Fantastic job showcasing this synth. I love that Behringer are truly listening and delivering firmware upgrades on a short notice. Let's hope they continue this trend with all of their products.
My brother, this is gonna be so stupid long but please just hear me out: *commencing over the top praise* (lol) this video just helped me SOOO friggin much!!! It's almost 7am over here and I've been pulling my hair out trying to understand a few little things with this synth, not only for some hours today/tonight but the last couple of WEEKS (since I got it basically) AND YOU JUST EXPLAINED IT ALL PERFECTLY! I'm still a bit of a novice as I've only been doing this a few years now (been watching/commenting for those years too, not sure if you'll recognize my handle/name, genuinely no worries if not friend I know you get a LOT of viewers/comments lol I digress:) and I'm embarrassed to admit I've sorta struggled to TRULY understand many of these general concepts (even with it's simplicity and a lab full of synths with a few years of studying/tinkering, I was still confused/lost). But for some reason dude, something about THIS synth combined with YOUR demonstration and the other tidbits of info I've collected over the years (a lot from you btw) I now FULLY understand not only the 800 but analog subtractive synthesis IN GENERAL! EVERYTHING STARSKY! EVERYYYTHINGGGG hahaha!!!!! ("...I Know Kung-Fu..." - The Matrix) YOU JUST MADE MY BRAIN "CRACK THE CODE", connect ALL of the dots and fill in ALL the blanks! NOW IT ALL CLICKS!!!! I could do backflips out of excitement right now!!! This demonstration is SO perfectly straight-forward/informative/intuitive it made me realize how SIMPLE it really truly is! I'm terrible at learning from manuals (ofc I read them but still I'm always left scratching my head at some points) and dude, for some reason, the way YOU explain this stuff verbally/visually ACTUALLY works for me (as opposed to just reading it)! I think I've left you a high praise comment before (don't even get me started on your comparison videos, if this weren't already ridiculously long I'd write paragraphs on just that alone!) but man this video is "IT" (YA MAGNIFICENT MF-ER!!!! lmfao)!!!! I'm SO sorry for this novel and being wildly "extra" but I NEEDED to give you that validation/respect! Like I NEED you to understand how much you just helped me my dude, I cannot express my gratitude enough! I'm sure you mostly just do this for fun but I want you to know how helpful this sort of thing is for people! You deserve WAY more than 50k subs fam, you should be one of THE BIGGEST faces of synths in general! I hope you get sponsorships from EVERYONE! Your passion/love for this realm shines in your presentations/videos and it's CRAZY infectious/inspiring! Nobody is more deserving! Thanks again man and much love from Florida (USA)! P.S. dude, do you have any merch? I'd love to buy a shirt or mug or SOMETHIN'! I dunno I just need some Starsky Carr swag in muh life/studio now lol also just to add as a side note: your jams are way dope dude js, straight BANGERS every single time! aight I'm gonna piss off now and make some music! So sorry again lmao - Audrey Azwell
What a lovely comment! Shows what we can all do when we help each other. This is EXACTLY what I do this for so it’s fantastic to see I can fill in the gaps and help with anyone’s understanding. Pinned because it deserves it!
They are pretty decent at least a 6 or maybe a 7 out of 10 they are not quite 8 voices of a pro 1, there seems to be a little roll of in the lower mids and a little in the bass but it sounds pretty thick and fuller sounding compared to the Deepmind so its Behringers best poly synth in my opinion. It's a no-brainer for the price but the Dreadbox Nymphes is still the best midrange Analogue poly synth soundwise which can be picked up for around the same price if you look around, the Alpha Juno 1 is also a better option as well.
I had kinda of an opposite promise. Sell all my synths and buy new (to me) compact ones. Pro800 was buy number 1. Sh4d will probably my second and final purchase since its 2 synths in 1 (or 4 if u have a usb setup which i do not currently). Shouldve really sold the old synths 1st though 😄 and menuless wouldve been cool but i like having patches saved.
Ya, this is insane. Just ordered mine. I can't believe I'm going to finally own a synth that resembles my dream synth "The Prophet 5". Absolutely insane. Sure, not a Prophet, but if I get 80 percent there I'll be the happiest person in the world. This is so cool. Thank you Behringer for cloning a lot of these old classics. So freaking cool.
@@zap7759 problem is... I can't get any sound out of it!! LOL. I have a little M-Audio "Keystation" that's only USB out. So bought a little box from Keith McMillen that powers the M-Audio and you go USB in to the box, then Midi out of the box into the synth. I'm getting nada, and it's been frustrating me all day. Not sure what component it might be. They're all new.
