Hi, guys! I am going to talk about, on my first video for the week, how being self-employed is safer than having a job.

I'm Eric Wroolie. I make apps. And I run Overpass.
Overpass is a mobile app development agency based in Oxfordshire in the UK. I started it back in 2004 before there were even app stores!
Now, the company is myself and a small team of designers and developers. We outsource what we can and try to keep costs low, but I still code here and there.
My apps have been downloaded tens of millions of times globally and I have lived the ups and downs of being an app developer.
I started creating videos back in 2014 and have created over a thousand videos since. If you can't tell, I can talk about apps all day. We also talk about running a small business and self-improvement on this channel.
If you need an app created, my company can help you.
Or...
If you are an app developer, like most of the viewers on this channel, I hope our shared experiences will help you out too. There is nothing more satisfying than making money from apps.
If you haven't subscribed, we'd love to have you.
Subscribe, say hello in the comments, and . . . smash that like button :-).

I have been self-employed for the past 10 years. I've had times I made good money and I had times no made money, in this last situation is very stressful, it is necessary to be resilient to don't quit. Now, I'm passing through one of these bad times, it's so hard. Hopefully, I saved money in my good times, so now I can start everything again.I won't give up. Cheers

I have now almost 2 years of professional experience as an Android developper. I always tried my best to get some sideline contracts. I like the "safe" money of my 9-5. But the extra hussle money is even nicer, i'm only 22 maybe one day i'll go full self employed ! You're an inspiration thanks for the content

Not only has being self-employed worked out better, but I find that there is more work during economic downturns. Companies tend outsource to save money when they lay off staff.

I believe its all an idea, all you need is to take the leap and go for it. either if your scared or not, indeed you have control of your whole life by doing it better. I started as self-employed at 2017 and the funny thing is that after 2 years I have my own LTD company and doing whatever I want! for all those out there I ll gonna say this, if you have faith on what you do and if you have a hobby that you give your perfect performance on it, just go for it and make it happen. you won't believe how much freedom you will feel by working for your own business. you can work whenever you want, take holidays all day and get paid for it, you can make your life much much better. Great video, by the way, keep it like this cause as I see lots of subscribers are following you and i hope & believe that they listen on what you have to say. good influence. Thank you.

Hi again Eric, thank you for your advice, I managed to get a job after lot of failing interviews, and I hope someday I would live to be self-employed rather than living paycheck to paycheck, but yeah it's better than nothing and it's a good chance to gain some experience too.

I’m at the point where I’m done with bullshit jobs. Ready to be on my own. Worked part time as a usher for a movie theater business for 4 years. Worked as a stage actress for a theater company for now 5 years. Out by the time I’m almost 30 and get a reputable agent and be self-employed. Yes.
@gaddob3363
@gaddob3363 4 года назад
Of course you can get 'fired' if you're self-employed. All that need happen is that you lose a client that you depend on so much, who represents such a large percentage of your revenue that your business becomes no longer viable overnight. I've seen it happen a number of times, typically during recessions, or when the business owners end up becoming comfortable with a single profitable 'cash cow' and don't put in the effort they should to bring in new business. It's all about risk management. But overall, you're right in so far that ironically being a full time employee affords one less job security than being self employed.
@OverpassApps
@OverpassApps 4 года назад
Yeah. But you always have the "job" even if no revenue. :-). I know it doesn't make sense, but if I hire people and tough times come... I'm going to do whatever I have to do to bring on a new client or more work (such as a contract) but any employees will go before I do. And, yeah, I'm terrified of having only one client. I've worked at places like that too. That client has full control and all the power.

I'm a ghostwriter. I spent much of this year trying to be self-employed by publishing my own content on KDP. Didn't work out. I planned on launching one book a week, ended up launching one book a month. I perform better when there's someone who's already paid me to do something and there's a deadline, and real consequences of I miss it. I'm not a good leader I guess. Someday...

