Maybe it was a little stiff because you didn’t use a fabric medium called GAC900. Super common, which holds the softness of fabric with the addition of dye
Someone told me that u have to use something to brush/loosen the fiber in opposite directions with each coat to keep it oem soft. Otherwise the pant clumps on the fibers and hardens rather than evenly spreading across the whole thing
That looks amazing. I literally had the exact same idea of doing it, but everyone told me it was too stupid so I kind of forgot about it. I have a 1500 and in Europe the only 4th gens that came with a black headliner were the special editions Sports, Rebel, and Limiteds I believe. I have a regular blacked out Sport, and the beige interior made it look so much older. If I didn't already order a new one that comes with a black interior, I would've 200% considered this. It ended up looking absolutely amazing.
Don’t own a Ram but I can relate w/ the disgust on that two tone interior from my 2015 GM bro. GREAT video dude 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽. U should make some gm ones I guarantee that’d be a major hit with how detailed your content is bro
Instead of buying new plastic pieces. You could have purchased black trim spray paint from auto zone and saved alot of money. My whole interior ( including door panels ) were that beige color , and it came out awesome ( except for the liner ).. but I'm going to purchase that dye and do it also. How much dye did it take to do just the headliner ?
@@tbelliveau3312my buddy did it about 2 years ago and none of it has peeled except one piece and that’s because he did one coat on it. the rest he did three coats
Rit fabric dye does the same thing ..mix with hot hot water and sponge on . It’s also $3 a bottle . Don’t think you need it concentrated lol still came out nice
This is good to know, might give it a try since it is easier to come by.. I will say the odd difference with this dye I used, it has some sort of rubber-like texture to it... not sure if that is the same with Rit
I did all the plastic parts, seat belts about 10 months ago just wasn’t sure if I wanted to dye it or replace the headliner due to having to remove the front glass. Glad this worked out for you as I will now try it.
@@ray8380 I bought all new plastic parts and seat belts. I would have bought new headliner but it was 1k and you gave to remove wind shield to replace which is why I’m looking at dying it.
@@joeyphaze7509 www.ramforum.com/threads/black-interior-pieces-on-2016-rams.80931/ I ordered a lot from the dealer before I found this forum. This forum has links but if you don’t want to order from them you can use the part number. Hope this helps.
What a transformation !! I love the way it looks man. I’m planing on doing the same thing to my power wagon. Except I’m going to be paining more trip pieces to keep the cost down. Thanks for taking one for the team and being the guinea pig 😂🤣
I used to do upholstery work and if you take out the seats you can get the headline out without taking out the window and you could have dyed the plastic pieces to save a little money
Only way to take out the headliner with removing the seats is folding it like a taco. I even asked someone who just redid the headliner and that is exactly what they had to do as well without removing the windshield. I did not want to fold mine. I was told by ram and 3 upholstery shops that unless you fold it, there is no other way than to remove glass. Ram installs them without the glass in when made. And I didn’t go with dye because it wears off of the “usual touch” spots. I looked into this for a while before spending the huge chunk of change and the ultimate “wear and tear proof” way was to buy the black plastic. But I definitely agree that other methods could be done, I just wanted to do it the most OEM and least damage to any existing parts (kinda messed up on that one with my over spray but I got that off lol)
Hey Gene- is the process the same for dying the plastics? Spray and let it dry? What's suggested prep-wise? Any clear coat or anything after dying the plastics? Thanks!
I spent $75 on vinyl and fabric spray paint, came out really well and a lot cheaper than buying oem black parts. They hold up to scratches and dents as well.
That was going to be my next option if I couldn’t get the black plastics. But I wanted an OEM look and wanted all the wear areas to be black at all times. Either way though, the cost is definitely way greater than doing an overlay so I think that’s actually a pretty cool idea!
@@DevonsGarage Believe it or not, they look oem. It goes down into the groves and makes it look factory sprayed. Still has the original texture and everything.
