I've been doing it for 15 years, I hope that's enough experience for you. The purpose of wushu now is different than it was originally intended. However, by no means do I feel as if I am disgracing it; I am merely a practitioner, not someone who judges what is the "true" meaning of a sport. The word wushu to me has a much deeper meaning than the definition found in the dictionary (or wikipedia).
Great athleticism, but there was lucky to be 35 seconds of 'swordplay' in that routine. I miss the days of Kong Xiangdong and the like. In it's failed attempt to become an Olympic sport, Wushu simply turned itself into second-rate gymnastics.
I don't understand the JKD that you are referring to, but it seems like you need to learn a bit more from that if it "welcomes change." Wushu is changing, and it is different than what it was, but that makes it no less than what it used to be.
@ShuyuKoukin It would work against an attacker with a knife or something... if you are facing a guy with a gun, it's totally another story and no matter how skilled you think you are, you're still most probably gonna get hurt if not die.
And another thing...the fact that you have to go out and "imply" that you can hold your own is completely irrelevant to styles of sword, which is why I find it juvenile every time someone comments on a video on youtube saying a martial art is crap because it can't be used to defend yourself or whatnot. I don't doubt for one second that you can defend yourself, and in fact, I'm happy that you can, but when you have to point it out all it does is make you look immature.
Can I ask you when the hell are you ever going to use your fencing skills to defend yourself outside of competitions? Also, different sports, different styles. There's no need to get so prissy because you can't appreciate a form of art. Besides, nobody ever proclaimed that contemporary wushu was the best fighting martial art in existence...but I guess somebody is because there are so many raging comments complaining about wushu
I'M over exaggerating? You were the one complaining and moaning about it to begin with. I'm trying to explain to you that wushu is different than what you think it is. It is NOT a fighting sport like your fencing, and thus you can't compare the two. It has evolved into something more than just a martial art, it is now more like dance than anything else. You should at least be able to agree with me on that.
And I wish you would stop comparing a completely different style of art to your sacred fencing. Wushu speaks for itself, it's a sport, not a fighting style. Practitioners don't go around boasting about how they can kick everyone's asses because we can do flips and fancy movements. But I guarantee you, the amount of physical training that these wushu practitioners go through is just as much if not more than what fencers go through. Can't you learn to just respect it for what it is?
"they are entertainers, they ONLY dance" you say that like it's a sin to put your heart into something that has no practical application. So by your logic, ALL forms of dance are useless wastes of time for anybody? All form of art, song, anything that has no real "practical" use is a complete waste of time, and we should all go back to learning how to defend ourselves properly? And I dislike your need to prove so much that you can get into fights and "survive," it's very juvenile
