Did you know that Henry Fonda refused to talk to James Stewart for several years after the latter ratted out several Hollywood communists to J. Edgar Hoover during the industry’s Second Red Scare and that an exhibit honoring John Wayne has been removed from the University of Southern California due to the actor’s flagrant racism? While most classic films trick audiences into thinking that Old Hollywood was squeaky clean under its surface, this certainly wasn’t the case! There were plenty of classic Hollywood stars that held some decidedly racist values.

Some of the most racist stars from Old Hollywood include James Stewart and John Wayne. James Stewart may have been a nice guy in the eyes of his coworkers and most of the audience, but the actor was accused of racism by an African-American actor working on the set of one of his films. It seems that James held some backward value from his small-town upbringing, and these caused the actor to become fairly xenophobic later on in life. Besides his racism, this xenophobia was also exemplified in the fact that James helped rat out Hollywood communists to J. Edgar Hoover.
While James Stewart’s legacy hasn’t been affected much by tales of the actor’s racism, John Wayne’s has. John Wayne gave an extremely racist interview to Playboy magazine in 1971, and this interview directly resulted in the actor’s name being removed from an exhibit at the University of Southern California. Join Facts Verse as we take a look at classic Hollywood stars that were terribly racist off-camera.

I grew up during the civil rights movement Blacks didn't have access to the same education as,white students. I remember one black child saying how thrilled he was to have a new textbook..before that they were given old worn out text books. So I think John Wayne's comments meant whites should be in charge until Blacks had the opportunity to better themselves with a good education.

Woody Strode was a very good actor but he never got a lead role. He played Wayne's servant, and he played a racist role in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. No one made him do that. He got paid well for it. Hollywood as a whole was racist for many years. As for being anti-homosexual, That is not a bad thing because it is sickening. Lew Wasserman was Jimmy Stewart's agent for decades. Stewart was raised in Pennsylvania not Indiana. Stewart objected to the "uncle remis"-ish costume that was assigned to Woody Strobe (verbatim from one of his interviews). Stewart did not rat out Hollywood Communists to Hoover. James M. Stewart entered the Army as a Private and retired as a Brigadier General. He founded several companies (NetJets, for one) and worked for conservation and environmental causes. The piece on James Stewart basically calls him a racist because one actor apparently thought he did something racist (no specifics on what) on the set of one movie. That’s pretty thin to put it mildly. He was very Conservative- and proudly so - and Henry Fonda was a lifelong friend despite being very Liberal and proudly so. They both said the secret was that they didn’t talk politics. So I think you need a lot more evidence to claim all this about James Stewart.

What a badly informed hatchet job on Jimmy Stewart. In Stewart's time Hollywood was almost totally run by Jewish men. And Kirk Douglas, Walther Mathau and many more famous actors of the time said, many times in public, that these powerful Jewish men could not be trusted. But Douglas and Mathau were Jewish themselves so could not be accused of antisemitism. As for Woody Strode, he mentions in his autobiography that over the course of a few movies he made with Jimmy Stewart, he found the man to be a 'kind and gentle soul'. On the other hand, Strode thought that both John Ford and John Wayne were not overly fond of black men and were very loud in making their feelings known.

Thank you! I second that emotion. Although I get a TINY bit peeved [I'm too old to hold on to frustration from a million years ago] when Mantan Morland appears in a 1940s movie, I simply CAN'T STAND today's trash. From what I've noticed when I see a movie of today advertised, Hollywood feels compelled to keep pace with every Godd*mned new "identity" invented. There are now 72 (or 76) so-called "different" gender identities [actually, there are only TWO. Chromosomes ain't woke], and I wouldn't be surprised if Hollywood creates a movie featuring ALL 72. I never view ANY of them. In the evening, my wife and I have been trying to get through all the 4-star [IMBD-rated] 1940s. After that, we're gonna check out all the 3-star 1940s movies. Then we're going to watch the 1950s movies. A certain ideology [seems like a RELIGION!!] is ruining the culture. One wonders if we'll ever recover.

