Very fair review. I think this will be a best seller just for the polyphony and price. I'm more captivated by the Solina despite its limited sound. I'll keep an eye out for your review on the Solina.
12:52 I don't think you realized that the Pro-800 has selectable envelope segment shapes ranging from the original to those improved in the GliGli expansion. Press "PERF + 4" and you can choose between Slow Linear (default, like the original ones) to "Fast Exponential" and some others in between. Click "4" again to choose the same shapes for the filter envelope.
@@gffg387 ok! I will double check it! If I come to a different conclusion, I will be happy to post an extra video! Ok? That‘s why invited you to discuss it here!
less studio real estate :D thx for the review, you always put a smile on me when I watch your videos. keep em coming! also love the super discount 2 poster, great record!
This is a good point! It‘s definitely not a Prophet 5 clone! But it mimicks the Prophet-600 in a very pleasant and authentic way. Including the flaws, like the slow envelopes! For the price it’s actually a great package and shows what Behringer is able to do with analogue Polys! 🤖
@@winesynths I don't think a Prophet 5 is anymore more useful or impressive than this. Less so with the price, polyphony, unnecessary woodgrain actually.
I like this channel. Very believable reviewer. A true synth geek can not deny the awesomeness of the new behringer clones....even while in a room of vintage analog gear. Also, his voice is how I imagine my waldorf Pulse2 talking to me. :)
I quite enjoyed this video, and I now own a Pro-800. One of the best purchases I have made, ever. I also have a Sequential Prophet REV2 (16-voice version), the Pro-800 is a great little device which compares well with the Sequential, and my other analog polysynths. You have to ask - is the Pro-800 the "best-bang-for-your-buck" in the history of synthesizers? I certainly think so!
The Pro 600 was the only Sequential synth i could afford (circa 2005ish)...and subsequently became my favorite, and "go to synth,' even when i got a hold to Rolands, Korgs, Crumars, Moogs, Novations, Casios, Ensoniq, Kawaii and Oberhiems. It it still my favorite synth i owed ( next to my DSI EVOLVER.) And honestly, i prefer its thinner, more brittle sound to actual Prophet 5s.And of course the built in MIDI was a big plus. I think i need this Behringer. I sold my Prophet 600 a decade ago, but only because i couldn't get it repaired.
You seem to have missed that the gligli mods gave the synth 3 extra envelope modes: linear fast and exponential slow/fast. Exp envelopes solve the odd fadeout of the default linear one.
@@panda-fu I hope there is room for improvement as far as it is software. Possibly an update will solve it. I don‘t think that they also use the same old slow microprocessor! 😁
Agree on the display thing. They could have made it more user friendly with just a small oled display and made those hidden things easier available, but that would propably have made it 100 euro more. Can't complain for the price considdering what an original 600 / Juno 106 / Polysix goes for. the Behringer is 1about 1/5th of the avg used prise of those and 2 more voices. It sounds amazingly close to the real deal. I enjoy just to experiment with the Polysix engine of the Kronos. Albeit not completely there, the emulation is good enough for me compared to having to deal with unstable pitch and other problems with many of those old poly synths.
zher ghut, danke Shern! I like the old school basic take without dumb digital effects added. I like what they did here on this synth and I like them *behringer keeping the cost low. BUT NOW, EVERYONE will buy this synth... i guess :!!! :)
A very good overview and review. It's true, the PRO-600s were very limited, nothing as great as the Prophet 5, but it's a good step in that direction, the price is right, and what a wonderful intro to polyphonic analog synthesis for young and old!
Just wondering how many midi channels it has as in multitimbral? They seemed to have stopped making 16 midi channel synthesizers these days. I've looked everywhere online. Great demo though. If it is just a 1 channel sound I'll wait until the Pro 16 comes out but it does sound great.
I just bought the Prophet 10 module (my first synth). Now I find out about this... Are you saying the Pro 16 is a clone of the Prophet 5 (or 10)? Maybe I should return it! THANK YOU.
