I became a Christian as a teenager in Okinawa. There were no churches near my village. I had to sneak into an Army base through a hole in the fence by a sugarcane field to go to church.
I am a Chinese Christian. I invited my Japanese friend who was nearly 70 years old to our church . He came to church for the first time, but he burst into tears hearing the music there. He could not explain the reason and I told him that Holy Spirit was working in his heart. Just now I sent part of this video to him through Wechat. May Jesus Christ bless Japan and our brothers and sisters there.

As a Christian living in Indonesia, I completely agree with what that one guy has said. A lot of Christians in Asia involve themselves with a "western sort of Christianity", and though that's completely fine (I am part of very westernized, "American evangelical style" church myself), it creates the misconception and false sentiment that Christianity is this foreign, western, religion, incompatible with local cultures and traditions. In reality that is far from the truth. Christianity is about Jesus! He came to save everyone! Doesn't matter your race or ethnicity! We Asians must take the initiative to develop a "localized" version/style of Christianity. One that keeps Jesus in the centre, but also keeps our local cultures and traditions alive. There are more than one ways to praise and worship, and establish a relationship with God. Adhering to Western-style Christianity is one way, but not the only way.

We often mistake religion with faith. Religion is man made rules to try to reach God. Faith is Gods free gift to man. No one can come to Jesus without faith. God draws us to Jesus, who alone is the way the truth and the life. Apart from Him, there is separation from God.

One reason Christianity became big in Korea is because missionaries helped establish schools to educate the peasants. Before that only nobles were able to read. Christians set up schools and taught Koreans to read their very own language.
South Korea is one of the few countries in the world where Christianity and the Roman Catholic faith was spread first by their own people, and they sought for the missionaries. In other countries, missionaries came first, and only then the faith was spread.
@@juch3 Yep you’re right! During occupation Christianity became a symbol of Korean patriotism too because Christians refused the state mandated worship of Shintoism.
Very interesting video. As a half french half japanese guy living in Tokyo, who also accepted Christ few weeks ago, I can confidently say that Christ can solve many problems in this country (suicides, promiscuity, alcohol addiction...). The thing is, it's not a matter to join a new "religion", but to start to develop a long lasting relationship with Christ (by reading the bible, prayer, etc.). I used to love worldly things like most of the people here, but the love of Christ really changed my heart and the way I see the world. May God bless you abundantly.
Well said! True Christianity is not a religion, its a way of life! The things currently hindering Christianity from spreading through Japan has never stopped the Church over the past 2000 years, because the Spirit of the Lord is alive and active. That’s why today in places like Iran, Iraq, China, etc where Christians are greatly persecuted, the Church thrives underground. It’s only a matter of time before the Spirit of the Lord breaks through Japan again and the people of this nation undergo revival. When those days come, Japan will never be the same again! It will be transformed forever!!

Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. And terrorists (puppets of the Antichrist) who misinterpret verses, out of ignorance and political motivations, and take them out of historical context (just like radical atheists do by the way) don't help either. Thank you very much for your time. First of all, if you have any questions regarding Islam and yourself, just open the Quran randomly, and you will find the answer in front of you, like a miracle and a sign from God. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.” (2:136 / Translated by Community) Salam (Peace) ------------------------------
Hi I’m Christian too , I’m baptist and evangelical, and I’ve been wondering what is an Orthodox Christian. Because I always see you guys calling yourselves the best/true Christian denomination. Do you guys have like something against protestants? And is Orthodox different from Catholic?
@NEXTしょう。。。 I understand the concerns from a variety of perspectives however if we distinguish the convention from the concept this verse can be understood to mean 'everyone will bow to the truth', which is not such an ominous statement
@NEXTしょう。。。 Sounds ominous, right? Basically the translation is: Throughout the world, no matter what language people speak or who they are they will be able to know that God is amazing That's how I interpret it, using English
Some actually either kept the faith in secret or went to the Philippines as refugees. Many missionaries were Spanish/Filipino friars. It was a sad time being presecuted..
This God of yours took my long time friend away. We don't talk at all because of your God. After his conversion he kept on pushing myself to accept Jesus, even gifting me books about Jesus. Why do Christians do that? Why do missionaries help people in the name of God not in the name Humanity, if you guys are so concerned about people's misery, help them directly like the Sikhs do, why put god in between your service.
@@StylesEste I guess you are from western side of sphere, where people hold liberal view which says human is by nature rational, doesn't that contradict your 1st statement. I am not a liberalist though. Missionaries helping people- the way I see it as a way to convert people by helping them when they are in need, tagging it as 'God has send us(missionaries) to save you, you are his child' and so on. Why can't you guys be like Sikhs. They help people but they don't lure them to follow their religion. My personal experience: I enrolled my kid to a local christian school as it was in close proximity with regular school fee and etc. My kid did well hence after few years they came up with a proposal that the school will take care of my kid and his education till highschool and even recommend for university IF I ACCEPT JESUS. Now tell me how should I take it, do I consider myself blessed or should I consider it a bribe. Later I came to know that they even gave my kid a christian name George. I immediately cut ties with that school. Now my relationship with my kid is strained. He thinks I'm the one who separated him from his friends. Why does your God do this to me. Dont say that he is testing me. First my friend now my own child I now begin to hate your religion altogather. In my culture God is formless, shapeless entity, God exist just for the sake of argument for worlds creation and all that. No person is close to or far from God. Unlike priest and fathers who have greater access to God than others. We dont pray nor do we belive that there is something called God's will. Nature nourishes us , gives us life when the time comes it takes away. We are not here to serve God. We are not a slave of God. We love every human on planet and nature not because we see God in them, its because he/she is the product of nature. I think i have enough knowledge to understand world why do i need Christ or other religion. If Christ sympathizes with us and pray for mercy, then why do Europe has to go through Dark Age and 2 world wars, 30 years war and so on. Was the God not satisfied with Christ's Pray. You are my brother as my culture treats all human equally as a fellow human being and a friend unless you're a threat to my existence. I don't need a permission from God nor God told me to believe in that.
I was just one of those people, but the Almighty saved me and I found Christ on my way and now I am happy and I want to serve the Lord forever and always.