Hey saw your reply, sorry about the frustration. Just forget about usb keyboards and converters and get a midi controller with 49 or more fullsize keys and real midi I/O, even a used one found locally for like $50.
@@zap7759 The box I bought is proprietary to that company. Other companies make them as well so I'll swap it out. The problem is, I'm building a walnut chasis with a built in keyboard for the Pro800... kinda to make it an actual synth and not a module synth. So I want the keyboard to be roughly the length of the synth. Which you don't get midi outs. It looks pretty cool so far!
I was really surprised for how much the Pro-800 packs for that price! 👌Say what you want about Behringer, but they are the only ones who do not sell their synths in speculative prices!
but if you bought an original dave smith or sequential you would get what you pay for. i know a lot of stuff is overpriced (like roland with their one chip for all solution), and behringer just breaks easily. and forgetting the case where dave smith was sued by behringer because an employee of dave smith had a comment on behringer for ripping gear of...
@@michel5148 "behringer just breaks easily." - Deepminds/Model Ds/etc. that have been out for years do not appear to be faring worse than other synths.
@@michel5148 "Behringer breaks easy"? That maybe would be the case some 15-20 years ago, but they have upped their quality control a lot over the years. I have not seen it being an issue with their hardware Synths at all. You would hear a lot more from users of it being a mass issue. It isn't! Just about every "classic" analog Synth manufacturer are vastly overpriced. By several times the price! A person who buys a Prophet, an Oberheim or a Moog buys into the brand, exactly like a person buys a Gucci or whatever fashion item does. They get a status item. And that is fine if you have the money! Often they are bigger and sometimes the knobs is easier to turn "fine tune" into a sound. But that is about it! But at the same time they take up much extra needed space. And the at the bigger size, Behringer easily could make a replica that still is several times cheaper and sounds the same.
@@Magnus_Loov no i don't want a status item. that doesn't come up in my mind even when buying an instrument... why do you think that? do you make music to be liked by others? i pulled open different synths and i can tell there is a notable difference in quality. and i like good quality pots, beside the interfacing aspect, wait till the cheaper pots get dirty and what that does to an analog synth... and there is a difference in sound it's, in the little nuances. and for the record i don't have money!, i just have patience...
Holy cow, it responds to poly AT as well? I was already planning on getting it (or maybe even two of them.) This is gonna sit so well with the Hydrasynth, Seaboard and Osmose 'boards!!!
Great demo there Starsky. Love my Pro-800 and yeah the aftertouch support is well welcome when paired with my Hydrasynth. I've also only good things to say about Thoman, got my Behringer Solina from them too.
I've got my eye on this, so have watched quite a few videos about it, and you are the *only* one so far to mention the fact that it's analogue and takes a while to warm up. New-time synth buyers would probably not realise that and would think it's faulty, so nice one for mentioning it!
Very important to know. I've played shows in cold rooms and had to leave my modern analog synth at the time on for a full 30 minutes before it was stable, whereas usually it was fine in 2-3 minutes.
Thanks for doing this video. As someone who never RTfM I've found your overview a great help. I hope the LFO gets a midi sync feature in future updates.
Damn! That's /so/ "much more betterer" than it was. And, that track at the end, when the sweeps come in, is really reminiscent of something (that I can't place). Great sound, and great track.
Regarding the comment at 7:00 about requests for enabling flicking through presets by turning the value knob: This functionallity has now been implemented with the release of firmware upgrade v 1.3.7.
Thanks for the review. The price and features are fantastic. I just wish that, as part of the upgrades (e.g., 8 voices instead of 6 voices) they had put in a multiline LCD display.
The price and features on this is insane! My polysynth is here. I sold my mini-XD thinking I’d get something with more poly in the future. 8 voices, patch memory, and that old school prophet vibe. Thanks for doing the coverage and behringer addressing the modulation issue. Once I get my credit cards paid off this is the synth to finish my setup.
I have the Pro-1 but I've just decided I'm going to buy this in the next couple of days! I'm not so fussed that it's polyphonic but the Unison and detune have sold it for me because it fits perfectly for a lead synth with that big Supersaw sound. I have other synths that can do this but nothing that's analogue and the Pro-1 has such a nice sound, this really excites me!
Just a follow up. I love this synth. It's different to the Pro-1 but in a good way. It really does sound great and I'm so glad I bought it! Highly recommended!
Let's just be open and honest about it. Thomann is the seller of musical instruments in Europe. I have spent two luxury brand cars in gear there I think. And each time I see a package from them leaning against my mailbox (most don't fit inside unfortunately) my heart skips a beat or two.
