Cultural and social critic, Dr. bel hooks addresses issues of developing good self esteem among blacks and people of color amidst dominant commercial and cultural biases and media narratives . Dr. hooks appeared on Global Village Talk a variety and public affairs public access cable TV show produced by D-Day Media Group, hosted by Dennis Day. The show airs on MNN, Manhattan Neighborhood Network channel 34, and 57, on New York's Time Warner cable network. ( The Video, at 6 minutes is an excerpt from a 60 minute show entitled Good Hair vs, Bad Hair, first broadcast in 2003. Special in studio guests, Marcia Fingle, and Liv Wright.

@ZenMamaPolitic I used this video as a reference for my comment today on a very good article entitled: 'As Beyoncè’s Crowned Most Beautiful, What Defines Beauty For You?' written by Danielle Pointdujour, for 'Frugivore' magazine. Love bell, but let's also remember that some POC have naturally straight hair, e.g. Somalian and Eritrean women.

it would seem ur missing some nuance in this comment, its not that theres only one type of hair for black people, but rather there is a historical devaluation of particularly common types of hair for black people, in relation to hair characteristics which are typically associated with whiteness. the black people who have straighter hair also experience a different type of privilege because of this

That wasn’t Quite the point here. The focus was on the aesthetic of dark skin and non-straight hair textures deemed as unattractive, undesirable and lower class.
