I'm Nigerian American as well, born and raised in the US. My parents are from Nigerian and went to the US to pursue an education here. I'm truly blessed, and have the best of both worlds! I always get the stupid comments of Ppl saying I'm not Nigerian. so that's why I say that my parents r from there and I'm Nigerian American from the US

I "like" this..My late father was educated in America MSc and PhD in America but decided not to stay back despite certain "overtures" by the then U.S. government for his own reasons. That was his generation. And although I have direct relatives that are first generation immigrants like your parents, I also have friends who are first generation immigrants of MY generation. ( became citizens after marriage etc sometime after the turn of the millennium). This "conversation" is very relevant today because we "progressive" Nigerians have to really define ourselves, because I feel that the solution to Nigeria's complex problems lie within Nigerians living in America of this generation and the next. Meaning Nigerian American are very relevant. I have never been to America ( two of my direct siblings visit America constantly, one an Olympic Gold Medallist and one works with Google..I even have a teenage niece in an American high school..while both parent are in Nigeria) but my interest in Nigerian Americans is because of what I believe the progressive Nigerians "oh"!! can do for both worlds and even for African Americans..and even Americans ( as we are known to do) as a whole. But it's a long journey......

Hi from England and Saudi Arabia! Thanks for telling us about yourself! It's great to connect with fellow human beings around the world and share our thoughts, experiences, feeling and perspectives. I have some questions, if I may? 1. How does it make you feel to be "African American" or "Nigerian American", as opposed to just 'American'? What benefit do you get out of the prefix or subcategory? 2. Do you recognise any potential harm to a nation or issues that might arise with the use of such terms? 3. Are you sure that pride is an appropriate word/emotion in relation to an attribute we have no influence over?

Yes, you can be both African and American. Being AFRICAN is an ethnic identity, but being American or Nigerian is a nationality thing. Many people (Americans) confuse these! There is no such thing as African-American ethnicity! You are either AFRICAN or you are not, but you can be both African & US national, depending on your background & history! Just as you can be both European and American at the same time as well , depending on your origin. Nigerians are allowed to have dual nationalities, ethnicity is about your DNA, origin.... it’s shocking to hear some black, American citizens say they are not African? How much more confused can people be ?

The video was very insightful. That said, here are some healthy (and healing) starter tips for African Diasporans in the United States: 1. drop the term 'Black American' (or any similar ideological variant, like FBA or ADOS) all together; 2. create consensus on an African/Bantu-derived linguistic term to re-define the group, 3. encapsulate all your experiences, achievements and ethos narrative under the new ethnic group name such that a new chapter is created for your progress, 4. drop all individual slave names and thus, research and legally take-back African (Bantu) names, 5. explore and embrace Ubuntu as an African philosophy of humanity (and human kindness), 6. use and engage Africa as a multi-faceted resource, e.g., naming of Black organizations in the United States with African words; setting-up business links with African nations; touring African nations; pursuing dual-citizenship in African countries; plus more. The aforementioned collective set of ideas is inexpensive, but rich in content regarding healing, mental health and positive cultural energy. It will set (or re-set) the groundwork/foundation for healing and solutions in multiple areas, e.g., male-female relations; community building; conflict management; economic empowerment, etc. Items 1-6, if implemented, will help the Black Diaspora from being a continued footstool for the empowerment of wazungu (white folks). Respectfully, my training and research informs me that all ethnoracial groups of people should identify themselves from a word or phrase which linguistically connects (or references) them to their ancestral origin geospace. Regarding the African Diaspora peoples in the United States, a KiSwahili root would make sense. Ex. Maboma (mah-boh-mah) or Watu wengi (also, Watuwengi) which translates as 'many villages' or 'many peoples', respectively, in context to the fact that Black people were brought to the United States from many communities, villages and areas across Africa. In fact, the geoorigin of the African Diaspora throughout the so-called Americas collectively represents the Senegambia-DRC-Angola tri-node region+Mozambique area+Madagascar, a wide swatch territory which I have coined as Kijiji Kikubwa ('big village' in KiSwahili). The words that I mentioned (Maboma; Watuwengi) as possible group names for Black people in the United States are just selected examples; there are many more terms which can be derived. However, the main point (to be reiterated) is that Black people should name themselves from the use of African languages as a resource. I look forward to reading response comments to my views. (from Baruti, DARC analyst, ufundi320@yahoo.com)

