I’m the only black kid in my AP History class, and when my teacher started ranting about how John C. Calhoun thought black people were ‘incompetent’ ‘stupid’ ‘slaves’ and ‘should be treated as children’…every word really hit me hard, even though I know he didn’t mean it like that. Shit hurted fr I was ready to cry.
Yea, and every time we speak about the injustice black people and immigrants have faced over centuries, and I see how far we’ve come along, my resolve gets that much stronger. And my pride grows that much bigger.
@@ankle_juice I'm sorry your history teacher acted so insensitive, hurtful and ignorant ~ even in saying this, I know it's feeble compared to the pain he inflicted and you felt, and I'm really sorry you had to be in class, being good with attendance and learning, and then that hatefully presented lecture. Damn this was so awkward to watch. I grew up in a predominantly black community and school. Most of the classes only had one or two white kids in them, including me. So whenever this topic came up 15 pairs of eyes would zoom onto the closest one. Of course I knew this was just them razzing me but damn did it feel awkward.
I'm not black, but I also cringed so hard when the teacher mentioned slavery and everyone would turn around to look at the black kids in the class. That must've sucked.
As a European and a white guy, I legitimately don't get any of this. 😅 Except the start when he was like "Nah, fuck this shit." Do love the accents though, very impressive. 👍
Same, I'm vanilla white as they come and I didn't really understand the video. Then again that might be because in our schools, lessons go more like this: nobody talks and everyone stares at the one black kid in the room while the teacher makes very horrifying descriptions of slavery, expecting the poor kid to burst out in tears or suddenly leave the room or something--or expecting them to get a 100 on all the tests about slavery because surely they know everything already because they're black. So they end up feeling uncomfortable and dread lessons on slavery and then everyone goes up to them saying "I'm so sorry to your ancestors" and stuff which just makes them MORE uncomfortable and yeah... My colored friends did not have a fun time in middle school
@@iferawhite7661 I can't relate to that either... My school/class is full of internationals. I'm Dutch and Dutch people are in the minority at my school... 😬 I literally get mistaken for a teacher all the time, which is because I'm white according to the students, I'm always the odd one out on paper, but rarely feel that way because I have some close friendships with a couple of 'm. Also the teacher calls me class Daddy, because I just so happen to be the oldest, I like to take care of people and help 'm study, as well as because in a class of 14 students, there's only 1 other guy in my class, and the teacher fought to get him transferred because I was the only guy... Don't have much experience talking to guys, never knew how to connect with them, so working on that. Why are girls so much easier to talk to? 😅 Also, back on topic, I feel like we don't talk about slavery at all in class, which is an issue on it's own... Having to do your own research on the topic seems backwards to me.
I remember back when I was learning about slavery, I was the only black kid in my group, and in the stories all the kids would make me say the n- word for them bc they didn't want to offend me 😂
That’s weird…? I don’t recall any of my classes having the N word involved. The only word close to it in most of the documentaries they made us watch… would be “negro” and like, barely. Lol I don’t think the N word should be allowed in the classroom. Glad i didn’t have to experience that
The red cowboy hat tho 😅 Most pages and channels always wanna cause division between good people when talking about stuff like this but you didn’t shed hate on others while talking about sown thing important
@Ricarlo some of the vids could be better but some vids are pretty good keep working on you acting in the therapist one when you like started saying no no it just didn't seem genuine
what the fuck are you talking about? either the entire class was black, or you can tell who he was specifically looking at. which, you can't. also, if I'm not mistaken the point of the video is that he's the only black person and the rest of the class is white. otherwise, why would he go out of his way to make a joke about the way the teacher pronounced the names of different students. the shit you consume and assume on a daily must be overwhelming.
@@bruble14 Bruh, that's also typically how it went in school. Ripped the band-aid off. Accurate as fuck too. Only black kid? Everyone turns to look at you...that's how things go
I’m sleep bro! “Then you’d listen to the words coming out of my mouth. Bitch.” Bro you had me straight dying of laughter! I was literally crying and my wife looked at me like I was crazy! I felt it bc ima smart ass who says shit like that all the time to my friends but you perfected that shit! Yo I haven’t laughed this hard over something random in a long time.
As an Asian American, the new laws in places that require Asian American history make me TERRIFIED because I've watched for years teacher fail to teach African American history
Oh jesus christ. I cannot tell you I relate personally as I'm white but I've heard horror stories from friends and classmates. Like, why y'all STARING at every black or minority kid when this topic is brought up, what do you expect them to do, start crying? Why does that matter to you? It's really alienating and kind of invasive, I imagine, so stay strong buddy, oof.
I took East Asian Studies at university and it was taught by a white guy, he did aight. I could tell he had a passion for it. But, I still wanted an instructor who identified as East Asian. Just like I purposely took Mandarin from a native speaker. I’ve learned a great deal of Black American history from a white guy, so no shade to every white instructor. However, I feel like there are enough black instructors to teach our history. Same for Chinese, Mexican, Arab etc.