He was by then a one star General and was type rated on the B-24, B-17, B-36, B-47, B-29 and the B-57 Hustler. Quite the airforce resume and had black bomber crew members that thought the world of him. Just before his retirement he was promoted to major general. Yup, quite the impressive military record and that was more important to him than his acting career. If you read his autobiography that is quite detailed there is no mention of this nonsense. Yes, he helped Hoover but later in life was discussted at Hoovers private life and at many of the things that he did and would not have been so helpful to him had he known. General Stewart was an impressive, hardworking, loyal patriot and veteran, do not smear him with all this he said, she said BS. As almost everyone has said, it's ridiculous to judge people from 80 and even 90 years ago by today's social norms and knowledge. It turns out, the claims about James Stewart aren't even true. John Wayne's remarks in that interview, on the other hand, were woefully ignorant, even by the standards of 1971. There were overwhelmingly large numbers of highly educated black people. But most of this is akin to people who say that Mark Twain, born in Mississippi in 1835, was a racist. In 2022, sure, In his time, he was almost as anti-racist as he could get. People just don't understand that these are social ideas and they change over time. Let's hope that, a hundred years in the future, the best attitudes of our time are not considered woefully ignorant and racist by future generations that also do not understand the nature of history and social change.

Today, as in the past, they're mental patients, very likely child abuse victims, who've not yet found treatment. And they won't, b/c our society Only cares about $$$ now. Even the Richest, like a certain former "prez" who has long hero-worshipped Nazis, won't get the help they really need, b/c No One will hold rich folks accountable for their wrong doing. We can hate the horrid actions & the attitudes that perpetuate harm, while still pitying the abused children they once were. None of us is born hating other humans. That garbage is taught. We need to unteach a whole lot of people, but we can't, b/c the rich but broken ones in power won't allow it. So, we must find some way to do better by Today's children, instead: no matter their color, religion, gender identity, family wealth, origin, etc. If we truly want to to build anything "great", we need to start at the beginning, in childhood (which requires us to actually care about poor kids as more than political tools to achieve Power). We need to fund Public Ed properly & Not use subpar schools as conveyor belts feeding for-profit prisons. Nothing "great" will ever be built w/ hate, nor inequality. What we'll get instead is repeated "Gilded Ages". Gilding is merely covering garbage w/ a shiny coating so it looks nicer. But it's still Trash. I often wonder how many Einsteins were left undiscovered b/c No One who could invest in them did so. How many times have we missed world-changing discoveries, the cure for cancer, methods to save a planet for our grandkids, etc.? The racists & sexists of our world are "better" than No One. The ones I've met are actually terrible humans. They serve as a warning sign of what abuse of children eventually creates. Often, it's a monster in human form. Further proof? Over a million people didn't die of a "Hoax!". They died b/c too many uncaring people embraced the words of a cult leader who purposely stirs up chaos b/c he enjoys causing pain, and truly cares about No One. This era is Tragic. May it end w/o taking the decent portion of humanity with it.

@@ernestwalker2260 True. I pray that reincarnation is possible. In a fair universe, all racists & sexists would return in the form of their previous targets, and have to deal w/ a multitude of people exactly like their former incarnations. That may be the only way such broken souls would be able to continue evolving... through harsh experience. Oh well, one can still dream.

These are well-documented incidents of racism and bigotry by some members of Hollywood. And, tbh, I have heard of all these ppl before I watched the video. Yes, Walter Brennan DID celebrate when MLK was assassinated. He did that. To excuse his racism as “being part of the times” is a flimsy attempt to excuse his repulsive behavior.

Correct. Go back 100 years. Should everyone who did not fight for women's suffrage be labeled a sexist? Were women in the 1950s guilty of animal cruelty because they wore fur coats? Go back to pre-1970s, how many blacks were leading men in Hollywood? Was Sidney Poitier the only black capable of being a leading man? It's either that or all of Hollywood is racist or, that was simply the lay of the land in that era.