Black Americans already have an ethnic group … which has existed for centuries, why change it to a new ethnic group name, that is unfamiliar and has no attachment to us. Why should a Nigerian change a name that's been in their family for generations to adopt a Bantu name, they are not Bantus.
@ufundi1
@ufundi1 2 года назад
@@Flowers4848 Actually, Bantu is generally a geo-linguistic language umbrella for about 1000 African languages which bear some similarities. In fact, the famous Bantu migration of 5000 years ago where people who spoke Proto-Bantu started in what is today Nigeria. Baraka na safari njema (blessings and safe journeys).

@@ufundi1 Nigerians are not Bantu. The Bantu migrations started from the Congo Basin, Southern Cameroon, Gabon and Angola. Kiswahili is spoken in Tanzania, Kenya, a little in Uganda, Eastern DR Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. The people taken to the Americas were from West Africa and west Central Africa. They are not Kiswahili speaking areas. Regarding Madagascar and Mozambique, the people enslaved from these areas were taken to the Middle East not to the Americas. Some were also taken to South Africa by the Dutch East India Company.

Western or European education is neither better or worse: the major difference is technology (computer or consistent water, power supply etc) other than that the basic education concept are about the same. I will give you one example: Nigerian educated Medical Doctors migrate to the US has little or no difficulties passing medical board exams as well as other disciplines. Based on the examples I have enumerated, I will say that there are very little differences. The obvious differences are facilities.

"At the end of the day you are a Black person walking down the street......" No No No. You have to do what Nigerians do ( Technology, Science and Applied Mathematics etc )and SPEAK Nigerian Languages as we (Nigerians) speak those languages to " fit in" and be called Nigerian.. Nigerians are NOW producing STRONG Cars, STRONG Buses............................, etc at an Igbo Car Manufacturing Company at Nnewi, Nigeria. Get a Google Search page and type in with your Computer or Cell Phone KEY BOARD: IVM or Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Nnewi, Nigeria. If you cannot do ( Technology, Science and Applied Mathematics etc ), then "RESPECT" the Nigerian Igbo Tribe because they CAN do it. Be HONEST, the People with "Technology" today have MORE Dignity in the World than those WITHOUT Technology. White People have Technology. Each of their High Technology (High-Tech. ) Companies makes PROFITS in Billions of Dollars every year. Look at Korean Samsung of yesterday making almost $200 Billion every year (since the Year 2014 to the present ) in PROFITS from their Cell Phone and other Electronics products like Computers, Video Cameras etc. Japanese Mitsubishi, Fuji, and SONY each averages $60 Billion every year. Japanese Car Manufacturing Companies ( Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, etc ) EACH makes PROFITS in Billions of Dollars every year. ________________________________ African People CANNOT identify as "BLACK". We identify by our African Country of origin and possibly with the Tribal name attached. _______________________________ Be very HONEST please....................................Black Americans DO NOT do Technology, Science and Applied Mathematics Black Americans DO NOT VALUE Technology, Science and Applied Mathematics. They (Black Americans) CANNOT represent African People that value Technology, Science and Applied Mathematics etc..........................and we( Africans ) will NOT follow Black American way of living or be defined or identified as "Black" because that term "Black" puts Black American NEGATIVE Stereotypes on whoever identifies as "Black". They will "brag" on being given a $300 million Music Recording Contract by a Big Company like SONY Records, RCA Records, Werner Bros, ARISTA Records.................etc when they will get a tiny percentage of the contract as income. They CANNOT study Electrical and Computer Engineering and produce Compact Discs and have a Recording Company.They ( Black Americans ) even define Blackness as engaging in VIOLENT Gun Shooting behaviour, being "Loud", being able to "Steal". Identify by your NATIONALITY or TRIBE/CULTURE. Examples ( Nigerian/ Igbo Tribe, Kenyan/ Kikuyu Tribe, Ethiopian, Trinidadian, Dominican, Guyanan, Jamaican, Belisean, Brazilian, Panamanian, Venezuelan, Colombian...............etc) . Because we "KNOW" African People's behaviour by their Nationality and Culture.