Was reading the description, "Sponsored by Thomas with thanks, " I didn't sponsor this video! All jokes aside, great review! Gonna pick this up as soon as possible now that most of the "quirks" are fixed.
Thomann is by far the best store out there. They have the best customer service and warranty, plus an insane amount of stock. I never order anywhere else. Smaller music shops are great too, but you won't have as much choice as Thomann has. The Pro-800 is one I've wanted since it was announced, especially since it is poly, but the sounds just isn't what I'm looking for. Great video, thanks!
I deleted my question about the Firmware, thanks for the info! i can't believe they have integrated it into an app and won't give it us separately. Once I had a reader tablet and it was bricked when I wanted to to update the firmware via Internet. All the other synth companies allow people to download the firmware separately, for more secure updating, via the PC, not via the web. Thanks again!
Thanks for your wonderful videos, I got my Pro-800 here in Iowa last week and the QuickStart guide is hard to follow, so this vid helps so much. Have a Great Day. Waiting on the Edge and Solina in line here in the U.S.
Have you seen the Daniel Fisher sweet water review of the Pro 800 ( February 2024) 2x Pro 800 one panned left- one panned right…..it’s absolutely glorious…no reverb no chorus….no FX ..It’s just sublime and breathtaking as it is .
Your outro track shows what can be achieved with this, I think it's from your last vid so possibly not showcasing the newer features? Someone else did a side by side with a P5 and the results were astounding close for the patches on hand. This just cements whether you love or hate it, you cannot deny it's not great value for money considering its capabilities. Thx for the upload once again.
thanks for the video! it is great how they listen to feedback and fix things accordingly (f env amount issue and earlier the sloppy envelopes). i've been checking out quite a lot of videos since the release and might pick up one soon as well :)
ok I have it now and rewatching + testing out :) Is there any way to skip a step while programming the sequencer? EDIT : I have found this step jump function now, it's button 3 while recording the sequence, sorry for bothering!
This is pretty impressive. You could put two of these in a Rackbrute 6u for not a lot of money and have two great polysynths for live use and still have enough space left over to add FX. The sound is good and the interface is more than manageable. If Behringer make it easy to order additional power supplies, this could be a strong choice for touring musicians that want analog tone that they can easily travel with.
@@zap7759 that’s a good point. You could actually get a rack adaptor. It might make more sense to spend a bit more and get something like a Rev-2 module which would also be easy to travel with and have a more robust IEC power connector compared to two DC lumps.
@@peterkadarmusic9728 Rev2 would have a much bigger engine but the 800 would have a much bigger sound so whichever you need more, I'd rather a Nord Lead than a Rev2 though. With shallow rack cases you could fit a power conditioner and 1U fx processor plus the synths in something the size of a carry-on bag. If I get one it's getting racked with my Pro-1 in a 6U shallow rack.
@@zap7759 That's a great point - I like the idea of adding FX. If you were to choose a case, is there one you would recommend seeing as you're already familiar with the HP of your Pro 1?
@@peterkadarmusic9728 The Gator and SKB pop-up mixer cases come in 8U and 12U I believe. If you're the only one handling it during transport, the shallow Tuffbox cases on ebay have up to 6U for almost nothing, seems like they had taller racks at one point. Outside of getting one built or finding a used rack these will be labeled like "shallow", "short", "mixer/effects rack".
I've used a fair few music retailers over the decades. In modern times some have been spotty or downright awful. Andertons were one that was dreadful for me in ordering as they'd continually lie about dates something was coming in. When I decided to try Thomann out I never went back frankly. They're now my go to for most things as they're incredibly reliable. And if something does go wrong, they fix it quickly. So I agree they're well worth supporting.
To be fair to Anderson’s, I’ve always found them brilliant. Probably the best music shop in the UK, certainly in the London & Surrey area. On line they have always sorted me out too and they are always very helpful and always pick up the phone quickly. It’s not some call centre. Sometimes the new Behringer stuff just takes time to come into retailers.
@@volt7cooltangs701 You're completely missing the point. They are good in some respects but this is an area they're not. It has nothing to do with stuff coming in. It's about LYING. When you order stuff and they tell you it's next week it's coming in, yet you contact the manufacturer and they tell you, no it's a problem and it's not going to be for some weeks. So you ring Anderton's again and they tell you again "next week". It's either incompetence or a cynical ploy to keep the money from you and earn a small amount of interest or something, or just try to desperately keep your trade.
