I'm from Belarus. Please google something about 2020 elections and protests here, the more you see, the more you'll understand our situation. When all this happened I came to realization how the 2nd amendment in the US is important. @Nehemiah Scudder I mean you seem so open-minded that I could give you all the evidence you need, you'd probably just dismiss it as fake, but god forbid we're doubting about the Ukrainian declarations, which turn out to be lies one after one ( the last one is that Russian warship that they claim to have sunk ). But if you really want evidence, watch Anne-Laure Bonnel's documentary "Donbass". It will show you, but even then I'm not sure you'd still want to believe it, western propaganda and conditioning is far more powerful than Russian one after all. This was not respected, hence why Russia is fearing for the integrity of its borders on the long run, especially with how close the last successive Ukrainian governments got with NATO and the EU. Crimea was special in that it possesses the port of Sevatsopol, of utmost strategical importance. Also Crimea has always been part of Russia, it was only transferred from one SSR to another during the Soviet Union. With the fall of USSR and Ukraine's independency, Crimea stayed in Ukraine's control with an agreement that Russia could still use the port for its Black Sea fleet. However seeing how Ukraine was leaning more and more towards the West these past decades, Russia might have thought that Sevastopol could be a tough thing to gain back if relations between Ukraine and Russia would have keep on deteriorating, hence why they took it back when they had the occasion, probably. Crimea is not just a simple annexation, it's far more complex than that. Now you can think that Putin is just a new Hitler who'll go after Baltic states, then Poland, then all of Europe after he's done with Ukraine, but that's just your opinion, nothing supports that. And right now, the West have given him all the casus belli he needed to make the move he has done. This probably wasn't a good move, anyone can agree that the invasion must be condemned, but again this is a complex situation that stretches over decades of geopolitics and where the West has a lot of responsibilities too. And Ukraine really didn't make itself a favor with all its nazi humping and crimes against humanity in the Donbass. Even if it's most likely just a pretext for Putin, well it's still a valid pretext. And there's still all the stuff about trade, wheat, gas and so on. For Russia, Ukraine is not just "a" country, it's central for its interests in Europe. If it was just a simple invasion to reunite the Soviet Union or whatever, then why would Putin only strike now ? He had way better occasions already, when the economy and military of his country were better, and especially when Ukrainian's ones were weaker. Hell he could have just go all the way in 2014, Ukrainian army was pretty much inexistant back then. That's why I don't buy the Europe invasion thing. I think Putin just wants Ukraine to stay neutral at worst, so that the interests of Russia in Europe aren't harmed.