Nigerians and all peoples of AFRICAN parentage or ancestry are all Africans. They can be Mexicans, French, British or Americans at the same time. It’s not a Nigerian thing? Black Americans who say they are not Africans are simply ignorant or confused about their true identity! Some think that it is not consistent to be American and African at the same time, but that is the reality for many people today! The origin of the black race is Africa; and history has helped to explain the diversity of the African diaspora, but there are still individuals and groups who are yet to come to terms with their ‘Africaness’, due to the effects of colonialism and neo- colonialism that many black peoples of the world (including Americans) have been subjected to for so long; but we must begin to learn who we are, and not continue to wallow in denials with such arguments as portray self-hate rather than knowledge.

I don't care what anybody says, if both of your parents came from Africa, and you are born in America, you are a "NATURALIZED CITIZEN" of America, period. When your family happens to go back HOME, that is when they are full citizens! Anyone can SOJOURN to other countries, but that doesn't mean children born in that country are 100% a citizen of that country! Think, think, think people! Even when any one of the parents is a citizen of another country, the blackness and the culture of the blackness takes over as African! An American woman married to a Nigerian man, the children are Africans regardless of what color is the woman! Conversely, An American man married an African woman, still the same as an African. The bloodlines are so strong! I have German-born children, children born of a German woman and father Nigeria, see them, they are almost white! guess what they regarded themselves as, NIGERIANS! So a man born in German has children by an African woman, of course, who do you think would claim? Nigeria! It is fact of life, my sister. Thank you for keeping rooted in your culture!

Your parents made a MISTAKE for NOT teaching you the Igbo Language. You should START NOW to learn the Igbo Language and Culture and SPEAK it fluently without American ACCENT otherwise you CANNOT fit neatly in both "Worlds" as you say. MY POINT: Speak Igbo like the Igbo People speak it, that makes you FULLY Igbo AND speak English Language as it is spoken here in the USA with American ACCENT. Then you have the BEST of both Worlds. If you DO NOT speak Igbo Language like Igbo People speak it, ( WITHOUT American ACCENT ) you will have difficulty fitting in with Igbo People. Just go to your Family home in Nigeria and live there for ONE to FIVE years, then come back to USA.

Those that DO NOT speak their Tribal Language are LOST Members of the Tribe. If you DO NOT speak Igbo Language like the Igbo People speak it, RESPONSIBLE Igbo Men will NOT marry you. You end up with OTHER People but Igbo People. It is always GOOD to bring your Children born abroad, FLUENT in Igbo Language, English Language and possibly a THIRD Language. It is BEST to have Children learn ( Swahili ( spoken widely in East Africa ), the Structure is similar to Igbo Language, Yoruba Language, Hausa Language ( Hausa has its complexity or should I say its LACK of organisation ) , more complex or more unorganised than English Language. Examples: He/She is going to School ( Eglish ) O na eje na Uno akwukwo ( Igbo ) A na kuenda Shuleni ( Swahili ) Hausa has two different ways to say this depending on whether the person is Male or Female or a Group of People. Ya na zuwa da Makaranta ( for a Male person ). Ta na zuwa da Makaranta ( for a Female ). Future and Past sentences in Hausa are some thing else.

Just learn the language VERBS, NOUNS, PRONOUNS, PREPOSITION, ADJECTIVES, ADVERBS, then PRESENT TENSE (simple) and PRESENT CONTINUOUS, PAST TENSE (simple ) and PAST CONTINUOUS, FUTURE TENSE etc. Imagine a Kenyan or a White Person that speaks Igbo Language like we Igbos speak it. You will respect him or her more. Correct? Or if you speak Spanish fluently to Hispanics.

But Africa is a continent not a country, Nigerian American is the appropriate way to identify yourself, Blacks that been in America for over 700-1000 yrs in USA are just Black American, the word African American is a tricky way to take away American Negroes identity from being Aborigines, makes no damn sense..its rubbished.

100% SABRINA I'm Igbo. A proud one for that matter. And that's enough for me. I don't need any other vilification. Keep deceiving yourself. I'm 100% satisfied being an African man. Stop this Jewish propaganda!

Your ignorance can not be excused nor be ignored. Go and research inventions and developments. Then you will answer your ignorance question. They're so many Africans in all spectrum of tech development. Their names may not be on the product but Africans are major contributors of today's technologies. Therefore your question is biased on ignorance. Most modern invention are a collection of ideas of so many people including blacks.
