Join us on a train ride from Beijing to Saint Petersburg aboard the Trans-Siberian train with stopovers in Irkutsk and Moscow. This "video" is another created from still photographs and will be the last of my old videos posted on RU-vid for a while. These and many, shorter journeys, can be found at www.Vimeo.com/tonyfleming.

Love the attention to detail, such as dubbing in ambient sounds based on the content of the photo. Really makes them feel alive!

Very nice pictures! They give me the feeling they are taken just recently. Old Beijing always stays the same. The Great Wall to the north is from the Ming dynasty. The part you visited, badaling, is built in the sixties. ;)

wonder how are the photos kept with vivid color given they were shot at 30 yrs ago!
@FlemingYachts
@FlemingYachts 6 лет назад
They received no special treatment. In fact they were rather abused because they followed me around as I worked in various tropical countries with high humidity. The slides that survived the best were filmed on Kodachrome film.

How did you create the map animation used in this video?
@FlemingYachts
@FlemingYachts 2 года назад
The slow zoom into the map was done using the Ken Burns Effect in Final Cut Pro. I believe that most editing programmes use this effect under the name of Pan & Scan. To truly animate the route I use Motion with FCP. If you have these programmes and want to know how, contact "Info" at Flemingyachts.com and leave your e-mail address.

Thank you for the time travel with poetic narration back to almost 30 years ago. More interestingly right before the official end of the soviet union. What’s your daughter Nikki been up to? I wonder if she still thinks about the trip from time to time. Again thanks for sharing it.

The route on the map is a little wrong. The city where you crossed the China Soivet Union border was Manzhouli where is a little bit west than the spot you marked.

Great trip, thank you for sharing. I am not to fond of traveling on Chinese trains (or any other transport) the tobacco smoke it's unbearable and there's no force on earth that would make them follow the rules and obey the posted signs "No Smoking" everywhere.

Nice documentary, well done as usual. One small criticism would be that I would rather see shots of the landscape without people posing in front of the landmarks or scenery. Maybe one or two would be ok . No disrespect intended but it gets a bit redundant seeing the same people posing. In contrast, allowing the picture to "speak for itself" , without a smiling tourist, in my opinion makes for a greater documentary. In short, the poser takes away from the narration and photography. Capturing the local people engaging in normal activity, however, is splendid. Just my two cents for you to keep in mind on your next still shot documentary.

i find it hard to believe all of that existed on the same land mass. Plus, will Russia have to sell Britain Lake Baikal water, when it finally destroys or exhausts its own water supplies due to immigration? You see the whole world wants to move to the tiny island in the North Sea, and it has already begun to.