Boy this takes me back growing up in the south. Every time it was time to talk about slavery, Jim Crow, segeration, almost ever teacher I had looked over to me as they spoke. I don't think it was always hostile though. I had a teacher who would occasionally pat my back as she spoke about it. I think she was trying to comfort me but that shit was really awkward lol.
I'm genuinely curious if this happens with other races, I remember being in an all black school In south Carolina but we never did a unit on slavery and I can't really remember being stared at if we did have one.
I remember in third grade when we talked about slavery during black history month everybody looked like me as if i was a slave. I was born in Nigeria where slavery and white supremacy didn't really exist so my family has no slave experiences yet they treat me like I had to flee my country because I was the grandchild of a slave. Then after class the two blonde girls came up to me and started apologizing for keeping me as a slave and I was genuinely confused, since when was I your slave??? They all assumed because black people were used as slaves a 100 years ago so was I-💀🖐🏾
@@hisaceinthehole3426 where did I assume he's enslaved lol? I was saying its inaccurate to say slavery and white supremacy weren't a thing in Nigeria. The post didn't say "slavery and white supremacy weren't a thing when I lived there or in my lifetime" he made the general statement "slavery and white supremacy didn't really exist" which is just factually incorrect if you take the most cursory look at Nigerian history.
I was literally the only black kid in my history class and my teacher was way too enthusiastic about slavery. He would be making jokes and stuff and was smiling when talking about how the slaves used to get whipped all whilst making direct eye contact with me. 😂
Bruh nah cause why’d this remind me that i had an African American history class as extracurricular and there were literally 2 white dudes in there 😭 and the teacher exempted one of them from doing the work for that class and gave him some unrelated fictional books to read about because he felt uncomfortable PLS
bruh i grew up in the philippines and I'm a half japanese half filipino, its like when we discuss the world war 2 about japan invading the philippines my classmates always gave me the stink eye like its my fault bruh im filipino too so i can relate lmaoooo
It's because they lack any meaningful experiences with other cultures or ethnicity. It wasn't until my mom started working at a nursing home that I realized those from the Philippines look vastly different from those from Vietnam or Korea. I'd imagine it would be slightly similar for other races, however the staring at you part is just plain wierd.
It's why everyone should allow their kids to experience others cultures in a positive way. If I would have lived with the other side of my family, I'd be a ignorant ass.
I was the only black person in my honors English class and when we started reading huckleberry Finn my teacher (I still love her to this day, so don’t hate on her) said that while we were reading we HAD to say the n word when it came up. But otherwise no one could say it, just while we read. This was her attempt at teaching us like we were in a college setting. Anyway when the first time came around for someone to say it every single person in class looked at me with the sorrow of Demeter when Persephone left to go to the underworld. Not a single person wanted to say it. Every class after that whoever had to say it that day would avoid looking at me.
kinda same thing happened to my class. it was a diff book but our english american teacher wanted us to read including the word (btw we were mostly asians in class) but we didnt read it and we got scolded by the teacher. we only had one black person as our classmate that time but its not like we avoided him after that tho. it prolly made him super uncomfortable tho but idk, did we seem rude or smthn? :((
My English teacher was actually really smart about it. We were reading To Kill a Mockingbird and obviously the word comes up every once in a while. She said that we can skip over it bc we don’t live in that time and it isn’t right to do all rhat

@@random_youtuber8095 Well I don't remember the 2 time exactly so I'll tell the first one. She was explaining to us how slavery started and when she was ending the session she was standing up there, started smiling looking into space and said "And THAT'S how we started slavery!" Only me and several other students caught it. We all said "what???" "What you just say??" She looked like she came back to earth and realized what she said out loud. Her smile disappeared and she said "uhhh anyways next lesson we'll move into..." She did that crap again the 2nd time but I don't remember exactly. She also was always unfair to color kids.
i remember in second grade we were learning about Abraham Lincoln and slavery, and my teacher pointed at me and 2 other black kids in my class individually and told us we wouldn’t be here right now if it weren’t for Abraham Lincoln, keep in mind we were 7 💀
Bro same but it was one of my classmates like I was the only black kid in the class they really told me I couldn't learn with them if it weren't for Abraham Lincoln
When they talk about slavery and then all the kids look at you, hug you and say “Aw I'm so glad you can come to school with us now!” Bruh don't touch me
I was the only black student in my AP US History and AP English and Language Arts class. Both had units on slavery with photo/video presentations and class discussions. It was so uncomfortable since everyone kept staring at me while they thought I wasn't looking; and at the same time whenever I was in a group, people would either talk less for fear of saying something wrong, or field every response to me since I was black. I'm anxious and shy by default, and those situations kind of heightened the emotions and tendencies that I have when anxiety kicks in. I wound up either staring down at the floor or out of the window during those classes.
When this part of the history lesson comes up it always feels weird. It gets even weirder when some books or teachers try to make the confederates the underdogs and sympathetic. Gets really weird, real quick.