🙏💚🧡👌you are right for this test, this ask question for Behringer to build their own polysynth with everything they need. For me this synth is in conflict with my Juno 6 original, and I can't find for now as at low price, the musical sound that would complete the Juno sounds, and I have a Deepmind 12 D, with when we cut the effects is a very good concept. So as you said, I would buy the 800 for the look, the memories, and, so, for now I stand to deep sounds exploration, but I prefer buying two model D two Wasp, and using their mono or duo potential, than having a polyphonic not doing original things. I would have preferred a monopoly expander, with added aftertouch ability, than this one as I mount everything in racks for modular, having already six keyboards, and making a mobile studio. However I stand on analogic, modular, would like another poly , perhaps you will explore the question about Two pro800 voices mixed then with modular filters and adds? That was the basic Idea I had considering the low price and the integration to my other settings. But listening the sounds little bit chaotic for my ears, wonder if it would be a good idea, or a loss of energy for a deceiving result.🤔😵 Behringer have some other projects more interesting I hope they will release. When you have already some poly synths, the new one must complete your sound palettes, if this is only to have a look for your studio, this is not useful. I stand some artist to showw me more musical tips on this instrument, melodies without chords and argegiator things.😏😺✨
Nice honest review although an update with the firmware update would be appreciated. I believe envelopes and midi implementation has been improved a lot.
Good stuff, thanks for the video! My favorite Behringer synths have been the relatively original ones: the DeepMind and the Neutron. Does supporting the wine shop linked in the description also support the channel? 😉 Grüße aus Berlin!
Thank you for this very good review. I am afraid I do not know what Gliglis are and surely the envelopes cannot be all that bad? Behringer seems to be sneared at and there seems to be a synthsnob culture around. It is clearly what I am after to learn on . But I actually do not like this term " good beginners" synth. There are people around that just do not have the Moog Money so have to be content ( and love) what we can afford. I think the pro800 is a cracking little synth ( bang for buck) and has all the knobs and buttons to make hundreds of patches. I am old though so old school stuff is good for me. I am getting one and an RD 6 drum machine. So well laid out without a single menu five. It is logical. Mind you my Monotribe drums take some beating. TAKE SOME BEATING!!! AGHHHH get outa here!!

Slightly off topic, but as you use ableton and also have a lot of analog hardware I’m interested in knowing what audio interface you use for all the analog synths you have when you presumably do it via external instruments in ableton, thanks
@@winesynths Great! Some really interesting machines. I will watch now. The Pro-800 can't be beat at that price. You're going to get your value for money even if you just stick it in unison and let it rip (big polysynth unison fan here).
If I had all the Geld, I would have all the synths, but I don't. So.... I have a dm12m and an uno pro and the pro800 is not special enough. I have mono analogs so I am also choosing those carefully (Uno,barp2600,west pest and grandmother). I am really only waiting for the ulibehrheim ub8 or whatever they call it. PS. The uno pro has the 2 filter setup like the matriarch and the bass is pretty good. Of course, nothing sounds like the moogs with the 900 series osc &filter
🍷🔊 🎹Very nice general overview and as always a very entertaining review, thanks! 🙂. According to Thomann mine is still 1 week away and I can't wait to get my hands on it. I spent so much time on the P600 that I am really curious. I do not really agree on the "limited possibility" statement, though. The only limitation in my personal view is the very characteristic, somewhat aggressive filter which makes the P600 (and the Pro-800?) quite dominant. You refer to the Jx8P frequently, but the P600 architecture has - overall - more patch types to offer (e.g. PWM), and even more than most other polys. If you keyboard track filter frequency, you can play the filter resonance harmonically, and since you can FM the filter you can have essentially a 3 VCO poly with two cross-modulations. I just hope that Behringer did this properly. Also, the P600 has an unfortunate hardware design flow in the poly-mod circuitry. I do hope that Behringer has corrected this in the Pro-800. Exciting, anyways.
