Being Black in 'Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood'

Great Big Story

Remember Officer Clemmons, the policeman from "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood?" Actor Francois Clemmons was initially reluctant to take the role. Growing up in the late '60s, Clemmons didn't have a positive opinion of the cops at the time. But Fred Rogers convinced him, and Clemmons became one of the first black actors to have a recurring role in a children’s TV program.

Mr. Rogers knew children were far more sophisticated thinkers than most adults realized. The concepts, characters, and even the music had that in mind.

From a video I watched, when people live with the effects of rejection, they can't receive love from others. It's not until they stop putting up their wall that they see that people truly do care. I remember being in a treatment program and a lot of people have those walls because of past hurts. They would rather stay behind them and be safe but isolated. Helping someone with that is like slowly tearing down that wall brick by brick or stone by stone.

What Francois was referencing there, is that Fred at first told him he couldn't be on the show if he keeps going out to gay clubs and being public about it. Many years later and that exchange happened. He was talking about how he had accepted Francois as a gay man for several years now and that he loves him for being himself. Its so fucking beautiful. They go into it more in the HBO Documentary about Mr Rogers. Its fucking amazing.

Definitely. It's dark times to be a child, kids are learning from entertainers like the Paul brothers and TV shows with vapid commercialism, we're on the brink of nuclear war and have a president in America who shows negativity and vitriol everyday, rising suicide rates, people feel more divided and lonely, and people are still being denied opportunity due to colour, background and economic status. It's no wonder people are feeling more in need of a figure who represents what he did than ever.

@@gargantuanblunt7702 The definition of "religion" isn't exact, but in general it's taken to mean a social-cultural system, structure, hierarchy and organization relating to spirituality. So, if you're not really part of those things but still have faith in Christ, then that's how you can believe without being religious. But if you personally consider any spiritual belief to be religious, then I guess a more accurate way to say it would be "without being very religious", emphasis on the lack of structured practices

Mr. Rogers should never be forgotten. He talked to children like people. Treated them like they are members of society. A community. Part of his neighborhood. And yes, it was all done with such intent. Ensuring everyone experiences kindness and compassion was his life’s purpose. He fulfilled it well. He hit all the marks. He taught empathy, love, and tenderness that many don’t have the privilege to experience. Especially during those times of segregation that were so full of hatred, fear, and violence. His compassion, empathy, and kindness is so necessary for children to experience. I can only imagine how good this made black children and parents feel, to see someone taking action on their behalf in such a loving way. Let him be the blueprint; take inspiration from this💖 May his legacy live on forever💫💞

I'm glad somebody said it. And while I wholeheartedly agree, I also see a small problem. Most times when people try to act open, loving, respectful, attentive, friendly, any or all of the qualities Fred Rogers embodied,... they are often treated with suspicion and doubt, or called "creepy" It is a weird time we live in where disrespect is seen as honest, and respect is seen as deceitful. Hostility is seen as "just being real" while friendliness is seen as "being manipulative" or "there must be some nefarious motive". Everyone cheers Fred Rogers for his work with children,... but almost anyone else who tries to work with children is immediately labelled as a "P" word. The world has become far too cynical for its own good,... and I often wonder if that's because we don't have Fred around anymore.

He embodied what most people missed. All the time many people are told that you must accept Jesus' love in your heart and share that with others. But the mistake people make is focusing on the "Jesus" part rather than the "love" part. To truly share Jesus' love, you must share the LOVE with others. Show others that they are important, respect them as they should be respected, open your heart and let the warmth flow out for others to feel. For, when your heart is truly open, the warmth can never run out from it. Far to many clutch onto their heart like it is something too fragile to risk, and one crack could make it run dry. But an open heart is not a finite resource, it is an infinite wellspring if you let it be. Fred Rogers is a man who showed us all what a man with a truly open heart was like. The kind of man Jesus would want us to be. Not just talking about him, but BEING him.

I’m 31 and have had a pretty rough couple of weeks, adulting sucks. Anyway, I’ve spent the last 3 hours watching Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street clips. Sometimes it’s the basic things. It’s about remembering the good, being a little kinder, just being. I think as we get older we forget that with work and bills and life. Mr. Rogers lessons are lifelong. Thank you Mr. Rogers ❤️

Fred was flawed in his personal life life others, but I agree! I miss the ideals he represented so well in a star, and those who knew him said he was just a very caring and humble man in real life as well. Now sadly I really don't think someone like him could even be successful today. Things are so partisan now for one thing, and Fred Rogers was far too lovingly transendent for this world, but he is just the sort we need more of! Fred was actually a lifelong Republican and also a religious conservative, yet also very progressive in important ways too. But in no way would he fit well into today's Republican party, nor even into today's Democratic party. This is just sad...

He didn't see him any differently just as he is commanded, he did see it as sin just as the bible makes clear. "For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. *For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful* , and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due." davekpghpa how unfortunate that people equate a good man like mr rogers with a character which is fine with human sacrifice, innocent people paying for guilty peoples crimes, and infinite punishment for finite crimes. Mr. Rogers was a good person in spite of christianity, not because of it.

Fred Rogers: Christian (An Ordained minister in fact) Jesus said that prophets will be known by the “fruit they bear.” This is certainly true of Mr Rogers. This is what a follower of Jesus truly looks like!
@InvisiMan2006
@InvisiMan2006 4 года назад
I should remind you that Jesus took a temper tantrum and killed a fig tree for not having fruit out of season. Christianity isn't what made Mr. Rogers a great human being - he was great in spite of his religion.
@patrick7-eleven248
@patrick7-eleven248 4 года назад
@@InvisiMan2006 Thanks for your well-tempered rebuttal. It's a good biblical parallel you made there. There's a lot that could be said about that (scriptural figs and all), but if you've ever studied film interpretation, or just watched youtube vids like me, then you know that allegorical interpretation is a slippery slope. Biblical hermeneutics aside, I don't think that suggesting that Christians should strive be like Fred Rogers is off from any argument you might make yourself. And if you truly believe Christianity inherently breeds anything other than love and temperance, wouldn't you do better for Christians (and the world for that matter) to support calls of the faithful for self-reflection and re-dedication to the Christian values of loving your neighbor, forgiveness, empathy, compassion, fidelity, modesty, and humility? These are the attributes that Fred Rogers personified, despite harsh judgement from political conservatives. Yet, one cannot divorce his faith from his acts, because he was led entirely by faith. He was surely not a perfect man, and a TV persona will always be more a caricature than a picture of the real man; but Fred Rogers was a Christian, he was guided by Christ, and in the spirit of his obvious humility, I would venture to say, that he accredited his many achievements to his faith.
@InvisiMan2006
@InvisiMan2006 4 года назад
@@patrick7-eleven248 Regardless of his motivation to be a good human being, I'm glad he was and wish for everyone to be more like him. Religion in general (not just Christianity) is not necessary to be a good person, and I would argue that it presents more barriers than they break down. The values he held are not exclusive to Christianity - they are fundamental to humanity. Any atheist, Jew, Muslim, Christian, or Buddhist is capable of being like Fred - it's a shame that so few are.