@@ranjanbiswas3233 how many 13-17 year olds do you know with the capacity to put something like that together? How many teens do you know who even know how to begin the process of a law suit? Luckily for the schools, they never teach anyone that stuff
I remember in 4th grade my teacher was teaching us about slavery. During reading time she asked my friend, who was black, if she had any of her relatives in slavery. My friend didn't know how to answer that question so she started crying. Then the teacher started to apologize to her and said it was ok if she didn't want to talk about it.
That's no doubt guys for the crazy man gosh don't talk to my Hey guys and you're the money brother give you guys money to help us move how we need that man we'll probably get a pay for it
@@noaholson9047 100 years is not that far back. When I was in 4th grade I had relatives who used to be slaves, but I sure wouldn't want to break down that part of my history at 8 years old in the middle of the classroom.
In my 6th grade English class, we were demonstrating the social hierarchy, and our teacher gave the slave category to our ONE black kid, who was in a group of Hispanics.
I like it that Germany teaches kids about holocast but why that soon? I believe that no kid should learn about World War and holocast and Hitler before the age of 18.
@@ranjanbiswas3233 The major problem with that though is that there is not everyone goes to ollege, so if you have to wait until they are 18, there is a good chance they will miss out. Sure someone else could tell them about it, but that's when you get a lot of misonformation.
@@ranjanbiswas3233 Could you imagine ONLY hearing about the Holocaust until you’re an adult? It’s like never telling your child that death exists until their sister dies. Early, age appropriate education is key to developing a proper view of the world.
hmm, that was me for the cold war unit. then there's the time someone asked me if my parents were russian hackers trying to mess with the election, but that wasn't in school, at least...
if anyone is interested, Bailey Sarian started a podcast called Dark History where she talks about the more gruesome aspects of history and what really happened, mostly the topics that you aren't taught in school. There are several episodes surrounding slavery and the mistreatment of African American people, some about Asian and Mexican abuse as well, its important to know about but it is hard hitting stuff and isnnt easy to listen to all the time. if you are interested i highly recommend.
Did she talk about Black kings that sold their fellow black people as slaves too? Cuz i get the thought that slavery wasn't just a 1 or 2 race thing, and the fact that history classes sorta just dont elaborate that is stupid.
@@Nanashi20 She refers to dehumanization treatment in the USA. What's going on in Africa, or even the moon doesn't matter. Arguing that everybody did it doesn't make Europeans deeds less abusive, it's just rationalizing dehumanization and diverting accountability.
Literally facts. This is exactly what happened when we started talking about slavery and when we had to read Huck Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird where they say the n word. Teacher straight up asked me if it was okay that they said “nigg*r” and every time they read the damn word, they looked at me and every time slave(Ty) was mentioned, they looked at me. Good times.
I remember this one time, in primary school... We were doing an history class on slavery and, since I was one of the only black kid in the class AND that I was at the first row, well... The teacher used me for an example and another guy (that, FUN FACT, I really didn't get along with, lets call him Sam) being like "Ok, let's say YOU are a slave and Sam is your owner" It was akward, but honeslty, I cringe more today than back then
This is what I hated about going to a predominately white school, anytime there was a video pertaining to slavery people would look at me like I actually went through that and they’re trying to express sympathy
Anytime someone asks me “if you could travel back in time, what year would you go to” my response is always “ well… history hasn’t been too kind to my people so I only have about maybe 40-60 safe years to travel back to.”😅😢
As the only black person in my history class, today when talking about the Articles of confederation and how many representatives would be for each state, she mentioned that slaves were only worth 3/5 of a person toward the population. It was when she said the word slaves that Every. Single. Person. Immediately looked at me like I was going to have a reaction. Almost blew up at the class today
my friend was the only black person in our history class of junior year in high school, and i was the only east asian person. the students there were INCREDIBLY racist and would keep looking at her and laughing and making racist comments when we discussed slavery, and then for me they did the same thing when it came to discussing the japanese internment camps 🙃🙃 great memories
In my ap history class we had this whole list of questions we were supposed to answer by the end of class based on the lecture and whenever I raised my hand to ask a question the answer would always be 'Slavery is WRONG and we know BETTER now!' Like... sorry about your white guilt, but I'm trying to get an A. Pretend I'm a white student and tell me about the economic impact of cotton.
There’s a play called Pipeline that addresses this passive aggressive treatment of black students. The main character, Omari, attends a private school primarily attended by white kids, and in one of his classes the teacher assumes Omari has experienced the racism and violence of the book that they are reading and picks on him disproportionately to talk about the black character in a very cruel and intentionally discomforting way. Omari is uncomfortable with the biased and pointed discussion and tries to leave, and he ends up pushing his teacher out of the way. This causes him to become a target for the “Pipeline” which is the term for the unfair amount of charges and arrests that black students experience in comparison to their peers so that they can feed the prison system, a form of secondary slavery. It’s very good and touches on themes like the role of a parent vs that of a teacher, and it’s morally grey when it comes to Omari’s actions.