@@collectiveconsciousness5314 Actually it is touched upon in multiple books and it is sad that a historically Christian city was chosen to be the place to drop the atomic bomb. @@selman6330 I just finished "Genesis in Japan" by Thomas Dabbs. Its about the author's experiences teaching the KJV bible at a university in Japan and how the students responded to it. Personally I found it unfocused and full of rambling but still read the whole thing. I found it rather boring and didn't learn much other than the author thinks the Bible is bunk. If you want to read a good book about Christianity in Japan I suggest "Silence" or "The Final Martyr"s both by Shusaku Endo. He is an excellent Japanese author and his fiction is world renowned. Also suggest "Overcoming Barriers to Evangelization in Japan" by David Lu or "From the Rising of the Sun" by James Philips if you are thinking of evangelism.
I'm Catholic, and when I was a kid, we were taught about the first Japanese to become Christians, about how they held on to their faith despite being persecuted by the Shogunate. One anecdote I remember was that after Sakoku ended and Catholic missionaries returned to Japan, they were shocked to still find Christians there, who were still practicing their faith exactly as it had been taught to them by the Jesuits, without changing anything or splitting off into different sects, even after hundreds of years of isolation. Pretty much any mention of Japanese Christians from back then in Catholic literature portrays them with a great deal of respect and points to them as an example of what we should strive to be like.
@Bruno Menezes Just because the government supported the Nazis doesn't mean the whole population did. There were actually some villagers/small towns/far off islands who did not want to contribute to that sh*t. Even if they did contribute there were some Japanese officers who treated natives from countries they took over with respect. Not everyone was like that but that doesn't mean they all followed Nazi ideology

@Ephaistos Vanguard I believe I will be in Heaven with God. The bible tells us if we truly believe and repent, God will give us his Holy Spirit so we can be reunited with Him when we die. The Holy Spirit is amazing, you'll be able to feel peace, love, happiness... if you believe, love God and have His Spirit in you, rest assured you will see Him one day. -John 5:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life." -Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” -Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. I hope I answered your question!

That's funny. Now that I think of it, the Lord did found His church upon St. Peter (the rock), and is still alive to this day (the Catholic Church). Moreover, when Christ resurrected, the angels rolled the stone away.
Seeing sincere Christians talk always brings joy and comfort to my heart. Listening to these wonderful Japanese Christians gave me great joy. Thanks for making this Nobita.
I don't hear about it on the videos. Do Japanese Christians know the power of prayer, praying the rosary every day and the daily devotion and prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ.
But the hour is coming and is now here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. - John 4:23-24 There is no need to pray in a specific way other than trusting in Christ. One of the most beautiful things about Chritianity is that it can't be taken away from you. You can pray, any time and anywhere, and nobody has to know that you're doing it. A relationship with God is one of the most personal you can have for that reason. I also love how if you have internet, it's easy to look up studies. I personally watch Shepherd's Chapel because of their translations of Ancient Hebrew being more modern, and Pastor Murray (a U.S. Marine from World War II) having been a student of the Masoretic Text and translating the Aramaic, Greek, and Hebrew properly, and that's just one wonderful church as an example who's message reaches across the entirety of Earth. Thank you for posting such a beautiful video as always, Nobita from Japan! Your videos are always well put together and a joy to watch even here, deep in the heart of Texas.
I disagree bob, look at all these Muslim converts, most of them are Christians, so I don’t understand, maybe it is suppose to be in a different context?
@NEXTしょう。。。 Generally, religion is a part of someone, for instance, if I wear a cool sweater to the park other people will see that sweater and buy a similar one. What I mean is that the spread of ideas is inevitable and sometimes good, it allows for more empath, depth, and experience. The only way to avoid this is an extreme totalitarian rule.