@@What_iv_Don3 oh no way? Do you have an instagram by chance? I’d love to see some photos of that if you were to send me a DM. Or email if you don’t. Very interested in seeing that option for future vehicles where black plastics don’t exist lol
@@DevonsGarage _aaron_plank_, dm me and I'll send some pics. I did some yesterday and doing the rest of the grey in a few days (including door panels and a few other harder to get to trims)
I vinyl wrapped my Chrome door handles and every other little bit of Chrome in the cab also vinyl wrapped the gray bits on the dash I highly recommend it
What I will never understand is when vehicle manufacturers design two of the same car with opposite trim designs. For example my 2005 Cobalt (Don't roast me pls) has some black trim and mostly beige for the interior, GM also made cobalts with black headliner and pretty much all of the trim that I have beige as black and all of the trim that I have black as beige. Just, why? Anyways, enough ranting. Time to dye the headliner :) Edit: 560th sub 🔥 Also just a quick tip for anybody struggling with interior trim removal, if you know there are no screws pull sharply, if you pull the trim out too slow you can risk cracking clips
I definitely agree, thanks for the sub and helpful tips! And I second on the *make sure there aren’t any screws or pre-removable clips* before pulling 👌🏻😉
You can pull that headliner no problem. I pulled mine in my crew cab to do my starlight headliner without any issue just takes a little persuasion. The only trucks you have to take the glass out on are mega cabs because of the extra length and also you can do suede visors as well that’s what I don’t so everything matches
Yeah, i started my project around 9am fnished@ 230pm..very time consuming and alot of work, ill not be doing that again , better just too take it to a professional...other then that, im satisfied......
I have a bmw 645 coupe, couldnt tske the headliner out, so i just painted as is with plastic of course, a few over spray, used ajax , water and a scott brite sponge, came right off..the only thing that doesn't work anymore is the master cabin light, i must of popped a wire trying to disconnect, but other then that it taken about 3.5 cans...the paint goes fast, for better results i used a plastic spray gun adapter..home depot $7 bucks..

Almost every non premium car has a light upper liner w black and ive always hated that. Of course if you opt for sport packages or higher end models they offer black headliners. I wish it was more of an option on your regular non-luxury non-sporty cars
Great video. I have a 2014 1500 tradesman and I can’t seem to find any of the black pillars. Even all the part out trucks I’ve come across have just beige. I’m getting close to just getting a can of spray paint from Walmart 😂😂
If you do get to where you just want to paint them as I’m sure the parts are getting hard to come by, they DO have a trim specific paint and I’ve heard very good things about it! I would give that a shot before just the generic spray paint. I want to say Rustoleum makes the trim paint but that’s just a guess, it’s been a while since I had seen a friend use some and it came out great!
Awesome transformation!! Wow! Definitely going to check this out for my 5th gen Ram 1500. I have that same tan headliner and don’t like it at all. Lol.
I’m about to buy a 5th gen Camaro & the only downside about the car is that it’s tan on the inside. I’ve watched this vid so many times & i was just wondering if you’d recommend me doing this ? & how well did it hold up ?
I wish I still had the truck to give you a definite 3 year update, but I can say that in the time I had it, it lasted with no issues whatsoever. I don’t see it fading or anything either since it’s not in direct sunlight. I would love to try again with using the stuff before hand that someone mentioned in the comments (it’s one of the highest liked comments) that will keep the headliner soft rather than get stiff and see how that works as well. As for all the plastics, you can either use a plastic trim paint (still have yet to try that) or probably could spend some $$$ and find black OEM plastics from say an SS or so? That’s just my assumption though
I know this is old. But you don’t have to remove the windshield. Headliner will slip out of the back doors on a crew cab. I know because I did it for dye and starlight headliner! Looks good man.
Great video... my 15 2500 is identical, black interior and beige ceiling and trim and it drives me nuts. I was skeptical about dying it but now I'm beyond ready. Thanks 🤣
What color black did you paint the plastics? Hard to see in video, do they match well. Also would you recommend different color or texture black to match better?
@@patricks1976 I actually left it beige. I planned to do it but because the airbag system is part of the assembly, it was around $480 each side. That was a bit steep just for those two loops. However it would have been a pretty simple bolt on once everything is removed like I did in the video. But the loop itself can’t come off of the original assembly
Looks really 👍I want to spray my headliner black but I'm wondering if I can tape up the lights, moon roof control n every thing else. I was gonna ask how to remove over spray by clay bar.
I’ve wondered about that spray for a long while.. did you do the handles? Would love to know how it keeps up with use (being serious). I always wondered if it would flake or peel off/get scratched

Lots of great information in this video. 👍👍 At first I was unsure I could watch the whole video because it seems like a fairly straightforward job other than the painful part of Dying the roof lining ??? But, you took the time to explain everything perfectly that anyone could understand. Currently looking at buying a new RAM 1500. My only complaint is the Beige interior ??? I could buy the next model up with a Black interior, this would be my only reason ?? Thanks for taking the time to put this video together, making and editing videos can be fun. Although it can be very time consuming ???
I really appreciate this comment! Thank you a ton for the words! It was definitely a long video that I almost didn’t film or produce/finish but it turned out to be my most watched even with how long it is! Glad I could be of help!