so many synths in their Labs, I think there is a Limit when you're that under pressure as Behringer nowadays. They get so much hate, check other companies like Gibson ...terrible QC and only a few Heads saying sth ... Lets be Happy that the Behringer Units are Updateable right? I mean can you Imagine having a Chip Problem back in the 80s with your Prophet? What did you do? Call the Support and wait 2 months for a new one when you live in Germany? I know it needs Feedback but its getting ridicoulos - my WhatsApp or Bank Account App has Issues and they Update it every week....no one hating there right? just sayin' - chill tf down and be Happy you can have a 8Voice Pro Clone for under 400 fcs
@@jann_rygh I own 7 Behringer synths including this one ..no hate here ..but as the lead test engineer at Yamaha R&D for over a decade ..it galls me when stuff gets missed
@@NickHowesAstro ok I get it. Yamaha Networth 9 Billion and Behringer 130K - so all the QC Areas at MusicTribe should be at the same Level, should have the same Wages and all the Synths should cost a Fraction of a Yamaha Synth....let me google an actual Yamaha Synth...wait a second...mh...samplebased....modelling...AWM....wow....no Synths? So you're telling me that Yamaha QC is better just because "your" company does this since the 90s and you're comparing a "little" Company which tries to make a huge Fanbase happy with an international Company who makes also Motors, Bikes, Pianos and idk what? I grew up with a Yamaha Piano and I love Yamaha Pianos more than Steinway or Steinberg or Schimmel, but you just can't compare those 2 Companies and you do it because you worked there and that is just really pathetic in my eyes. Thank God you didn't worked at DSI or Moog, otherwise you would say that the OSCs sound too thin 🤣 But hey, jedem das seine nh?
It just sounds lovely. And you can’t afford not to buy it at that price. Behringer are killing it man. Awesome sounding synths aren’t completely bananas expensive dream gear any more. And you don’t sound like a salesman at all, Thoman are brilliant. Well done on a very well deserved sponsor mate.
Really looking forwards to a Pro 800 vs Prophet 5/10 comparison, I believe a lot of other people are too. Would be great to see such a video done properly by none other than you. There aren’t any on the net and I wonder why. Just one I found, but it’s a basic arp sound that doesn’t do it justice. Hope video influencers are not afraid of doing it just so they don’t put Sequential down while trying to keep good relations with the company for eventual future profits. Sequential will always have their fans that buy their products just as I do.
i wish, copy/paste and also save would be possible from bank to bank (and a compare would also be nice). And the second thing is the random function. If it worked from a little variations over fairly new sound to complete r2d2, it would be much more helpful.
Thanks for the review. I produce electronic music since 1989, back in the beginning of Behringer days they were not really known to put out quality music gear. I bought a mixer from them back in the 90ies and it was a really crappy quality one and used to have alot of noise. Later I bought a midi controller from Behringer, I think it was the first BCR2000, and thats it. I told myself, never again will I buy a Behringer product! But here I am in 2023 buying my 3rd Behringer product! 1. Because I miss my Prophet-600 / 2. because it's just alot of bang for your buck and really a no brainer.
This thing is beyond a great deal. The only criticism I have is the old school remote style buttons. I've seen more than a few of that type of button covering get old, wear, and crack/detach. I get that they're trying to get the Prophet 600 look, but I have to wonder how many years of use is there. I imagine that they're not going to wear is well as the Prophets do, but I could be wrong. Either way, there's a lot here for a small investment.
Even if it looks like membrane buttons, it's actually real buttons underneath, so it should have a lot less problems with reliability than the original.
@@DannyKavka That's sort of a bummer. Well, I have soldering stations and I'm not afraid to use them! Medical grade membrane buttons. If there ever was an oxymoron! It's right up there with military intelligence!
Just uploaded the latest firmware today... Is it my ears but has this transformed the sound of this synth? To my ears, now sounds even thicker and beefier. Unbelievable that Behringer have been so quick off the mark with these firmware updates
@@StarskyCarr yes, just gone back to your False Prophet video...huge difference. Very surprised they have sorted this with firmware updates... Goodness knows what's going on under the hood of these synths....😳😳😳
ayup fella, great work - massive congrats on the Thomann help and it's coming mate, you are doing the work so it's coming. Anyway, the FW anomaly you speak of is this: the encoder (as it stands right now ..... . ) remembers the last function used, so if you were in sync and you leave to main screen mode when you turn the encoder you are actually turning the sync page - hope that helps. Not really an anomaly, just a way of working - i usually leave mine in unison detune or voice spread so i know i can wonk out whenever i like - i have seen people complaining things don't work when in fact after i dig a little bit i showed them they have adjusted the menu and unwillingly continued after the fact. Could be argued it is daft but i think the opposite, i like it as it leaves a performance function open without the need for a menu.