Is there an online community for self-employed people to communicate and support each other? I have been self-employed for nearly a year - really enjoying it and making more money than when I was in employment! It's not for everybody though..,

Same here, I have been self employed for like 2 years now. And a couple of days ago my freelancing accounts got banned without any reason. And they still refuse to give elaborate reason and asking for verification. I have uploaded my documents and its been 2 days and they have not responded yet. And my ongoing big projects are stopped. That was always been scariest thing for me and now i am facing my scariest fear. But there is hope that soon everything will be smooth again

I myself is a self-employed as well as running my own company. And yeah its better to be self-employed rather than working for someone. But I don't understand when should I switch to work full time for my company rather than for someone else. I have been doing this for the past 10 months straight and have earned way more from my company then my personal job. The scariest thing is the slow months which won't let me quit my job. please do talk about this in your next video and how had you switch this situation when you were facing this.

Hi Eric, what are first steps to become self-employed/freelancer?
@OverpassApps
@OverpassApps 4 года назад
I’d say the biggest step is to do it while you are already in a job. This is not easy because you don’t have much time and you need to find a flexible client who can hear from you at night and weekends. But it’s much less stressful as you get use to it and grow your skills.

I've been wanting to go self-employed forever, but really thought about it in the last year. Now... I got made redundant last week! All of a sudden my upcoming payments will be zero... so this video is relatable! Time to do it. Even if it's slow initially, I will no longer face the risk of instantly having nothing, like has just happened.

I think it all depends on your personality. Some people are better with structure in place aka a job. Some people like the freedom that comes with building your own structure. The best part about this generation is even if you don't have steady income through your business. Doordash, Uber, and and other forms freelancing will ALWAY be around. I use door dash to supplement my income. I am way more motivated and productive self employed than I was employed.

My location was a tech bubble in the opposite way. I thought I had built up a great wage and was scared to leave it on a chance of nothing. Eventually doing it was amazing. I basically work full time now but just chipping away at my stuff on my own tempo. It's great to have the time management. It's so exciting to get a project because you get the money. Working for others means "security" of regular payments but working harder or taking on something new just has some vague chance of a raise in the next year, it's not anywhere as near as satisfying. Although its not all rainbows, overrun comes out of your pocket then, so you have to be smarter and you have to do all the jobs like sales, accounts, quotes, time management, etc. I would recommend, for people starting out, to go employed for a bit to learn the professional ropes. Throw yourself into everything you suck at, get involved with as much networking stuff as you can, then leave for self employed when you can handle everything and you're a bit bored.
@OverpassApps

You are right. You gave everything yet a bad boss just sitting all day to wait for any coaching opportunities he could see in every low level employees. I hope one day he will be the only guy left in the company so he could do all the task and we'll see how good he is in running the business.

I had a similar problem , If your key word "audio headlines" have low competition it will pop up after a few weeks if similar apps have the same name or almost you will remain low that is why is better to chose unique names for your apps

is there a risk for someone who is self employed like a musical instrument maker, because frankly there is no need for industrial experience eg working for 5-10 years elsewhere. but if the career goes downhill then one day he may eventually have to apply for a job and no one will take him in even though he has been actively self-employed because all that experience counts for nothing to the industrial-eyed. that is the only concern for me...

What scares me is if I am going to make enough money for my wife and kids to support them. I am waiting on my tax return and then going to start my own business. Should I leave my job and go self employed or stay at my job and do my business on the side until it is prospers. I work 4p till 1230pm
@OverpassApps

DEFINITELY do on the side until you know if it will work. Your wife and kids need that certainty as much as you do. Otherwise, you could be trying to do it all alone because everyone is afraid of the uncertainty.

I was in your same boat I had a 9 to 5 at a print shop and my sports videography business as a side hustle. I would work my 9 to 5 come home spend an hour with the kids and spend three or four hours learning and building my business. Eventually I build up my videography Business to the point it made the same amount of money as my 9 to 5.