Sure this is great gear for the bucks - IF we like that sound of the old days, and if we are a Hardware Fan. Over the decades i had many samplers, synths etc .. and in the end i sold them all. Because for my workflow i like "total recall" in the DAW as i find it inefficient to maintain external gear. Sure analog is analog - but that was only a limitation of the old times, limit to 8 voices or less .. just a handful of waveforms. I dont need it though its tempting to have a (cheap) PRO-600.. but when i think it through, its nothing i need. Just a midi keyboard and my Mac, and all Synths are inside and i dont need convertion and complications.. And other people may do it different.
there are two follow up videos covering the envelopes improvements with the new firmware! All on the channel! And even an envelope comparison with other analogue synths! 🍀🤖
@@Subtronik they're 2 diff synths, also a mono will always sound better than a poly for bass duties, it's all about the frequency range and stacking oscillators. Get a Pro800 and compare it, but don't sell the Pro1 till you do a side by side.
My friend bought the Prophet 600 and I remember going around to his flat to sample sounds and ARPS before we combined all our equipment to make a home studio, I now have a dilema though, do I buy the Pro-800 or wait for the Proton to complement my other semi modular Behringer desktop synths?
It‘s a Matriach! And the Synth is not standing on the knobs, don‘t worry! 😁 But the Moog Knobs are solidly screwed to the panel! So it would not be as problematic as on another Behringer/Korg/Roland… 🤖
Any chance you can stop adding chapters to your videos? It prevents you from scrubbing back to a bit I want to watch again (I can only go +five, or -five minutes from the bit I want to watch)
If I leave the chapters, other people will complain about them missing. Maybe you could try another browser? With Firefox i.e. I don't have problems like this?
At first i was like Behringer making synths. 🤣 😂😮 Now after trying then ive been slowly buying them. My only gripe... please Uli I will pay a little bit more for a bit better quality material wise. Otherwise they sound great and the focus is in what people are asking for and in many cases the other manufacturers have been asleep at the wheel.
I just bought the Prophet 10 module. This Behringer is not a clone of the Prophet 5 or 10.... But, does it do stacks & splits? How does it differ with the Prophet 5 or 10? I am new to synths. I can still return my Prophet 10. This thing is about 1/9th the price. Another commenter mentioned a "Pro 16" - I googled it, it is apparently a clone of the Prophet 5. It it going to be produced? Thank you. Nice review!
Behringer teased a Prophet 5 clone called Pro 16 a while ago. By now nobody saw or heard one. The Pro-800 has the same flaws as the entry level Prophet-600 back in the days. If you want to produce music now, with the best synth available for you, stick to your Prophet 10! It will also keep its value over time! And it’s not said, that a Pro-16 will come in desktop format! 🤖
@@winesynths Thank you. My Prophet was $3,300 USD. The Pro 800 is about $350, what I paid in tax for the P10 (maybe less!). Is the Prophet P10 really ten times better? I do like the layer and split capability. I'm a saxophonist who doubles on piano and triples on guitar. This is my first synth; I'm clueless about actually programming it. I had no idea such clones were even possible. I'll assume the Prophet 5 clone won't be around for a long while. I suppose I could get the Pro 800 and keep the P10...
@@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton Ahh! I‘m a Sax player too! With the Prophet 10 you just bought a brand new Selmer MK6. A true classic. Compared to this Behringer is more like a student Jupiter! Both work and sound like saxophones. 😁 A Prophet 5/10 is a perfect Synthesizer for beginners. It is really easy to create new sounds on it! Just learn the basics about VCO, VCF and envelopes that are valid for almost any other synthesizer. Good Luck! 😁
@@winesynths Cool! Actually, I DID buy a brand new Selmer Mark VI - in 1973, for $500 USD, including case, case cover, tax and Selmer D mouthpiece (tenor). That's what they cost back then.... I still have it, I just bought a Rampone last month to have a second tenor. Maybe I'll get the Behringer for gigs?