Cheers… no wonder I couldn’t figure out what the ‘rule’ was!! Never been an issue for me tbh. Knowing that you can adjust the detune/spread once you’re editing the tone is v useful though. A few comments have said they’d like a vintage knob and this a could act as a pseudo knob.
Thanks Starsky, great overview (& I’m sure your previous comparison was a factor in B hurrying up & improving the firmware). Watching/ hearing this I’m going to say a stupidly obvious thing- I really can’t understand why DSI/ sequential didn’t do something like this? Ok they’d never do same price point but really don’t understand why, for decades, they stuck to their (not as good) DCO sound & didn’t go with much better sounding Prophet 5 based synths?
The filter amount thing seems such an obvious oversight, releasing it with that tiny max amount. They've been developing this for years and only NOW they notice this? Well I'm glad they changed it now.
I think they left it low so you could introduce additional modulation via velocity or aftertouch, but it didn’t work for me … or anyone else as far as I can tell. Hence the easy and very welcome fix.
The F-HD in transpose mode is the same as keyboard off or Fixed note on other synths :) Awesome Feature when you want to make the Talking Yay yay Filter fm Sound.
@@StarskyCarr It feel the Same with the Dump Menu - AGAin Dumps Presets 😂 It is a Awesome Synth for the price and i am happy that i bought one even with some of it's Cryptic messages.
Anyone thinking of grabbing one- just came back into stock at Sweetwater this morning on July 29th 😎 I have a solid vintage synth collection but man this thing sounds beautiful for $399!
Very useful video and thankyou for making it. My one wish for the otherwise amazing synth itself would be that you could have legato filters for monophonic work - you CAN in highest note priority and lowest note priority - buit last note priority retriggers the filter E.G. on every note press regardless of whether they were played legato. If anyone knows anything about this.... I'm a total "last note" player.
@StarskyCarr thanks. Yes I will request it. I guess that if it's not authentic 600 operation then I don't have a case. Once again.. thank you. Still very happy with mine.. purchased on your say so.. of couse
I was thinking about getting a pro-1 for bass and leads. Can this do everything the pro 1 can and more, or are there advantages to having the pro 1 as a mono (price difference aside)?
If you use a unison mode on an analog synth like this one, you’d have some outstanding bass and leads. Depends if you need two synths in a live format.
21:19 demonstrated the lower limit of my speakers, they could play the low filter G but only whisper the overtones of the D# 👻 My PRO-800 should arrive tomorrow (to join my much loved Volca Keys, v excited) will try to find/create a clear paper guide to the menus an get it understood good without wearing out the wee buttons (also love seeing a bit of everyones-wins venn diagram style sponsorship)
The menus are pretty simple once you e played with jt for an hour or so.. they become second nature. The GLIGLI has a pdf you can print that has scissor guidelines that fits neatly next to the numeric pad! Very handy especially if you’ve not used it for a while.
Sounds great. Do you notice a big difference between the sound of all the Behringer synths you have or are many more minor, subtle sonic differences, or it's more about slight differences in features?
A lot of them use the same filter chip as Behringer now manufacture the CEM but then again so did the Prophet 5, Oberheim OBXa, Fairlight, PPG, pro-one etc … so there’s a fair amount of variation you can get from similar or the same parts. I don’t think they sound generic if that’s what you’re asking. .. but if I got a load of sequential stuff together you’d probably hear similarities there. So a bit of yes and no I guess! But leaning more to the no :)
Thanks.. just an FYI the filters are analog - it’s the digital control if everything that was the big pitfall of the original. Menus aren’t so bad once you’ve played with it for a while tbh. It would be nicer to have a load of extra controls instead but I guess the 80s aesthetic wins sales wise.
@@StarskyCarr Ah ok I see re. filters. I'm not even sure having a digi filter stuck into an analogue path would even work lol Yes, I guess it's the Behringer way not to be adding too much to the OG. Staying faithful also keeps the price down. Personally I'd have been into e.g. their MonoPoly if they had added patch memory. Buttt, I'm more of a patch creator than a player.
Thanks you sooo much !!! I'm french and it's hard to find tutorials that I can understand. Which preset did you use for the bassline in the last minute's demo ?
Thanks.. all the patches on the demo are ones I created myself. There’s no way of exporting individual patches so I uploaded my 100 patches for bank B as a full sysex export to my Patreon site.
thanx for the overview. sounds pretty decent/nice.. but that menue/implementation is a little let down as it is quite confusing and a bit unstable as well. demotrack sounds fantastic..!
Re Thomann, but be careful, if you live in the US, you might have to pay import fees, the synth will be rated 230 volts (even if it supports 120 V), and you'll only get an adapter with a type C plug.