I want to do this when I get my car but why not just spray the black spray over everything that was grey when you seen the spray worked instead of putting the black pieces on ?
I believe a heat gun would get rid of the white bend in the plastic, I wouldn’t suggest just going right in thought test a piece first and see how it goes
Awesome video bro thank you I was able to get all the part numbers except the headliner parts hooks rear and front light bezel and front seatbelts do you happen to have that part number ? Thank you In advance
Did the dye have an odor or anything and do you think there’s a better way to apply it to the headliner like maybe with a brush or dipping a rag into the dye and applying it like stain?
I think the spray method keeps it pretty uniform but I would definitely be interested in an easier application as it gets messy. Now for odor, none whatsoever. I’ve actually had worse odor from the headliner glue at a shop rather than this dye. It smelled of nothing at all 👍🏻
I absolutely want to do this with my jeep renegade. Having trouble finding the same dye that you used. Can you tell me where you found it at? Luckily for me, all the plastic is black. But the roof is stupid white. 🙄 NVM, I see that it's in the description 😂
There's several guys on youtube who to ok out "All" the seats and the console. And the headliner comes out the back door. And no they didn't "bend it like a taco". Takes patience like tetris but it can be done. 😂
Hmm interesting because I haven’t found a single video on a crew cab being able to do this. Also 4 professional shops including the dealers body shop all said this has to come out of the window without folding the liner “like a taco” and I would have no problem whatsoever taking out ALL seats and middle console but as a guy did here on RU-vid, it still would not fit out of any door without folding. I also had a guy reach out to me on Instagram and his upholstery shop folded his in half to remove it as well. Luckily he said there is no damage and it looks good for now 👍🏻
@@DevonsGarage Get it the best way you know how man. I'm not trying to come at you wrong. I have love for all my RAM brothers! I'm not saying you're wrong I don't wanna destroy my vehicle doing upgrades either. So I don't blame you for being cautious.
@@saddawgy it wasn’t even just that, it is impossible without folding for this model/gen truck. At least from every professional shop. I would of done ANYTHING to do it without removing the glass or folding the liner. But in this gen crew cab 2500, any person I’ve talked to so far has gotten it done by folding it 🤷🏻♂️ idk beats me. The first video you put is a 5th gen and the second video is a 1500, I’m not sure if there is any difference and I’m not upset or trying to talk you down, just that as of this moment, no one has a video showing the physical removal and I’m thinking it’s because they don’t want the hate for folding the liner. I have 100% honestly talked to 4 professionals and 2 out of state people from this video that have all folded the liner to remove. I’m just trying to give a heads up to people out there with this truck which I am sure you are as well. Honestly I may even eventually get bored enough and attempt it. On camera. Just for fun.. the entire start to end on removing it. I didn’t believe the information either until even my glass guy said he gets a lot of calls for this method of removing the window for the upholstery shops that he charges $100 flat rate. Its a very good video but nowhere in the video, post or comments does it state what exact product was used or a link for anyone that might be interested in getting any of the spray or parts...I seen in the comments people asking and none got an answer...

The dyed headliner has surprisingly held up very well! It can get some smudges on it if you bump it or rub something across it if you are hauling some stuff in the cab. I found that blotting the smudge with a damp microfiber takes it completely out 👍🏻 Luckily in this case I found OEM black plastic, however for the Sierra, it may need to be painted or died. I want to try some plastic dye options with my old trim pieces to give some advice on how this can be done cheaper or when black OEM parts aren’t available. Now for is it worth it... to me I absolutely LOVE this swap and it has made me 100% content with my truck. It’s definitely personal preference but I feel it makes the truck a lot more modern and luxurious. One of my favorite mods to date! Feels like a 2020 model lol

Ralf Hiller that was my main reason for doing it the way I did... I called my local RAM body shop (the one the dealer uses) and they as well as the upholstery shop told me that’s the only way unless you fold it like a taco and it may retain the crease so I wasn’t down for that. And for the moonroof cover, the glass has to be taken out from the inside to then remove the cover from the roof. It all just sounded way too crazy just to make it black. So I am seeing how long I can handle the dye 😅 Another RU-vidr was installing dynamat on his roof and even took out all the seats and said there’s absolutely no way to get it out unless the thing is folded or the glass is removed. Such a poor design. I guess this is the ONLY time having a Tundra would of been a benefit (full rear window movement)
@@DL101ca this is what I had thought of doing when I first heard of needing to remove glass however the glass replacement company said that my rear glass is a lot harder to remove with the power slider and everything vs the front windshield. I just took his word for it