@@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton Could be a great idea! I got a late Mk6 Tenor that sounds quite bright and funky. And a SA80 alto. Both in original black/gold! What kind of music are you playing?
This synth is great value for a 8 note, dual VCO polysynth. Love the desktop form factor too... but not that keen on the sound of it. IMO Behringer Deepmind sounds better.
Hmmm, I think the DM sounds like 💩 without the effects (which is how I judge all analog synths) and this thing sounds miles better. It's all subjective though.
Don’t worry, that Juno-6 or 60 will always have a really good resale value. If you get the Behringer version you can compare both and keep your favorite one.
I think it is a victory for people. Who but the rich can buy anpropjet 5 for 40 000SEK. Compared with 5000SEK at least you might be able to obtain an instrument as good as others brands. Right on right ho Behringer.
Well if they can pull off this . They can definitely pull off that. I would say a JP 6 clone would be more intresting. JP8 was very much 8 voice discrete which from signal to modulation I think software modulation will fail to capture this properly. Anyway just my opinion.
Unlike some I prefer a relatively simple voice architecture in any synth. I also like the "mostly" knob per function interface & layout. At this price I think they will not be able to make enough of them.
I was hoping this would replace my Bro-1 --I have no more room with the rest of my Behringer gear! 😩 😆…..but now after hearing those envelopes, my pre-ordered Pro-800 will have to be played in the kitchen 🥺🤣🤣
Am I the only one who fails to hear this "beefy low-end"? I've watched several videos of the Pro-800 and listened to various sound examples, and they all make we want to grab a saturation plug-in and dial in even more low-end with an EQ after that, whereas part of the point of buying an analogue synth is not having to do that! Somehow the Pro-800 always sounds thin to me, almost as though there was a layer of white noise on top of everything, drowning out the harmonics. I used to really anticipate this synth for its simplicity and fully analogue polyphony at an unbeatable price, but after waiting several weeks for it to become available from Thomann with no end in sight, I'm gravitating more and more towards cancelling my order. It might be better to either get the Solina for now (which I'd love to get my hands on anyway), or put the money aside altogether and hope that I'll be able to afford a Prophet-6 in a hundred years or so. What tipped the balance even more for me was to hear that the LFO can't be synced via MIDI, so thanks for this important piece of information! This might turn out to be a deal breaker. Frankly, I already own the virtual analogue Modal Cobalt8X, and it sounds warmer and more analogue than this (at least based on the examples I've heard) if you know how to use it properly, so I fail to see what the Pro-800 could possibly add to my synth collection. My impression is that it's just not possible to get a truly amazing analogue polysynth sound at this price point, except maybe with a used Korg Minilogue XD module which only offers four voices. So after watching this review, I'm inclined to believe that unless you're hard-pressed to own a recreation of the Prophet-600, a digital polysynth like the Cobalt8 or Hydrasynth is probably the better option for a tight budget.
Spontaneously I had way more fun with the Hydra Explorer! For sure this would be my first recommendation for beginners or people with a small budget. Watch my review! The Pro-800 is very limited in comparison and does not necessarily sound better because it‘s analogue. In general I think, that people expected a cheap sequential clone with the sound of a Prophet-10. That did not work out! For sure! Behringer wants to leave room for the announced Prophet clone.
@@winesynths That might well be the case. I do have fairly high hopes for the Pro-16, should it ever see the light of day. I might be able to afford that a few decades earlier than an actual Sequential polysynth… Meanwhile, I've answered your "False prophet?" question with a final yes and indeed cancelled my Pro-800 order.
Very nice review and info value!! Unfortunately for Behringer, unless one's desperate for analog with little money, a used Hydrasynth Explorer puts an end to all indecision in this price category.
The Hydrasynth is my favorite digital hardware synth but of course you'd only go for an analog synth like this if you want a specific analog sound. Two different worlds.
@@EnervatedSociety exactly! I really like the Hydra too! It‘s one of the best value for money, if you take the explorer or even the module! Absolute recommendation for beginners with a small budget!
