Yeah, she talks about exuding positive energy, but if people are generally being ostracized then they aren’t going to be very positive, at least these three had connections to other people who already live in Japan, if you go to another country alone for a job, can’t connect with any of your colleagues, and you’re contractually obligated to stay in the country for a certain amount of years then I can totally see resenting the place after a while.

@@sakataginko9092 Nobita from Japan is a racist, sexist bigot himself and not exactly the most unbiased source you could have found. He blames girls for getting molested on trains for wearing their skirts too short and made a now privated video saying that Black Americans are a "danger" to Japan, citing several debunked and racist crime statistics, so I don't exactly trust his word. If someone randomly asks you on the street "are you racist?" are you going to say yes? Some racist still people exist in Japan, don't sugarcoat it with generalizations. Japan has an *extremely long* history with xenophobia, and it's definitely not quite gone yet. younger people are way more tolerant and welcoming than many older people, but Japan's aging population makes that still an issue. amidst growing concern about a drop of young people to work in the country, Japan will need to become more open to immigrants in the near future, but the Japanese government is still doing absolutely everything in their power to keep Japan a homogenous Japanese population for as long as they can because of growing nationalism in the country. Many Japanese people still aren't ready to let go of a pure Japan. you can't hear the stories of foreigners not being able to rent most apartments because Japanese still can't stand to live next to foreigners, or the story of Garnt being "randomly" questioned by police for the mere mention of the word "Thai" and say that Japan isn't even a little bit racist. Also, not entirely related, but Japan's criminal punishment system is fucked and inhumane as it is and you bet if you're not Japanese you're getting worse. Japan is a lovely and immensely interesting place with a rich culture, but it's not all roses and fucking butterflies over there.

As much as I love Japan this is one thing I just don't understand. If stuff that Meilyne narrated Americans complain about in Japan happened in US all hell would break loose and I am sure she also would complain about the stuff that are happening. When it is Japan though, we are expected to just accept everything because it is their "culture" to avoid people in busses or shoo people with the back of your hand when they try to enter your restaurant as a non japanese person and you are supposed to stay silent or else you should "go back to your own country". By that sense all that racist shit we see is America's culture and foreigners don't get to criticize America over it does that make any real sense to anyone?! Japan is a radically different country then theirs and they feel quite a huge culture shock and want to express how they feel about stuff themselves how is this beyond the line?! I tend to dislike American (some) tourists/expats the most sometimes because of how obnoxious they are or how US centered their perception of different cultures are but apparently this wasn't what she was talking about. As general advice, visiting as a tourist, and actually studying/working in a different country, is totally different experience. You will not realize how much "home advantage" you have, until you lose it and need to start from bottom. That thing about "a country need to take care of their own citizen first"? Well, you are the foreigner now. You will always be third-class there until you accumulate enough "experience" that people more accepting of you, but then sometimes you are still questioned or compared to the "real citizens" Like, everytime the boys talked about being foreigner in Japan.... Some of their experiences are actually not unique to Japan and coming to work to other places will meet the same thing.

However if we look at other places, are you going to say coca cola or iPhone are part of the Arabic society or something like that? While I acknowledge that foreigners often overestimate the homogeneity of American culture, I feel like Americans overestimate the homogeneity of European cultures, as well. For example, in my country, Croatia, I can drive for 3 hours and, while still being in my country, arrive in Istria, a place with significantly different culture and lifestyle. The architecture changes from gothic churches to roman temples and the dialect is chock-full of Italian loanwords to the point where I barely understand it. When people aren't just straight up speaking Italian, that is. I honestly felt more "at home" in Hungary, which to me just feels like (continental) Croatia on a different language setting, than in Istria. If I were to move, I'd probably go to Austria, though. Out of all of the countries I've been to, I feel like I vibe with Austria the most. Hungary looks really pretty, but I got bored of it after going there five or so times already.

@@2712animefreak "While I acknowledge that foreigners often overestimate the homogeneity of American culture, I feel like Americans overestimate the homogeneity of European cultures, as well." Yeah, it is a thing that happens both ways. I'm stating this first, since you know how internet is. Never been outside of US. I'd imagine that almost nothing is similar from one side of a country to the other. Like your example of Croatia. Three hours to other side of country and it feels like you can't even understand them. Like in France, I bet there is difficulty in understanding the people from the Breton areas compared to the Parisians. That's a whole can of worms there from the few things I read. It's just the lack of searching for this level of knowledge of other places that usually happens is all it is. I don't hate people that assume America is nothing but burger country, because there is some truth to it. As all stereotypes have somewhere they come from. But hey! European countries aren't really that homogenous. You can find Arab, Turkish cliques in bunch of big cities in Germany as well as Asian communities. Bavarian accent is sometimes very hard to understand for people from Hamburg for example, it's considered closer to Austrian (most of Germany lives on rivers that flow north, Austria and most of Bavaria are on the Danube which flows east). Japan as well, it's a 125 million people country. There's massive cultural differences. Much of the south has sub tropical climate, there's almost jungle like places on Kyushu. The accent variations as well, Kansai accent sounds a bit funny to "standard Japanese" speakers (aka Tokyo). The touristy areas like Kyoto will have very different feel to northern Japan which doesn't receive as much tourists. Okinawa will almost be a foreign country, the island is significantly influenced by American military bases that take up much of the islands and their people aren't exactly Japanese, but Ryukyuuan with history of assimilation under the Japanese Empire.

I'm sure she's been empathetic to people who complain to her, but I wouldn't blame her making that remark if she's been hearing those complaints so much that her head spins. The thing to note though, is that unlike America, Japan is still a very homogenous society. So as sad as it is, the possibility of being discriminated against is something that foreigners should have been aware of before moving here. I was part of a random selection of kids to trial out the first ever 'computer science' lesson in our high school back in 1980/81.. it consisted of a small box TV, a landline you actually had to dial up, and a long roll of paper in a printer.. it wasn't as fun as I'd hoped.. but not having internet and mobile phones was actually cool in other ways; we were rarely ever indoors,.. friends turned up at the door randomly, (we didn't even use the landline to call each other unless it was important, cause we didn't want to run up our parents phone bill).. We had the music! Hours of listening to the radio, trying to tape our favourite songs on cassette recorders.. or saving up to buy a 'single' or LP (alongside a paper bag of sweets and weekly teen magazine.. hoping it would have a poster of your favourite band inside to hide the bedroom wallpaper not of our choosing).. we had youth clubs, cinema, teen discos, roads safe enough to cycle on,.. but the music played a big part, and it evolved fast and furiously, as did the fashion!... if we had spare pocket money we could hop on a train 'destination anywhere' so long as it was a return ticket within our budget 😂 .. on rainy days we'd spend time colouring our hair with food dye, driving our parents mad with loud music and thumping ceilings from the latest dance craze, and ripping up our clothes trying to create that next fashion trend 🙈😂😂 Good times!.. well, just 'different' times, it certainly wasn't all good 😔... everything is a shade of grey.