@@atiam2906 I'm not OP, but my guess would lie not exactly in spirituality, but an imprinted code that is written in its people. However, without humility they can be all for not. The defeat of pride is always the key. That's just my guess though.
As a normie white Christian in Canada, it’s always so interesting to see what Christianity is like in other countries, and what it’s like being the minority religion over there. I feel like over here in North America it’s so widespread that most people who call themselves Christians only do so for political reasons, or it’s just the religion they pick to label themselves as because it’s most familiar. Modern Japan doesn't really have religion. Even buddhism and shintoism acts of worship and prayer are treated more like tradition than religion where most people only believe in the main idea and core concepts and thats it.
no. japan so damned religious, their own religion has gone invisible. it's part of their culture. so many of their mores and norms have religious roots from matsuri to visiting temples before exams or on the new year, to hanging charms on bamboo trees, heck even respecting the emperor has religious roots.etc. etc. etc. they don't know their religious because they're AFRAID to say they are. because of that cult cyanide gassing back in the 90s. japan is the land of "it is known" as it was put by the Dothraki in Game of Thrones. that's religious thinking. they're so religious they're blind to it.
I think this is because as a general conception religion is seen as something someone has or doesn't. I'm not saying everyone is religious but everyone has meaning, identity and purpose, religion is often what people will outlet that through. So, you could say Japanese 'religion' but it wouldn't be entirely true because religion means a certain practice (which doesn't happen in Japan).
Japan moral society is not doing to good without our Creator's Manual, the Bible. They are losing their way in the dark. Just remember that Catholisism is NOT Biblical Christianity, only those who has the Bilbe (old translations) as guidelines are true Christians. No one is forcing you to surrender your life to God, our Creator. But after death all of us will stand before Him and we will want to prepare for that meeting. It goes like this: You and I broke Gods law. All people act against their conscience, because its in our nature to sin. All people deserve hell for what we've done, and for how we have all contributed to this fallen world. But God, who is rich in mercy sent His Son to die on our behalf. He took our punishment, and rose again to defeat death. By turning to Him in repentance , and believing in Him, that He is God, and that He died for your sins, you have His promise of salvation from the wrath of God that will one day bring justice to the world. For God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that you turn away from wickedness so as to be saved.

Be blessed brother, I pray that we are counted worthy to be in the sight of the Lamb.
I am happy to hear that at least some of the people interviewed found fulfillment in accepting Christianity. Considering that Christianity is not as mainstream compared to the United States of America, Japanese Christians are likely to be more authentic than some American Christians because you actually have to place yourself in a situation where fellow citizens might ridicule you for it. In the U.S., there are no real consequences for becoming a Christian because it is part of the culture. But, the caveat is that some people in the U.S. who call themselves Christians might be very far from what Jesus Christ taught.
Not just the US but worldwide, there hasn't been an agreement on what Christianity actually is since the very foundation of the faith, it leads to a whole lot of misunderstandings and persecution. When you're dueling with other people for what you perceive to be objective truth with eternal ramifications the things you end up doing beggar belief and defy human ethics.
Exactly my words. Well said. We can say all nations come with own sets of good and bad, and in places like Japan along with the struggles of being minority, comes the advantage of your faith being real and people seeing it clearly, without all the pitiful things people in the west do in the name of Christianity, whether it is because of fake faith or lack of wisdom and concern. Not to mention the freedom of not having 1000 denominations, politicized religion and all other schemes that just insult God honestly
American Christianity is very very different than Christianity in Europe too. The guy who was talking at the 30 minute mark was pointing out the difference in culture between Japan/America. Most modern missionaries are evangelical americans that are very loud and outgoing which can be off-putting to some europeans, and many Japanese.
@Manannan anam That's not true, there are all kinds of denominations in Japan, those you mentioned are just the most aggressive when it comes to recruitment. Also, why would there be missionaries in America lol
I think the Catholic Japanese novelist / writer Shusaku Endo described that at first he thought of God as very foreign(originally had an image of a strict old testament God who punished or caused floods to eradicate immoral people) despite his mother being a Catholic. He describes that through a lot of doubt and struggles he found Jesus's image a more softer image with love and rediscovered and established his faith in God. One of his novel 'Silence' was made into a movie covering the prosecution of Christians in Japan.

