From one British lad to another, as long as you're enjoying what you do, that's all that matters. If you want to discuss stuff, do it in whatever manner and medium that interests you. RU-vid is just another vessel for language, just like Bitwig is a vessel for music. you can be as direct or creative as you like. Real you is fine, scripted you is fine, AI generated you is questionable. Peace.

Alex, YOU have worth. Just you. As someone who struggles with impostor syndrome every day, I know where you're coming from but you have to recognise that you are the best-qualified person to be you and trying to emulate someone else or be something you're not just puts you at a disadvantage and makes life harder. Also, creating a swirling event horizon where all the fucks you used to give were, is a helpful start.

Started my RU-vid channel in the past few months and this has been the main issue that I've been feeling. The amount of RU-vid I've consumed for nearly two decades now has leaked into my subconscious assumption of what a person making a youtube video can be like (especially in these longer form talking videos). The camera does not feel like a friend in the room that I can converse with, it feels like a cold, judgmental audience that I must entertain with my perfectly written and performed words, beautiful shots, and an engaging storyline. I think intentionally breaking from the 'expected' structure, and doing things that are "unoptimized" is the way forward my friend. keep doing what you can to be you

Wow what an interesting insight and oppurtunity to reflect on my own music edu creator journey. For the record, I have never seen your delivery method in a negative light. I also strive to present knowledge in a way that I deem as unlikely to waste anyone's precious time. So I also use a script. But if I'm honest, its also motivated by perfectionism and insecurity. I have had a few of my patrons comment on how they like my delevery... which is somewhere in the middle between educators which deliver info through overly-lengthy, unorganised, careless, and "raw" screen capturing, with all the "ums" & "ahh"s and what not, and the trend of fast-paced #shorts which have to be contantly paused to obsorb any info from them. I do a lot of editing, just to shatve of 3-5 miinutes of total video length. Iin a nutshell, the middle-way seems to be the goal for me. Not too rigid, not too loose. I have always enjoyed your style, I wouldnt have continued to come back to your channel if I thought you were wasting my time. I appreciate the extra length you go to. And your close friends are just one aspect of the demographic. So when they say " it would be nice to see you just be more yourself", take it with a grain of salt. The Tache that they know, and the the guy that presents professional, guru-level edu content do not have to be the same person. The middle-way brother. Let's aim for that.

You just need to say the f-word more often. Seriously though, I can see appreciate the effort you put into your videos. As a teacher myself, I struggle with filming myself for youtube videos. I don't know how to "just be myself". I'll literally film a talk 15 times and then give up. Even though I know that people don't care about this kind of detail; they choose to learn from me because they like me or because I'm teaching something unique. You usually have both these things going for you as well. I think one thing that would make you more human and personable would be to simply talk about what you've learned, including the mistakes you've made. Like this video! Also, we can tell if you're having fun, and that makes a video more likable. So keep doing it for the fun of it and not out of obligation.

Well, if you were a mainstream brand and represented cruel, exploitative humor, totally amoral or predatory lifestyles, or totally bankrupt philosophies and whatnot, you would probably be less susceptible to this fear and you would be defended by that element. Being sensitive and empathic, creative, positive, self reflective, and NOT those things (as far as I know), opens you up to feelings like this more often, especially on *this* horrible platform.

Creative process can tend to be a distillation of things we try to embody, especially when you give yourself a didactic role, it makes sense and that's normal. Don't people criticize Alan Watts for being an alcoholic? It's not like that makes those messages any less valuable. You're one of the people that got me into Bitwig, yes, but I also appreciate your insight into creative process as a whole. You're not a fraud, and I would be happy to see more personable work from you.

existence is brutal! as you touched on, the solution isn't to be found in perfectionism. This only leads to insecurity. I find there's nothing more helpful to reset my own guru habits is to do a meditation retreat. I really appreciate this vid, and I agree that just being vulnerable, as hard as it is, is a great thing to be. "just be yourself" is often very unhelpful to hear from friends, because we have such myriad selves within us. But we do know when we're not existing in a real way, and it's freeing to admit of our lacks and hardships because we all have them, every last one of us. I'm from LA, and I know very well that it can be a place where appearing 'successful' and dressing the part and all that tend to be more highly regarded than just being a real human. But I also know, just from existing on this planet for over 40 years, that honestly is indeed the best policy, and that faking it til you make it doesn't work, because there isn't really an "it", is there? The more we can all be real and vulnerable in this weird, beautiful, crumbling world, the more we can find contentment and joy - despite the realities of how difficult life can be.

@CybreSmee
@CybreSmee 10 месяцев назад
@ Zarathustra was a guru who told his disciples to lose him as they were yet to find themselves. The story basically means Zarathustra is the mask of social preservation, or the herd mentality. So those who follow the herd should stop and find their own self as to then return and teach the guru to live without the mask. Or something to that effect. Nietzsche is open to many interpretations, you should look into it.

