have a deal. If not, it's trash ;)
Dude... As they say in Birmingham... Yau need to get some mate on yer boons.... MS101.. Got one of the first off the line, didn't work, had to get the firmware fix... It's ok... Emperor's new clothes for sure I'm afraid..
@@oracle-0018 James reeno gives the right answer to jing garcia.... It looks like you don't understand the subject.... and answer like a ****** troll. He brings good knowledge, you bring bad opinion. Roland boutique = just program in a chip , you can put all the polyphony that you want ( while the power of the chip allows it ). MS101 = real analog synthesizer! every feature in the synth need specific electronics components, if you want to have two features of the same type ( like envelope, LFO, filter, oscillator, etc.... ) you need to put twice of the specific electronic components. Very low price analog synth or polyphony, you must made a choice, you can't have both. MS/SH 101 are monophonic and have minimal architecture for being cheap and available for everyone. Moog One is polyphonic and have a more rich architecture (several VCO, envelopes, etc... per voice ) and is very expansive, not for everyone.
