One of the most successful clubs in Ireland, Belfast Celtic withdrew from football in 1949 after its players were attacked by opposition fans rioting after a game against Linfield at their home, Windsor Park. Several players required hospital treatment and one, Jimmy Jones, had his leg broken in the melee.
