As the owner/builder of BEIJIAO, I just wanted to thank James for producing such a great video. The problem is that when I look at the video, all I see are the faults/issues on the layout. Luckily there's six weeks until the next show (Keymodelworld at the NEC) and therefore plenty of time to attempt to sort out all the problems.
You have a great layout Paul. I've been admiring it (online) for years so thank you for building it. If you get a chance, check out the Kfirst DCC QJs.
@@jpmoney384 The layout has moved on quite a bit since that video was made just a few months ago and I now have three of those smoking Kfirst QJ's. They will feature prominently at all exhibitions in the future
Nice to see such a full clip if this layout. Your videos are good anyway and your commentary is informative whilst not overpowering. Did 'The Boy' have a chance to operate it?
This is an astonishing project, first of all to see so much Chinees rolling stock together, stock we never see here, and to give us a realistic idea how Chinese railways are run, and I depend here on Paul's expertise. As far as I know, never seen such a thing here in the west on shows, so it's great to see so much and all well documented material together. Also the poping up photographer, details in the shops, this layout is prise winning material, perhaps the only thing that is a bit down to me, is the orange background, but that can be a sky of pollution, It would be great to see a few real photo's of the scene to compare. That is my objective view, my subjective view, and maybe I'm to much of a romantic, but it's such a depressed scene, the concrete buildings the lack of green, it could be a scene right out the film "Metropolis" and even worse it's not si-fi. That's why I have great respect for building such a layout, specially for Paul as he experienced the real scene, but it's not something that would directly appeal to me. But than again neither does the pre war and modern layouts for that same reason. Anyway great review and video as always, cheers Danny
Yes, the orange background is based on photos of the pollution that typified industrial China 20/30 years ago. I regret that it appears that I can't post them here, but we did use them to produce a unique look.
@@twickenhammrc I don't doubt it, that it must have been an over the top industrial polluted environment, and if you have seen it for real, the layout only tells half the story. And please don't get me wrong here I find your layout a masterpiece, and defiantly a first one off for western shows, it's only not my theme of choice, but I'm super glad that this project is realized. A question that comes to mind is there a big intrest in model trains in China? And is it an affordable hobby there? Well we know that they can build very decent models there as all our stuff comes from there.
@@WesternSignalman it really is. Simple in some aspects, but still truly outstanding in others. A very different location for a UK modeller to model, for instance. Nice operation of the bankers. Love time photographer popping out of the taxi.
@dibsyardshuntinglayout I think the photographer popping out of the car is my favourite cameo on the layout. The bankers add that extra bit of operation that moves it away from a parade of trains to actual operation