I rarely comment on type of content like this but it's okay. there's no real you completely. it's all fragments of you. sometimes external things can extract the "you" you never thought. you can be whatever you want to be. youtube and camera are a reflection of you too. don't force trying to being yourself on youtube. don't force trying not to being yourself too. say whatever u want. do whatever u want. fake or no fake. it's all you. if people don't like it, they will leave. I vibe with ur stories or tutorials and here I'm. Look at Sam Sulek contents. He doen't even have thumbnails or no editing. Just raw ass put ur camera down there and talk and it even breaks the algorithm where nobody expects because people need the social aspect from youtube. keep going with contents or music here. it's like a community already and I'm happy to be a part of something bigger than life.

Honestly, I love your sorta wry / dry 'wise teacher' character that you intro/outro your stuff with cause you always end up switching over into your true 'self' self when teaching. I think this is funny and something I genuinely love about you and your channel. The thing is, in all human communication, we 'tune' ourselves a bit to fit the audience. Call it presentation. You shape yourself up a little if you are having company over or meeting up with friends. There are a few (two, maybe that's it) people who I trust enough to be completely myself around without any attempts at this 'presentation.' They are not on the Internet. Plus, video as a medium is about telling a story - often this requires a plan or vision, 'characters', perhaps a few takes and attempts, and some editing, etc. So as far as being 'yourself' for a thankless online youtube audience - sure, people prefer genuine honesty, but it's more like, just don't be someone else. Frankly, unless you are going WAY out of your way to really NOT be yourself or do and be something you hate, then I am not sure what the problem is. Do what you love. Coincidentally, my favorite moment on this whole channel is from around 7 min into The Automation Trick You Wish You'd Known Sooner - when you stumble on some sound and are like: OOOH I accidentally just did that!! It's clearly genuine and hilarious.

Something reminded me of this discussion today. I think it's worth saying that if/when you feel like: "Is this who I am? ...just some youtuber who teaches niche Bitwig h4xx?" It isn't just that. You are teaching something that helps people create. Teaching anything without being a complete bore, or making things stupid complicated, is freaking hard (production specifically, is massive and arcane. It's like the particle physics of music...), and you have made it helpful, fun, and entertaining. But if 'mere Bitwig tutorials and tips' (obviously, you are not merely doing that) inspire and unlock creativity in others, this will have a massive creative ripple effect, as learners go on to discover and invent amazing new sounds and music, help other artists create etc. Any creative pursuit is difficult and can often be discouraging. Learning, being encouraged by others, sharing the journey, not feeling lost and alone...is really important. I know your stuff has encouraged me out of those crap mentalities like, "What am I even doing? This is all just a stupid pipe dream. Why waste your time?" So yeah, I wouldn't minimize what you are doing at all. :D

I love all your videos. You show your truths no matter how polished and scripted things are. The scripting it's self is created by you, so your voice is very much there. And meticulously planning details for a video is just general quality control. However, seeing how I didn't get to the end yet and just ran for the comment box like any other dummy RU-vid user, I completely respect and support your need if you want to be more free flow. I can't do anything unscripted as I stutter from ADHD and anxiety when forced to say things on the spot (but believe me, I don't have an issue when I'm not thinking about it) to put it another way: you only did this in 30 takes? I remember when some time ago you share a deeply sad moment in your life and i thought that a person that can be so honest, so sincere, so internally naked and exposed with a bunch of strangers on YT has to be a great person and a great human being. No one is perfect. We can just do what we can to pass through life as better as we can and in the meantime trying not to fuck up staff and do something good for the other. F-bomb storm??? How dare you!! Unsubbed!!!! Only joking! You might feel that your real personality has taken second stage to a contrived persona but actually your honesty and integrity has always shone so brightly, along with all your audio insight. As you can see in the comments, WE FUCKING LOVE YOU; don't go changin'! ❤🎵❤🎹❤

We're all bumbling through stuff, bro. Doesn't matter who you are, where you are, where you're going, or where you've been. You're doing a bloody brilliant job of bumbling in your own wonderful way!

I like your videos. And also being a human, it is scary being yourself and accepting it. On a side note: That's some view in the background.

of course, there's a lot of nuggets here that are begging to be sampled! ;-) Seriously, though, your humility here has elevated you in my eyes. You're an all-round honest and relatable chap now.

your experience is uniquely identifiable for me, though admittedly the effect is more widespread throughout my life in place of it being with content creation. that constant need to be justified or worthy of speaking on something or talking to someone or even commiting to a goal, may likely be why i've never made a youtube channel actually. The amount of time I spend editing and re-writing texts or comments or dm's borders parody. To clarify I'm young and just watching my own behaviors and reactions to figure out where to go from here, and analogous situations like this are pretty helpful. Your video that blew up found me as well and I had the same sentiment there, although I am starkly familiar with that false epiphany effect where you find something insightful and end up not digesting or implementing it gonna cut myself off here