Thank you, Nobita. I'm a Catholic Christian, and I find this very wholesome! For anyone interested in digging into the final question a bit more in depth, I would encourage you to read Toyohiko Kagawa's 'A Grain of Wheat,' in which, through a semi-autobiographical novel he explores how Christianity doesn't destroy Japanese culture, but brings out the best aspects of Japanese culture and elevates them to a new level.
Absolutely! Christian values, if applied prudently, could transform Japan’s indigenous culture: enhance its shining features and purify its dark shadows.
I haven't read that but I'll share my hypothesis that i got from my english teacher: Catholics don't see the point in spending energy, time and money to prepare for punishing people (subconsciously, not logically) so corruption and nepotism isn't eradicated and in most cases isn't even seen as a problem. Also the contact with God is mediated by a precise doctrine which has precise answears to all questions, and like Plato used to say, if you're convinced an answear exists, arriving at that conclusion yourself isn't seen as "worth it". Overall, if you're born in a moderately wealthy family, find a good enough job and are adamant in your faith, you're pretty much settled, there's nothing to prove, no point in thinking about the greater good or honour, you'd rather retire at 55 than work until you're 65 to get one more house or car.
Man, i don't usually write comments in english but i have to say that this video, as a christian aspiring to go to Japan, is surprisingly inspiring and encouraging. THANKS NOBITA FOR THE GREAT CONTENT GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL PEOPLE IN JAPAN!
@Natanael Kohler not exactly in mexico (a very catholic country bytheway ) spaniards mixed catholicism with local beliefs I mean aztec deitys demanded human sacrifices, the opposite to Christianity www.mexicolore.co.uk/aztecs/gods/virgin-of-guadalupe-and-tonantzin
You're doing God's work right now, and may not even know it. It is so great to highlight the good that is being done in the name of Jesus. It transcends all boundaries :) I thank God for you Nobita! Good to see how brothers and sisters around the world are being brought into the light and help one another despite the darkness... May we do more to bring more light and wellbeing to all who are around us, even in comments on RU-vid :)
Hearing other people's story just warms my heart. As a Christian, these people are my family, my brothers and sisters, even though we do not speak the same language. What a beautiful video
As a person who grew up christian I think you did an excellent job approaching the subject respectfully. It's a admitadly complicated.. unique world of symbolic language, imagery, and practical tradition.. so it would have been easy for you to tell whatever story you like.. instead you let the people you spoke with tell their own story from their perspective. I think that's great. One if my favorite videos from you
Canadian evangelical Christian here: Great video! I would echo a lot of the other comments here -- that primarily, authentic Christianity is one's relationship with Christ as Lord and Savior. If I could ask any question for those pondering Christianity in Japan, though, it would be this: why not evaluate Christianity based on its logical foundations and claims i.e. solid Christian apologetics? This would immediately overcome many obstacles i.e. if Christianity is true, then it does not matter what culture/background/politics we have! It is not 'western' at all (sadly, in fact, western politics has sometimes *distorted* authentic Christianity). We should believe and practice Christianity if it is *True* -- not because it is 'popular/trendy' or 'western' or 'feel good' or anything else. That being said, the benefits of accepting Christ are beyond measure -- sometimes in the here-and-now, but for sure in Eternity :)
Had to subscribe to your channel. Being a Nikkei American living in Japan, your videos are great at preparing and clarifying different aspects of my ancestral culture. Your contents are thought provoking and extremely creative with topics most people don't even think about until they witness it themselves as something interesting or a problem. Thank you for the time and thoughtfulness of your contents and videos.
Wow Nobita, this is fantastic! As a Japanese Canadian Christian, this documentary speaks to me on so many levels. I appreciate all the work you put into this, from the bottom of my heart :)
Bless you nobita for this I've been looking for this, I'm a Christian, learning Japanese, thinking of moving there,so I've been curious about Japanese Christians. I believe there'll be a great revival in Japan, very soon
@Acid Daddy no sir.. I'm purely African (Nigerian) I just love the Japanese culture, and as a born again Christian, I'm praying for the salvation of souls there, that's all.
I truly agree with this some employers discourage or do not allow us to take a day off on Sunday for church service, the same thing happened to me during a job interview, I as a Chinese Christian in Malaysia, specially requested a day off on Sunday and I got rejected, who would have known God blessed me with a better job as a teacher rather than a mere cashier girl.