So many people buy multiple Behringer clones. I dont see the point in this as they all pretty much do the same thing and sound the same. having one is ok but you see people with 10 which is ridiculous.
@@Chloe-cv6wm strange advice, as some are mono and semi modular, wich makes sense to buy two model D for example. The pro800 is a poly synth, not comparable . Having two 800 makes only sense to uses the two voices in parallel with modular chain after. Depends of your music..
Great and very fair review, sounds great but when Beh make improvments (like to the Juno which became the amazing deepmind) people were unhappy! Crazy fools! Thanks for the review!
@@scheetmcborsten7977 It's true the consumers are asking for the clones, pretty much daily. I see it all the time. To add, Behringer recently announced that as their cloning journey starts to slow down and or come to an end (because they've pretty much touched on all the major synths) they're going to start focusing on developing their own stuff which was always the plan. Use the clones to learn from and create the base or infrastructure to work off. In other words, now that they have the tech, they'll put it to other uses.
@@MG53v8 what you may want to do is layer the 2 in real time, you will get some exotic sounds imo, using the P800 for middle emphasis and the DM12 for stereo field spread, I think the 2 will complement each other.
My main concern is the longevity of the build components. For what Behr. is charging for the thing how many cost-cutting measures were used on the system guts? You can buy a working Prophet 600 from forty years back, but how many Pro 800s are going to still be functional 40 years from now?
As much as I like old Rolands and other Japanese made Synths, I would never again buy vintage Sequential or Oberheim! They already made problems when new. I also have a 30 years old Behringer Compressor that still works fine. But you never know! 🤓
Well in that case buy 6 of them and keep 5 in the boxes and it will still be cheaper than what I'm seeing a in good condition P600 going for currently. I'm pretty sure you'll get a life time or two out of them. 😜
@@budgetkeyboardist There are already reports of problematic MoogOne, P5/10, 3rd Wave, or any other more expensive synth you care to mention. Have some context at least.
Thats been a concern and an actual issue with said company. Early models of the dm desktop had components start failing because of the heat. Its the only synth I’m aware of that has an actual fan in it. To compare, the Prophet 12 desktop gets HOTTT, and for most including me its been nothing but amazing, for about 10 years now. I worry because of how hot it gets, but well designed unit plus reliable components, hand built by a small company in the US is night and day between mass produced sweat labor in Asia. Just facts, reflected clearly in price.
It'll end up on a landfill site as no way to repair. Down in the basement it'll go passed down to our kids to chuck out when I'm gone next to the graveyard.
@winesynths thanks. I had a Prophet 600 in the early 90s, and used it on a few techno tracks. I loved it. It was easy to use and sounded great. I sold it decades ago when I needed money. I may have to pick up this PRO 800
One thing to learn about Behringer is that the reason why they overpromise for synths that they can't deliver right away is because...behind the scenes they're waging a price war with Chinese suppliers. Behringer has been refusing to close the deal and they keep increasing the threat of how much they're going to buy from someone else if the price doesn't go lower. Behringer keeps increasing the order sizes and then refusing all the order prices. Behringer refused to cave in for almost 3 years and they would not agree to terms of manufactures and suppliers. Behringer could have caved and raised prices on you, instead they went to war. Finally some big suppliers broke down in 2023 and Uli Behringer won. You're now seeing the spoils of that victory.
You can change envelope mode from slow linear to fast exponential. t.noise did. a nice video explaining it :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dbs92VY0fJs.html
You think I am a dumb old man, who can‘t read the quick start guide? But unfortunately Fast Exp is still too slow. 😉 There is an envelope special coming this afternoon with other synths compared on this channel! 🤖 And actually Tom Noise confirms my opinion and just presents a workaround by reversing the envelopes in his excellent video. He also confirmed other bugs I found, concerning the arpeggiator. There‘s a very long and detailed discussion on sequencer.de 🍀
I think Behringer are big and mature enough to leave cloning behind or at least make less of it. I look at arturia who make some amazing original hardware while still 'cloning' in software.
