Paul was 20 when he joined the RAF in 1939 and became a fighter pilot. Like many young recruits he had joined looking for adventure not realising the real dangers of war. Germany couldn’t invade Britain until they had air superiority and so on 10th July 1940, the Battle of Britain began. Paul recalls his experiences of flying in one of the most important battles during the war.

I don’t see a grandfather in his 90s. I still see a young man willing to die for freedom. A DFM and MiD. A very brave man. You should be proud, as are the rest of us!

A young man who just happened to find a calling and ended up fighting the most critical battle for his country's future.

Right to feel quite proud of it! It was an achievement that saved not only Britain, but whole Western Europe and the free world as it is now. Thank you all for being so brave. We also will never forget! 🌷 Love from Holland

What a gentleman. An ace at a pivotal point in the history of the free world and yet entirely humble. I salute the memories of them all.

I would have liked to shake his hand and said Thank You. Probably wouldn't have had the nerve to ask for a signature.

That is when men were REAL MEN and took upon themselves great responsibility without asking for praise! They performed their duties with great pride! Wish I could have lived in that time period!

Amazing man. I wonder if this generation knew that their achievements for the UK wouldn't be truly appreciated until their time had long passed. Or if they were really that bothered.

Wing Commander Paul Farnes...the last living British & Commonwealth ace of that pivotal year..1940..he marked the end of a long line of extraordinary fighter pilots...we'll never see their like again.

Handsome man (inside and out). He had the RAF moustache just like the one my Dad had (also in the RAF) till the day he died. I think they all had that moustache.

For the benefit of viewers not from the U.K., “Tally Ho” is what a fox hunter shouts when he sees the fox, and the chase is on. So the RAF did the same, if a pilot saw the enemy he alerted the other pilot. And then the RAF attacked. We will remember them forever.

His mustache was barely visible in the first photo... and by the time he retired it was as thick as broom

Sounds like great fun except for the dying bit. 😂 My distant relative Guenter Seelhorst was observer in a Dornier shot down over Cornwall. That crew had a somewhat tougher landing and all died.
